Marvel’s planned Blade reboot starring Mahershala Ali has no confirmed director or release date, and Ali said in July 2026 that the project was no longer going forward. The latest reporting, published October 4, 2026, describes the film as all but nixed at Marvel. It has not been made.
Is the new Blade movie still happening?
There is no evidence in the latest reporting that Marvel is actively making the reboot. Ali, who was announced for the role in 2019, said on July 31, 2026: “If they wanted to do it, we would’ve done it.” He also said he was ready to move on from questions about the film. The Guardian reported his comments; a later October 4, 2026 report from TheWrap characterized the project as all but nixed at Marvel.

That is a change from July 2025, when Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige said Ali remained attached to the version then under development. Feige’s comment described the project’s status at that time; Ali’s 2026 remarks are more recent.
Who is directing the new Blade movie?
No director is confirmed for an active production. Bassam Tariq joined the project in 2021 and left in 2022. Yann Demange later directed another development version, but the film did not proceed to production. The October 2026 report does not name a replacement director or describe an active schedule.

Tariq offered his perspective on the creative challenge, saying it felt like “this impossible task of trying to compete with the first superhero movie, which is Wesley Snipes’s iconic ‘Blade.’” That is his reflection on the challenge, not Marvel’s official explanation for the project’s fate.
When will the new Blade movie be released?
No current release date is established. Marvel removed the film from its release calendar, and the latest reporting does not indicate that it has a production schedule. Earlier announced dates were delayed and are historical, not upcoming release plans.

Why was the Blade movie delayed?
In a July 20, 2025 interview with TheWrap, Feige said Marvel had paused the project because it was not confident in the script. He described a creative direction that had shifted from a 1930s setting to a modern-day story. The article reported four script versions and named Eric Pearson as the writer then working on it; these details describe development at that point, not the film’s current status.
Feige said Marvel wanted a distinctive story rather than a familiar vampire-hunting setup: “We didn’t want to simply just put a leather outfit on him and have him start killing vampires. It had to be unique and it fell right into the time when we started pulling back and saying ‘only accept insanely great’ and it wasn’t insanely great at the time.”

In September 2026, Ali said he still did not know why the film ultimately failed to happen. Asked about Feige calling it a major failure, Ali said, “To this day, I don’t know why it didn’t happen,” and agreed with Feige’s assessment. His comment does not erase Feige’s earlier account of the script pause; it reflects Ali’s stated uncertainty about the project’s final outcome.

| Date | What was reported |
|---|---|
| 2019 | Marvel announced the reboot with Mahershala Ali attached to play Blade. |
| 2021–2022 | Bassam Tariq joined as director, then left in 2022; the project continued through development changes. |
| July 2025 | Feige said Marvel had paused because it lacked confidence in the script; he described a shift from a 1930s setting to a modern-day version. |
| July 2026 | Ali said the film was no longer going forward and that he was ready to move on from questions about it. |
| October 2026 | TheWrap described the project as all but nixed at Marvel; no director or release date was identified. |
The dated statements matter: the 2025 comments document a development phase, while Ali’s 2026 remarks and the October report describe a later, markedly different status. The earlier period-setting and modern-day drafts were development approaches, not two completed films.
