It lets an eligible direct-billed subscriber pay $7.99 per month for one person outside the household to use Max with separate login credentials. The extra member gets one adult profile and can stream on one device at a time.
That is a paid-sharing option, not proof of a universal password-sharing ban. Max’s announcement does not document a new household-verification system, automatic suspensions, or a deadline for unauthorized sharers.
What Max’s Extra Member feature does
The Extra Member Add-On is managed by the primary account holder. After purchasing it through Max subscription settings, the owner invites one person who lives elsewhere. That person receives separate credentials and a standalone account connected to the owner’s plan.
- Only one Extra Member is allowed per Max account.
- The extra member receives the benefits of the primary account’s base plan, subject to the add-on’s limits.
- The extra member has one adult profile.
- Streaming is limited to one device at a time.
- The primary subscriber remains responsible for the subscription and add-on payment.
Price compared with a separate Max subscription
Warner Bros. Discovery announced a U.S. price of $7.99 per month, the same across eligible Max tiers. Taxes, promotions, annual-plan treatment and provider-specific billing can differ, so check the live checkout screen before subscribing.

Prices and plan details are listed in Max’s U.S. help center. The $7.99 add-on is cheaper than a separate Basic with Ads plan, but it is not a full independent tier: its one-profile and one-device limits still apply even when the primary subscriber has Premium.
What the extra member gets
Separate credentials
The invited person uses their own login rather than the primary subscriber’s password. Their account remains linked to the owner’s subscription, so this is separate access, not an independently billed Max membership.

Profile Transfer
During account creation, the owner can transfer one adult profile to the new extra-member account. Max says the transfer can include that profile’s watch history, recommendations and settings. The announcement does not promise transfer of Kids profiles, payment details or every personalized item.
One profile and one stream
Max’s general profile documentation allows a normal household account to have up to five profiles, but extra-member accounts are limited to one profile. The extra member can stream on one device at a time, regardless of the primary plan’s higher simultaneous-stream allowance.

Who can use the add-on?
Max announced the feature for eligible U.S. subscribers who pay Max directly and excludes bundle subscribers. Its help page refers to WarnerMedia-billed subscribers. Max sells subscriptions through providers including Apple, Google Play, Roku, Samsung, Amazon, Xfinity, Cox and Xumo, but the available documentation does not establish that every provider supports Extra Member purchasing.
The Disney+, Hulu, Max Bundle specifically does not support the Extra Member Add-On. If the option is missing, check who bills the subscription and whether the account is a bundle. Subscription changes may also require the subscriber to be in the country where the subscription began; that is not evidence of a separate household-location check for extra members.

How to add an Extra Member
- Open Max subscription settings.
- Purchase the Extra Member Add-On if it is offered for the account.
- Invite the person who lives outside the household.
- Manage the extra member from subscription settings on the web or mobile app.
- Choose whether to transfer one adult profile during account creation.
On a phone, tablet or computer, Max’s general path is Profile → Subscription. On a TV device it is Settings → Subscription. Button names can change, so confirm the current labels in the live U.S. account before following a screenshot-based guide.

“Cracking down” is a reasonable description of Max trying to monetize out-of-household sharing, but it is not a verified description of a specific enforcement algorithm. The official announcement confirms a paid method that gives an outside user separate credentials and gives the account owner more control.

The available official sources do not establish that:
- all password sharing is blocked;
- every account is checked for household location;
- unauthorized sharers receive a specific warning or deadline;
- accounts are automatically suspended for sharing; or
- the add-on is available worldwide or through every billing provider.
Which option should you choose?

The add-on is most compelling when one outside viewer watches alone, wants to keep their viewing history and accepts that the primary subscriber controls the relationship. A separate subscription is worth the higher price when independence, multiple users or broader streaming capacity matters more than the $7.99 savings.
