Ruby is suspended because Mortimer uses an old photograph to make her private conversation with Graham Sutton look like evidence of an affair. Sutton is actually involved with Lydia, and when he confesses to that relationship, he does not realize the school has mistaken Ruby for Lydia. The finale ends with Ruby and James together, but Ruby’s suspension threatens her place at Maxton Hall and her Oxford plans.
How does Maxton Hall Season 2 end?
Mortimer turns a photograph of Ruby talking privately with Sutton into apparent evidence that they were romantically involved. At the disciplinary meeting, Sutton believes the school has uncovered his relationship with Lydia. He admits to that relationship, but the accusation has already been redirected toward Ruby.
The consequences fall on both of them: Sutton is arrested, while Ruby is suspended. The school’s version of events is false, but Lydia does not publicly correct it before Sutton is taken away. Ruby is left facing the possible loss of her place at Maxton Hall and the Oxford future she has been working toward.
Why does Sutton accept the accusation?
Sutton sees the photograph and assumes the school has discovered his relationship with Lydia. He confesses to that relationship without understanding that Mortimer has made Ruby appear to be the person involved with him. The misunderstanding persists through the meeting, and by the time Sutton recognizes what the committee believes, Ruby has been implicated and the situation has escalated toward his arrest.

Are Ruby and James still together?
Yes. Ruby and James had reconciled earlier and decided to stop hiding their relationship. In the final scene, Ruby runs out of the meeting and into James’s arms. They cry together, but the embrace is not a breakup or a resolution to the school’s accusation. It shows them facing the crisis as a couple.
The moment also reverses the emotional support they have given each other before: Ruby stood by James after his mother died, and now James stands by Ruby. Actor Damian Hardung described the image as them being together and “fighting against the outside world.” That is his reading of the closing moment, not confirmation of what happens next.

Does Lydia tell the school the truth about Sutton?
Not before the finale ends. Lydia and Sutton’s relationship is confirmed, and Sutton is the father of Lydia’s expected twins. But Lydia does not publicly correct Mortimer’s false account before Sutton is taken away. Whether she will disclose the truth and help clear Ruby remains unresolved.
Is Percy James and Lydia’s biological father?
The finale raises the possibility but does not confirm it. In the closing shots, Percy is at Cordelia’s grave with a key, and the visual connection between his upward gaze and James’s invites questions about the Beaufort family secret. TIME has raised the possibility that Percy is James and Lydia’s biological father, but that remains speculation rather than an established answer in the finale.

What the ending means for Ruby and James
The final embrace is an emotional commitment, not a neat romantic ending. Ruby’s immediate position at school and her Oxford ambition are in jeopardy, while the accusation against her remains uncorrected. James is beside her as they confront those consequences. The couple’s unity is clear; how they will overcome the external pressure is left open.
How the series relates to Mona Kasten’s books
Season 2 continues the adaptation of Mona Kasten’s Save You. The book sequence is Save Me, Save You, and Save Us, with the first associated with Season 1 and the second with Season 2. The novels provide a possible next step for viewers who want to continue the story, but the television adaptation should not be assumed to reproduce every book event exactly.

Why Season 2 ends on a cliffhanger
Director Martin Schreier explained that Season 1 stopped before the first book’s betrayal of Ruby, leaving a quasi-happy endpoint in case the story did not continue. For Season 2, the team knew the story could go on and wanted a finale that would provoke a strong emotional response and leave viewers wondering what comes next. The result is a conclusion to the immediate meeting, but not to Mortimer’s scheme, Ruby’s school crisis, or the family questions surrounding Percy.
