Later production accounts add an important qualification: the film used extensive physical costumes, props and sets, but it is not an all-practical-effects production. ILM says the film required 2,180 visual-effects shots across six vendors.
What did the CinemaCon footage reportedly show?
Coverage of Amazon MGM’s 2025 CinemaCon presentation described concept art and set photographs featuring the Sorceress, Man-At-Arms, Skeletor and Evil-Lyn. DiscussingFilm characterized the designs as closely aligned with their 1980s counterparts. That is a report about material shown at the event, not an independently reviewed full footage reel or an official transcript: DiscussingFilm’s CinemaCon coverage.
The broader story is a balance between recognition and adaptation. The reported designs draw on familiar character imagery, while director Travis Knight has described updating some details for a modern cinematic film.
How accurate are the costumes to the classic designs?
Knight told ComicBook.com that the Filmation cartoon was a recurring reference when the design team reached a crossroads. He put the principle plainly: “Generally, I was always telling the guys like whenever we were at some kind of a crossroads, just go back to the source.” That points to the cartoon as a guiding reference, not a promise that every costume reproduces a specific frame or toy exactly.

- Good versus evil! Bring home the battle for the heart of Eternia with these four 5.5-inch hero and villain action figures based on the 2026 live action Masters of the Universe movie.
- Accurate movie look! These MOTU toys are based on the character appearances in the movie, including actor likenesses. With 14 movable joints, they're ready for action moves and battle poses.
- Heroes! The Most Powerful Man in the Universe, He-Man, and his Royal Guard Duncan, Man-At-Arms, are designed with likenesses of actors Nicholas Galitzine and Idris Elba.
- Villains! The Lord of Destruction, Skeletor, teams up with Goat Man, an exclusive figure, accurate to the character played by Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson.
- Key accessories included! Each figure includes a signature weapon accessory.
He-Man keeps the silhouette, not every detail
Knight’s He-Man example shows what that distinction means. The team retained the recognizable silhouette but moved away from the furry shorts and boots, ultimately choosing a gladiator-style skirt. As Knight put it, “So he’s got like a gladiator skirt instead of the furry knickers. It’s still got the same silhouette, but it’s just got a different prism attached to it.” ComicBook.com’s report on Knight’s comments describes the design discussion.
So “accurate” is best understood as faithful to recognizable shapes and character identity, with selected changes rather than exact replication. The CinemaCon descriptions support the classic-inspired framing; Knight’s comments explain how that fidelity could coexist with a redesigned detail.

What was built physically for the production?
In a set-visit report, CinemaBlend’s Corey Chichizola described seeing physical sets, costumes and props. The report includes the Castle Grayskull sanctum, a forest set with Teela’s ship, and a prison complex. Producer Jason Blumenthal said the production made its props and costumes from scratch in-house, and described a 40,000-square-foot facility used to manufacture them. These are details attributed to the producer and reporter, not a claim that every environment or object in the finished film was practical: CinemaBlend’s set-visit report.
The physical fabrication helps explain why the production can be described as having impressive practical work: substantial elements were made as tangible costumes, props and sets. It does not establish that every shot, creature or location was achieved in camera.

How much did digital visual effects contribute?
ILM’s 2026 production account says the film required 2,180 visual-effects shots handled across six vendors. ILM’s London and Mumbai studios completed 793 of those shots over 18 months. These figures describe the overall effects workload and ILM’s own contribution, respectively; they are not a count of practical shots or a complete breakdown of every vendor’s work. ILM’s production account.
Skeletor combines costume and digital work
ILM describes Skeletor as a hybrid character, with a digital head inside a costume. Visual-effects supervisor Pietro Ponti said, “It’s really just the head inside the hood that’s digital,” adding, “Everything else is the costume.” That account is a concrete example of practical and digital techniques working together, rather than competing explanations for how the character was made.

Digital environments were part of the approach
ILM also says its digital environments included a photogrammetry-based reconstruction of London’s Canary Wharf and surroundings, built from geographical data. Physical set construction therefore coexisted with digitally created locations and other visual effects. The available ILM account documents its work, not a full inventory of all physical and digital elements across the production.
What is the film about, and what release date was announced?
Mattel’s official synopsis says Prince Adam returns to Eternia after 15 years away to find it under Skeletor’s rule, then joins Teela and Duncan in an effort to save it. Amazon MGM’s slate announcement listed the film for theatrical release on June 5, 2026, with Travis Knight directing and Nicholas Galitzine, Camila Mendes and Idris Elba among the stars. That is the originally announced date, not confirmation of current release or availability.
