“The Future Is Nigh,” the April 9, 2026 episode of CBS’s Matlock, raises several possible threats to Madeline “Matty” Matlock’s larger plan—but it does not confirm two new villains. The clearest sources of tension are Lester “The Wolf” Logan’s access to Senior and Julian’s willingness to influence his father. Which is the bigger danger depends on whether you weigh direct access against Julian’s uncertain loyalties.

The case’s questions about grief and influence echo Matty’s own loss of Ellie. Fangirlish’s review describes Matty turning to the program to see Ellie, and notes that the episode leaves the moral implications of grief-related AI unresolved rather than offering a simple judgment. Fangirlish’s April 10 review treats that emotional thread as part of the episode’s central tension.
Who could be a threat to Matty’s plan?
The episode and its reviews offer grounds to watch both the Wolf and Julian, but not enough to call either one a confirmed new villain—or to establish that these are the two characters meant by the headline’s premise. Tell-Tale TV’s April 10 review identifies the pair as sources of tension around Senior and the Wellbrexa effort. Its conclusions about their motives and reliability are critical interpretation, not settled plot fact. Tell-Tale TV’s review is useful for weighing the risks, not for treating speculation as canon.

Lester “The Wolf” Logan: access and influence
Tell-Tale TV notes that the Wolf has been named Senior’s power of attorney, a position that gives him a significant connection to Senior. The review presents this as a source of unease, particularly in light of Julian’s reaction. That access makes the Wolf a plausible risk to watch, but the available episode account does not establish that he intends to sabotage Matty’s plan.
Julian: a potential weak link
The same review says Julian tries to make Senior believe his health is worse than it is, and describes Julian as the Wellbrexa plan’s “weakest link” because he wants his father’s approval. That is the reviewer’s assessment of Julian’s behavior and priorities, not confirmation that he is working against Matty. His divided loyalties may make him dangerous to the plan even without proving him a villain.

Which one is the bigger threat?
If the concern is who has a formal route to influence Senior, the Wolf’s power-of-attorney role stands out. If the concern is who may undermine the Wellbrexa effort through unreliable choices, Julian is the more obvious candidate in Tell-Tale TV’s reading. The episode coverage does not establish either man’s ultimate motives, so there is no definitive ranking yet.
Joey’s call adds a different kind of danger
CBS’s synopsis flags Matty’s troubling call from Joey. Tell-Tale TV says Joey calls because he is thinking about using, then tells Matty that he knew about Alfie but chose not to get involved. The review frames Matty’s response through her guilt over Ellie and her family’s past. This brings emotional pressure into Matty’s life, but the available accounts do not identify Joey as one of the possible villains or connect him to a plot against her plan.

What the episode makes clear—and what remains open
- Established: The case concerns Vicki’s effort to gain control of an AI afterlife company she built with her late sister, and the story connects that case to Matty’s grief over Ellie.
- Established: The official synopsis calls Joey’s call troubling; Tell-Tale TV supplies the details about his thoughts of using and his admission about Alfie.
- Interpretation: Tell-Tale TV sees the Wolf’s power-of-attorney role and Julian’s behavior as tensions around Senior and the Wellbrexa effort, and calls Julian a weak link.
- Unconfirmed: The episode listing and reviews do not identify a definitive pair of “new possible villains,” nor do they settle which character is the bigger threat to Matty’s plan.
The episode also gives Senior a moment of vulnerability. Fangirlish reproduces his line to his son: “I’m getting old. Can’t outrun it. Not with money, with willpower. I’m scared, son.” The line helps explain why influence over Senior matters to the episode’s conflict; it does not by itself prove either man’s intentions. The same review quotes Olympia telling Sarah, “You are worth more than your mistake,” as their relationship-repair thread unfolds.
