Max was Warner Bros. Discovery’s name for its streaming service from 2023 until the company began restoring the HBO Max brand in 2025. In 2026, “Max” and “HBO Max” may still appear interchangeably in search results, apps, account pages, and billing records, but they generally refer to the same broader streaming platform—not two separate subscriptions. Availability and branding can roll out at different times by country and provider.
The service combines HBO programming with Warner Bros. films, Max Originals, DC, Harry Potter, Cartoon Network, family titles, documentaries, reality shows, and Discovery-style food, home, lifestyle, and true-crime programming.

What is Max?
Max is Warner Bros. Discovery’s direct-to-consumer streaming platform. It launched in the United States on May 23, 2023, as the successor to HBO Max and as a broader alternative to a service focused only on HBO. Warner Bros. Discovery described it as bringing together the HBO Max and discovery+ content propositions.

Its programming mix includes:
- HBO: scripted series, limited series, comedy, documentaries, and library titles.
- Warner Bros.: selected theatrical films after their distribution windows, library movies, and major studio franchises.
- Max Originals: original scripted and unscripted series, including local productions in some markets.
- DC and Wizarding World: selected DC films and series, Harry Potter films, and related programming where rights permit.
- Discovery brands: reality, food, home renovation, lifestyle, factual entertainment, documentaries, and true crime.
- Family and animation: Cartoon Network, Adult Swim, Looney Tunes, kids’ programming, and selected Sesame Workshop content.

Is Max still called Max?
Not consistently. Warner Bros. Discovery announced on May 14, 2025, that Max would become HBO Max again during summer 2025. The company presented this as a restoration of the HBO name, not the launch of an entirely new service.
The practical timeline is:
- Before May 2023: HBO Max was the streaming brand.
- May 23, 2023: the U.S. service launched as Max.
- May 14, 2025: Warner Bros. Discovery announced the return of the HBO Max name.
- 2026: both “Max” and “HBO Max” remain common references, especially across older articles, search results, third-party billing, and regional app listings.
Warner Bros. Discovery’s rebrand announcement said the service would retain its app experience, programming, plans, and pricing. The official help material likewise describes the change as a transition rather than a separate new subscription. Rollout timing can still differ by country, device, and billing provider.
What can you watch on Max or HBO Max?
The catalog is best understood by content identity rather than by a permanent title list. Streaming rights change by country and release window, and a company owning a brand does not mean every associated title is always available.
HBO programming
HBO remains the service’s defining brand. Depending on the market and current rights, this can include acclaimed scripted series, limited series, comedy, documentaries, and older HBO library programs.
Warner Bros. films
Max carries selected Warner Bros. movies after theatrical and other distribution windows, along with parts of the studio’s film library. It is not a guarantee that every Warner Bros. film is available at the same time.
Max Originals
The platform also carries original scripted and unscripted productions. Some markets receive local originals or region-specific programming.
DC and Harry Potter
DC films and series, along with Harry Potter and other Wizarding World titles, may be available where Warner Bros. Discovery holds the relevant streaming rights. The selection and duration of availability vary.
Discovery-style factual entertainment
For documentary and unscripted viewers, this is one of Max’s major distinctions from a traditional HBO-only service. The lineup can include food, home renovation, lifestyle, reality, true crime, and factual programming associated with Discovery Channel, HGTV, Food Network, TLC, and ID.
Family and animation
Cartoon Network, Adult Swim, Looney Tunes, kids’ shows, and selected family programming broaden the service beyond adult prestige drama.
The key qualification is simple: Max does not permanently contain every HBO, Warner Bros., Discovery, DC, or Harry Potter title. Country, licensing agreements, release windows, plan rules, and live-event rights all affect what appears in the app.
U.S. plans and prices
The following standard U.S. prices were listed by the official help center and checked on August 18, 2026. Prices, taxes, promotions, provider plans, and availability can change, so confirm the live offer before subscribing.

All three plans provide the general Max catalog. The main differences are advertising, downloads, simultaneous streams, and enhanced picture and sound formats. The official U.S. plan comparison lists the current details.
- Basic with Ads is the low-cost entry point, but it does not list downloads as included.
- Standard removes ads from ordinary on-demand programming, includes 30 downloads, and supports two simultaneous streams.
- Premium raises the simultaneous-stream limit to four and adds up to 4K and Dolby Atmos where the title, device, connection, and other technical requirements support them.
“Up to 4K” does not mean every program is available in 4K. Similarly, Dolby Atmos is title- and equipment-dependent. Annual billing costs less than paying the displayed monthly price for 12 months at these listed rates, but cancellation and refund terms depend on the subscription route.
Which Max plan should you choose?
Choose Basic with Ads if you want the lowest price
Basic with Ads makes sense if you accept advertising, do not need offline viewing, watch in Full HD, and need no more than two simultaneous streams.

Choose Standard for the likely middle-ground option
Standard is a better fit if you want ordinary on-demand viewing without ads, need downloads for flights or commutes, and two streams are enough. It is also the least expensive plan listed with access to Max’s included select live-sports offering.
Choose Premium only for specific benefits
Premium is justified when a household needs four simultaneous streams, wants more downloads, or has compatible 4K/HDR and Dolby Atmos equipment and watches titles offered in those formats. It is poor value if you have a Full HD television, never download programs, and only need one or two streams.
Does Max include live sports?
Yes, but it should not be treated as a complete cable replacement or comprehensive sports package. The official U.S. plan page lists select live events—including MLB, NHL, NBA, NCAA Men’s March Madness, U.S. Soccer, and premier cycling—for Standard and Premium, not Basic with Ads.
Rights can vary by region and event. Blackouts, local restrictions, scheduling, and the difference between selected events and a full league package all matter. If you follow a particular team or competition, check the current event schedule and local rights before subscribing.
Max versus HBO
HBO is a programming brand; Max was the broader streaming product. HBO supplies premium series, films, comedy, and documentaries, while Max/HBO Max adds Warner Bros. movies, Max Originals, Discovery-style factual programming, animation, family content, and other Warner Bros. Discovery material.

Do not assume that “HBO” and “Max” describe identical products. The official help center has also described an HBO Only option at $16.99 per month with a smaller HBO-focused catalog, while the Max Standard plan at the same displayed monthly price includes substantially more content. Because product availability can be transitional or provider-specific, check the live offer in your country.
Max versus discovery+
discovery+ historically focused more heavily on factual, lifestyle, food, home, and reality programming. Max launched in 2023 with a broader entertainment proposition that combined HBO and Warner Bros. content with much of that Discovery-style programming.

That does not mean every discovery+ title moved to Max or that discovery+ disappeared everywhere. Whether discovery+ remains a separate service, and which catalog it offers, depends on the country and current business arrangements.
What happened to existing HBO Max subscribers?
When Max launched in 2023, Warner Bros. Discovery said existing HBO Max subscribers would receive access to Max at the same price initially, with profiles, settings, watch history, Continue Watching, and My List items migrating.
A current name change normally does not require opening a second subscription. Existing customers should first try the same account and check which company bills them. Customers billed by Apple, Google, Roku, Amazon, a cable company, or another provider may need to follow that provider’s sign-in or app-update instructions.
Do not subscribe again until you have checked your existing account and billing source. Duplicate subscriptions are a common result of treating a rebrand as a new service.

Direct signup is available through Max.com, while the official help center lists routes including the Apple App Store, Google Play, Roku, Samsung, Xfinity, Cox, Prime Video Channels, and other participating providers.
Direct billing is usually the clearest option for account control, plan changes, and cancellation. Third-party billing can be convenient if you manage subscriptions through Amazon, Apple, Roku, a television provider, or an internet bundle, but refunds, plan changes, and cancellation may need to go through that company.

Supported devices
Max/HBO Max is available across the major device categories, including:
- Web browsers.
- iPhone and iPad.
- Android phones and tablets.
- Roku.
- Apple TV.
- Amazon Fire TV.
- Android TV and Google TV.
- Samsung televisions.
- Xbox and other supported game consoles.
- Selected smart-TV platforms, including certain Hisense VIDAA devices.
Support changes as platforms and app versions change. The official device-specific signup guidance is more reliable than an old static compatibility list.
Downloads, streams, and household use
Downloads are for offline viewing inside the Max app, not permanent ownership or unrestricted video files. The current U.S. plan table lists no included downloads for Basic with Ads, 30 for Standard, and 100 for Premium. Individual titles, devices, expiration rules, and other limits can apply.

Any Extra Member Add-On described by the help center should not be assumed to apply to every customer or provider.
Is Max worth paying for?
Max/HBO Max is a strong fit for viewers who regularly watch HBO, Warner Bros. films, DC, Harry Potter, major franchises, documentaries, or a mixture of scripted and unscripted programming. It can also suit households that want selected live sports without purchasing a full live-TV bundle.
It is a weaker fit if you mainly want anime, a broad live-TV channel grid, local news, comprehensive sports coverage, or every Warner Bros. and Discovery title in one place. It may also be poor value if the programs you want are unavailable in your country or if you dislike ads but do not want to pay for Standard or Premium.
Compared with other services, Netflix is positioned more broadly around general entertainment; Disney+ is stronger for Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, and family content; Hulu has a stronger U.S. current-TV and general-entertainment identity; Prime Video combines included streaming with rentals, purchases, and add-ons; and discovery+ may be the better specialist choice for viewers focused mainly on factual and lifestyle programming where it is offered. Live-TV services are more appropriate for channel grids, local stations, news, and comprehensive sports.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Installing an outdated or unofficial app after searching for “HBO Max.”
- Assuming the name change requires a new account.
- Buying Premium solely for 4K when your device or preferred title does not support it.
- Assuming every Warner Bros., HBO, DC, Harry Potter, or Discovery title is always available.
- Interpreting “live sports” as every game in every league.
- Confusing the HBO programming brand with the broader streaming subscription.
- Forgetting whether Max, Apple, Google, Roku, Amazon, or a television provider handles billing.
- Expecting to change or cancel a provider-billed plan entirely inside the Max app.
- Treating a download as permanent ownership.
