Mast Mein Rehne Ka is a warm, character-led Hindi comedy-drama about loneliness, companionship and the precariousness of life in Mumbai. Jackie Shroff and Neena Gupta anchor its most affecting thread, while a younger pair’s troubles widen the film’s view of city life. Its episodic, gently wandering shape is part of its charm—and the main reason it may not work for viewers who want brisk plotting or nonstop comedy.
What is Mast Mein Rehne Ka about?
Vijay Maurya’s film follows two stories across generations. Kamath (Jackie Shroff), a lonely widower, and Mrs Handa, also known as Parkash Kaur Handa (Neena Gupta), are older neighbours whose lives intersect after a burglary. An out-of-work tailor is involved, and the incident draws the pair into an unlikely friendship. Alongside them, Nanhe (Abhishek Chauhan) and Rani (Monika Panwar) face the pressures and limited choices of making a life in Mumbai.
The film uses these parallel threads to explore aging, loneliness, poverty and urban precarity, as well as the possibility of second chances, forgiveness and resilience. The older characters’ connection gives the story its emotional centre; the younger characters show a different kind of vulnerability in the same city.
How well does the story come together?
The film is more interested in spending time with its characters than in building a tightly wound plot. NDTV critic Saibal Chatterjee describes its flow as “episodic,” a quality that helps the film move between its different lives but can also make the narrative feel loose. Scroll’s review headline called it “A cheerfully meandering comedy.”

That meandering quality is a matter of taste, not a promise of continuous lightness. Hindustan Times praises the storytelling and performances, while also pointing to stagey dialogue and familiar imagery. Moneycontrol finds the first half slow to get going and the move into a bleaker second half uneven, with some characters not developed enough. The film’s humane intentions and central performances give its stories warmth, but they do not eliminate every structural rough edge.
How are Jackie Shroff and Neena Gupta?
Shroff plays Kamath as a man whose loneliness is quieter than the bustle around him. Gupta’s Mrs Handa is more outwardly exuberant, creating a useful contrast rather than a simple mirror image. Their scenes bring the film’s themes closest to the surface: companionship can begin between people who seem very different, and a later chapter of life can still hold room for change.

Chauhan and Panwar carry the younger strand, which shifts the emphasis from older characters’ isolation to the pressures of precarious work and city survival. Reviews broadly value the cast’s performances and the film’s empathy, even where they disagree about how smoothly the two strands fit together.

Choose Mast Mein Rehne Ka if you enjoy character-first stories about companionship and urban loneliness, and are comfortable with an episodic pace. It is a less suitable pick if you expect fast plot turns or comedy that stays light throughout. The film’s greatest strength is the warmth it brings to people living through different forms of isolation; its loose structure means that warmth will matter more to some viewers than its momentum.
