He announced in August 2018 that the season then airing would be his last, after seven seasons.
Why did Max Joseph leave Catfish?
In his departure statement, Joseph said he had been “straddling two careers as TV host and filmmaker” and that his life could “no longer sustain” the pace. He described the decision as sad, but said it was time to move on while the show was still going strong. TVLine reproduced his statement, and TheWrap reported the same explanation.
Filmmaking was an active career, not just a future ambition: TheWrap noted that Joseph made his feature directorial debut with We Are Your Friends in 2015. His public explanation was that balancing both careers had become unsustainable.
When did he announce his exit?
Joseph announced on August 8, 2018, that the season then airing would be his last. TheWrap described the departure as coming after seven seasons. In his statement, Joseph himself cited Catfish’s seven seasons, 115 episodes and 31 specials; those are the figures he gave at the time, rather than an independently audited count.

Was Max Joseph fired or feuding with Nev Schulman?
The cited contemporaneous accounts do not substantiate a firing, feud or other hidden reason. Joseph’s own explanation was the difficulty of sustaining his work as both a host and a filmmaker, so claims beyond that should be treated as speculation rather than established fact.
Nev Schulman’s public farewell was supportive. He said he was sad Joseph was leaving but glad he was “following his heart,” according to TVLine’s account. TheWrap also quoted Schulman praising Joseph’s ability to listen, empathize and advise.

Yes.
