In rural Goa, the Ganesh Chaturthi shrine can sit beneath a Matoli: a canopy or display of seasonal plant materials that brings fruits, leaves, flowers and other parts of the local landscape into the household celebration. One remarkable example documented by ICAR in Priol, Ponda, featured more than 385 plant materials—but that is one household display, not a statewide standard.
What is a Matoli?
A Matoli is a traditional plant-decorated canopy or display placed above the household Ganesh shrine during Chavath, Goa’s celebration of Ganesh Chaturthi. The Goa Tourism Development Corporation describes it as a “small pandal above the place where the idol is placed” and lists betel nut, coconut, bananas and mango branches among its necessary ingredients. A Government of Goa greeting in 2024 likewise described families decorating a Matoli with flowers, fruits and seasonal vegetables before bringing the murti to the altar.
The arrangement is both decoration and a way of bringing seasonal plant life into a domestic ritual setting. Its ingredients can reflect what is cultivated, gathered or locally familiar; the exact display varies, and no official source establishes a single statewide inventory or a typical number of materials per household.
What goes on a Goan Matoli?
Matoli materials can include seasonal fruits, vegetables, flowers, leaves, branches and forest produce, according to Incredible India, the Ministry of Tourism’s visitor guide. The specific items depend on the household and the season rather than following a documented fixed list.

A wide range of plant materials in Priol
On 17 September 2026, ICAR–Central Coastal Agricultural Research Institute reported on a Matoli at Gauthon, Priol, in Ponda taluka that featured more than 385 plant materials collected from Netravali Forest and Chorla Ghat. That count belongs to this particular display; it should not be read as a requirement, a typical household total or a figure for Goa as a whole.
ICAR grouped the materials as cultivated, traditional and underutilized crops; wild and semi-domesticated resources; medicinal and ornamental plants; and other ethnobotanically significant species. Its examples included banana, annona, ficus, passion fruit, pineapple and breadfruit among the fruits, and yams, gourds, beans and chilli among the vegetables and tubers. The display also used a broad range of plant parts, including fruits, seeds, leaves, stems, flowers, inflorescences, fibres and other vegetative parts. Luffa-derived fibres, for example, were used structurally or decoratively.

ICAR described the display as “a distinctive representation of Goan plant biodiversity, traditional plant-use practices and indigenous ecological knowledge, expressed through traditional eco-artistry and embedded within the cultural celebrations of Ganesh Chaturthi.” The Priol account shows how a single Matoli can make plant knowledge visible; it does not establish that every household uses the same species or gathers materials from the same places.
Nature and the sourcing question
Using plant materials connects the festival to seasonal abundance, but collection from the wild is not automatically without consequence. A Goa Legislative Assembly document notes growing demand and pressure on wild habitats for some plants used in Matoli decorations. It says the government would encourage cultivation in association with the Forest Department and Goa State Biodiversity Board. The document does not establish when that statement was published or whether the proposed cultivation effort is currently implemented, so it is not evidence of a completed program.

The practical distinction is between appreciating the tradition and assuming that every decorative plant should be collected from a forest. The legislative document supports concern about pressure on some habitats; it does not show that every collection is harmful or identify particular species as threatened. Cultivated or garden-grown seasonal materials can be part of the sourcing conversation, and a Goa government press note documents a Matoli Bazaar organized before the festival that accommodated self-help groups. It does not establish current availability of particular plants or sellers.

Official cultural activity offers another window into the custom. The Directorate of Art & Culture, Government of Goa, recorded nine households participating in its 2025 Matoli and Dekhava competition. That is a count for the competition, not an estimate of how many Goan households make Matolis. Together with ICAR’s documentation of the Priol display, it shows two distinct forms of recognition: recording plant diversity and celebrating household displays.

Visiting a Matoli respectfully
Incredible India advises visitors not to touch idols, offerings or decorations unless invited. That guidance applies to a Matoli as well: admire the arrangement without handling its plants or ritual items unless the hosts invite you to do so.
