Meanwhile, a risky move to protect Matty’s secret identity threatens her separate Wellbrexa investigation.
What happens in “Crash Helmets On”?
“Crash Helmets On” is season 1, episode 10 of Matlock, which aired February 6, 2025. The episode’s case sends Matty and Sarah undercover as a grandmother and granddaughter at a senior living facility facing a wrongful-death lawsuit. CBS’s episode guide identifies the episode by that title and describes the undercover assignment.
Why is the senior-living case personal for Sarah?
Sarah was adopted and raised by white parents. Her adoptive grandmother had dementia, and as the illness progressed, she stopped recognizing Sarah as her granddaughter and referred to her as “that Chinese girl.” That history makes the grandmother-and-granddaughter cover painful rather than routine. Sarah tells Matty about it, explaining her reluctance to keep playing the role. TV Insider’s episode recap connects Sarah’s experience to her reaction to the assignment.
Why does Matty send Billy to court instead of Sarah?
After hearing Sarah’s personal connection to the case, Matty chooses Billy to represent the firm in court. Billy gets his first major win, but the decision lands as a betrayal to Sarah: she had trusted Matty with something deeply personal, and Matty then denies her the chance to handle a matter that mattered to her. The choice fractures the “You Three” bond among Matty, Sarah, and Billy, turning a professional decision into a rupture in the firm’s closest working relationship. TV Insider reports both the court decision and its personal cost.

How does the recording pen put Matty’s investigation at risk?
Matty is also secretly investigating Wellbrexa. When she worries that a recording pen used to gather information on Julian could be discovered and traced to her hidden family, she swaps it out to protect her cover. The move may keep suspicion away from her family, but it compromises progress on the investigation. It is another example of Matty’s divided loyalties: protecting the life she has built with Olympia and the firm can undercut the secret mission she is supposed to advance. TV Insider’s recap describes the device switch and its effect on the Wellbrexa thread.
Is Sarah Matty’s new enemy?
The episode leaves Sarah hurt, not transformed into a simple antagonist. Matty’s decision costs the team trust at a moment when her personal attachments are already complicating her judgment. The immediate danger is the damaged alliance: Sarah’s confidence in Matty is shaken, and Billy’s success does not erase how the choice was made.

Matty also still has to contend with Shae, whose scrutiny makes it difficult for her to protect her cover. Showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman told TV Insider that Shae “is the person that Matty just can’t get around easily.” The episode’s threat, then, is broader than one strained friendship: Matty’s secrets are harder to maintain as both her workplace relationships and her investigation come under pressure.
