Reports published in July 2025 said body-camera footage and a mugshot had been released after former Olympic gymnast Mary Lou Retton’s May 17 arrest in Fairmont, West Virginia. The footage reportedly shows field sobriety testing in a parking lot, with an officer allowing Retton to use supplemental oxygen. Separately, the Associated Press reported that she entered a no-contest plea on June 10 and was fined $100.
What the body-camera footage reportedly shows
WSAZ/WDTV reported on July 9, 2025, that Fairmont police footage of the arrest had been released. Its account says the video shows field sobriety testing in a parking lot and that an officer allowed Retton to use supplemental oxygen during the testing. The Independent reported the previous day that a mugshot and body-camera video had been released.
Those descriptions are news accounts of the footage, not a claim that this article independently reviewed the complete video. The reports do not establish a blood- or breath-alcohol concentration.
What was reported about the May 17 stop
The Associated Press reported that Fairmont police responded to a report of a Porsche being driven erratically in Retton’s hometown. According to the criminal complaint as described by the AP, Retton smelled of alcohol and slurred her words; officers also reported seeing a container of wine in the passenger seat. Local coverage places the stop in an AutoZone parking lot and describes field sobriety testing.

These are observations attributed to the complaint, police account, or news reporting. They should not be treated as a reported laboratory or breathalyzer result.

What the court outcome means—and does not establish
The AP reported a no-contest plea and a $100 fine. A no-contest plea is the reported court disposition; the original DUI charge should not be described as a conviction without explaining that outcome. The reported fine is specific to this case, not a general guide to DUI penalties.

Neither the roadside-test descriptions nor the plea report supplies a measured blood-alcohol concentration. The available coverage does not state a BAC, so one should not be inferred from the video or from the reported observations.

In a statement released through her attorney and reproduced by the AP, Retton said: “What happened was completely unacceptable. I make no excuses.” She also apologized to her family, friends, and fans, and said she was determined to learn and grow from the experience.
