Dr. S. Robert Levine remembers Mary Tyler Moore’s peach-colored, vintage-lace wedding dress—and the joyful moment friends lifted the newlyweds in chairs. Moore and Levine married on November 23, 1983; Levine shared the memories in an anniversary interview with PEOPLE, as recounted by Parade and Geo News.

Moore designed her own wedding dress, Levine recalled. Geo News quotes him describing it as “peach in color with this beautiful vintage lace.” Parade also reports that the dress was peach and made with vintage lace.

Levine remembered castmates from The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Moore’s close friends and her dance friends among the guests, according to the accounts of his PEOPLE interview. Fox News identifies the venue as The Pierre Hotel in New York City; that venue detail is reported by Fox News rather than the other accounts cited here.

During the celebration, friends lifted Moore and Levine in chairs. Parade says the couple held opposite ends of a long napkin as they were raised. Levine recalled the joy on both their faces, calling the moment “very special.”

A marriage that lasted until Moore’s death
