The series is most compelling when it treats Hollywood as its arena and Simon Williams and Trevor Slattery as two difficult, lonely actors trying to make a connection. It is less interested in superhero spectacle than in the cost of chasing a role—and, despite its MCU setting, its creators designed it to work without extensive franchise homework.
What is Marvel’s Wonder Man about?
Simon Williams, played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, is an aspiring actor struggling to establish his career. After meeting Trevor Slattery (Ben Kingsley), a veteran performer whose biggest roles may be behind him, Simon learns that director Von Kovak is remaking the superhero film Wonder Man. Both men pursue roles in the production, but Simon has an additional complication: he is trying to keep his own superpowers hidden while chasing the title part. Disney’s launch feature and the Disney+ listing establish that premise.
The show’s central question is not simply whether Simon can land a superhero role. It is whether two actors accustomed to performing for others can become friends when ambition, insecurity, and the entertainment business keep getting in the way. Co-creator and director Destin Daniel Cretton described the intended tone as “hilarious, smart, weird, full of heart,” and as “a comedy about two lonely narcissists learning how to be friends,” in a D23 interview.
Does the series work as a character drama?
TIME critic Judy Berman’s review reads the season as a two-hander: the emphasis is on Simon and Trevor’s performances, histories, and evolving friendship rather than a steady climb toward a huge superhero showdown. Berman describes Simon being fired from American Horror Story and the pair’s pursuit of roles in the fictional remake. That Hollywood frame gives the series a distinct subject: not fame in the abstract, but the awkward auditions, fragile status, and self-invention that accompany trying to build a career.

The relationship is the show’s strongest organizing idea. Simon and Trevor are both actors, but their different career positions make their partnership more than a simple mentor-and-student arrangement. Their attempts to help one another also expose the vanity and vulnerability Cretton’s description suggests. Berman praises the leads’ performances and the specificity of the setting, while noting that the story’s character focus comes at the expense of broader ensemble development.
How does Wonder Man handle superhero stories?
Simon’s concealed powers connect the Hollywood story to the superhero genre, but the series does not make large-scale action its main attraction. Berman identifies the use of superpowers as a metaphor for difference as familiar, and describes the finale as advancing character arcs rather than staging an enormous laser battle. That is a useful measure of the show’s priorities: the powers matter to Simon’s situation, but the central drama remains his career and his relationship with Trevor.

The season’s most striking genre detour is “Doorman.” In the episode described by Berman, a nightclub doorman, played by Byron Bowers, touches mysterious goo and becomes a literal door that people can pass through. Josh Gad appears as himself. The premise turns a strange superpower into a self-contained, offbeat story, illustrating how the series can use comic-book material for oddball character comedy rather than conventional action escalation.
How much MCU knowledge do you need?
Not much, according to the creators’ stated intent. Co-creator and head writer Andrew Guest called Wonder Man a “no-homework show” in the D23 interview. Trevor’s earlier appearances in Iron Man 3 and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings provide continuity, but Guest said viewers do not need to have watched every Marvel film or series. The Walt Disney Company’s interview feature likewise records the team’s aim to make a distinct show that could appeal beyond the usual MCU audience. Those are creative aims, not a guarantee that every viewer will respond the same way.

For a new viewer, the practical draw is the Hollywood setup and the Simon–Trevor pairing; prior knowledge chiefly adds context to Trevor. You can follow the premise without treating the season as a puzzle that requires a franchise viewing order.
Where does the season fall short?
Berman’s main criticism is that most female characters are underwritten. That matters in a series so focused on the leads: when the surrounding characters receive less depth, the Hollywood world can feel narrower than its premise promises. The other limitation she identifies is the familiar metaphor of powers standing in for difference. The character-first approach may be a welcome change from escalating spectacle, but it does not make those weaknesses disappear.

Release details and episode list
Marvel Television’s first season consists of eight episodes, released together on Disney+ in the United States on January 27, 2026. Disney/ABC announced an 6 p.m. Pacific Time launch; the release announcement gives that U.S. time. Disney’s UK announcement placed the local debut on January 28, so the calendar date differs by territory. The official listing names the episodes:

Wonder Man was created by Destin Daniel Cretton and Andrew Guest. Disney’s listing rates it TV-14 and names Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Ben Kingsley, X Mayo, Zlatko Burić, and Arian Moayed among the cast. Disney/ABC said the soundtrack, featuring an original score by Joel P. West, was due on digital platforms January 30, 2026; that announcement does not establish a physical soundtrack edition.
