There is no standard free trial for every new U.S. HBO Max subscriber. You can watch House of the Dragon during a trial only if an eligible plan or provider displays a trial offer during sign-up. HBO Max’s current guidance says most subscription providers do not offer one. This information was checked August 18, 2026; the service’s current branding is HBO Max, though many people still call it Max.
Is there a Max free trial for House of the Dragon?
Not as a universal offer. HBO Max says most providers do not offer a free trial to new subscribers. A trial may appear with a specific plan or temporary promotion, but its availability, eligibility rules and duration depend on the offer shown at checkout. If the trial is for a plan that includes the series, it can include House of the Dragon; the trial itself need not be branded for that show. HBO Max’s official page lists the series, confirms Seasons 1 and 2, and says Season 3 premiered June 21, 2026. How to check for a real trial
- Start at the official HBO Max plans page, or use the sign-up flow for a provider you already subscribe to.
- Choose the plan or bundle you want and sign in or create an account.
- Before submitting payment, review the final checkout screen. Look for the words “free trial,” the trial length, eligibility restrictions, the first paid billing date and the regular renewal price.
- Proceed only if the offer and terms are clear. HBO Max requires a payment method for trial enrollment, and a plan can charge you immediately if you are ineligible or the offer is not actually a trial. HBO Max sign-up instructions
- Once access is active, search for House of the Dragon in the app to confirm the title is available on your plan and in your region.
A discount, bundle or provider benefit may lower the price without being a free trial. Treat “free” claims on third-party sites as unconfirmed unless HBO Max or the company that bills you displays the offer.
How to avoid a charge when a trial ends
Trials normally renew automatically into a paid subscription unless canceled before the displayed billing date. Note the end date as soon as you enroll; where possible, cancel at least 24 hours before renewal, and save the confirmation email or a screenshot. Check the account afterward to verify the cancellation and access end date. Deleting the app does not cancel the subscription.
Cancel through whoever bills you. If HBO Max charges you directly, use the subscription controls in your HBO Max account. If you enrolled through Amazon, Apple, Google Play, Roku, Samsung, a mobile or TV provider, or another partner, cancellation is generally handled through that provider. Cheapest legal ways to watch if there is no trial
- One month of Basic with Ads: $10.99 before tax. It is the lowest-cost direct monthly plan and may be the simplest option if you want to watch the series and cancel afterward. Ads run before and during shows, at about six minutes per hour. HBO Max ad details
- Student plan: Eligible students at U.S.-accredited colleges or universities can get Basic with Ads for $5.49 per month after verification through UNiDAYS, for up to 12 months subject to terms. It is discounted, not free. Plan and student pricing
- Benefits you already receive: Check an existing HBO television subscription or eligible access through providers such as Prime Video Channels, Hulu, Philo Core, Verizon, Xfinity or YouTube TV. Inclusion and activation requirements vary; you may need to link the provider account inside HBO Max. Don’t assume that having Prime, a mobile plan or a TV package automatically includes access. - Disney+, Hulu and HBO Max bundle: The bundle is $19.99 per month with ads or $32.99 per month without ads, under the listed plan terms. It may suit a household that already wants all three services, but it costs more than one month of standalone Basic with Ads if you only want House of the Dragon. Bundle details

- Philo or Verizon: HBO Max says Basic with Ads is included with Philo Core, and eligible Verizon myPlan Unlimited customers can sign up for the Netflix & HBO Max perk. Annual direct plans cost $109.99 for Basic with Ads, $184.99 for Standard and $229.99 for Premium. They can make sense if you expect to use HBO Max for much of the year, but a monthly plan is more flexible for a single-series watch. HBO Max says annual plans save about 16% compared with paying monthly for a year. Basic with Ads is enough for access to the series; Standard and Premium cost more for plan features rather than extra access to the show. Standard and Premium remove regular ads in shows and movies, though live programming may still include ads. House of the Dragon supports 4K UHD, HDR 10 or Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos on select devices with the applicable Premium plan; the experience also depends on compatible equipment. No official source listed here confirms that the complete series is freely available without a subscription or qualifying provider benefit. Free collections may offer selected samples, but that does not mean the full show is included. Avoid unauthorized streaming sites: they can expose you to deceptive payment forms, intrusive ads, malware, credential theft and copyright issues. If checkout does not offer a legitimate trial, the lowest-cost direct option listed is one month of Basic with Ads at $10.99 before tax.

If something goes wrong
- You expected a trial but were charged: The offer may not have applied to your plan, you may not have met its eligibility rules, or checkout may have shown a paid promotion rather than a trial. Check the receipt and contact the company that processed the payment.
- You canceled but were charged anyway: Check whether you canceled before the renewal date and whether you canceled with the actual billing provider rather than just deleting the app or removing HBO Max from a device. Keep your cancellation confirmation.
- The series is missing: Confirm you are in the right account and profile, complete any provider activation or linking, check regional availability, and update the app. A preview or trailer is not the full series.
