Marvel Zombies has a strong hook: a TV-MA animated Marvel series full of grisly action, familiar heroes in unfamiliar roles, and a world swallowed by a zombie plague. But spectacle is not the same as a story that lands. The show’s animation and gore make an impression; its uneven writing and tone keep it from becoming the fresh, fully realized Marvel detour it could have been.
What is Marvel Zombies?
Marvel Zombies is a four-episode animated series on Disney+, rated TV-MA. Disney’s synopsis sets the story after the Avengers are overtaken by a zombie plague: survivors cross a dystopian landscape searching for a way to end the threat. The listed cast includes Elizabeth Olsen, Florence Pugh, David Harbour, Paul Rudd, Simu Liu, and Iman Vellani. Disney’s episode descriptions trace the survivors’ encounters with escalating horrors through a “bloody end.” (Disney+)
The series premiered September 24, 2025, according to Rotten Tomatoes. It is a deliberately adult entry in Marvel animation, not a children’s cartoon; its rating and explicit violence are central to its identity.
Do you need to watch What If…? first?
No. The show expands the zombie setting introduced in What If…?, but Marvel’s official behind-the-scenes interview says it is not a direct continuation of that episode’s cliffhanger. Director, writer, and executive producer Bryan Andrews and writer Zeb Wells discuss the series as its own story in that connected world. Marvel Television and Marvel Animation head Brad Winderbaum said, “You don’t need to know the lore to enjoy it; you’ll get what you need from just watching this one story, which makes it inviting.” (The Walt Disney Company)

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That makes this a reasonable starting point for viewers curious about the premise, although familiarity with Marvel characters and the earlier zombie episode may add context. It is also not a direct adaptation of the original Marvel Zombies comics.
What works: animation, gore, and an unusual team
The clearest success is the show’s visual commitment to its premise. Both TechRadar and GamesRadar+ highlight the gruesome action, and GamesRadar+ also praises the animation and the Kamala Khan, Riri Williams, and Kate Bishop team-up. The series gets energy from putting recognizable characters into a bleak survival story and letting the action turn genuinely graphic. Those choices give it a distinctive identity within the MCU’s animated output. (TechRadar; GamesRadar+)

Kamala is also a natural emotional anchor for this kind of story. Andrews described her as an interesting foil because she is young, naïve, and still learning her powers, raising the question of whether she can hold on to hope. That premise gives the series a potentially compelling contrast: a hopeful hero trying to make moral sense of a world that has become monstrous. The show’s ambition is clearer than the consistency of its follow-through.
Where the series falters: story, stakes, and humor
The two cited reviews agree on the broad appeal but differ on how well the series delivers. TechRadar describes it as terrifying, gruesome, and atmospheric, yet finds the story increasingly frustrating and the overall result only occasionally good. GamesRadar+ is more positive, calling it a fun expansion with Easter eggs and animated action, but says the humor, some character choices, and the world-saving plot’s intended gravity do not always work. That split points to the show’s central weakness: its most effective elements are often immediate—an image, a kill, a character combination—while its larger dramatic structure has a harder time making those moments accumulate into satisfying stakes. The comedy can also disrupt the horror rather than sharpen it. The result is engaging in bursts, but not as sustained or emotionally forceful as its premise suggests.
Is Marvel Zombies worth watching?
For viewers who want a short, gory Marvel experiment, yes: four episodes offer a brisk alternate-world adventure with striking violence, recognizable characters, and an appealing central trio. For viewers looking for a tightly built horror story or a major emotional payoff, the reviews’ shared reservations about story and tone are worth taking seriously. The series is more successful as a vivid variation on the MCU than as a fully convincing zombie drama.

Reception is mixed-to-positive rather than definitive. Rotten Tomatoes listed a 66% Tomatometer from 35 reviews and a 67% Popcornmeter from 1,000+ ratings when accessed October 7, 2026; both figures and their underlying counts can change. The individual reviews explain the divide better than the aggregate: the gore and animation appeal, but the story’s construction and tonal choices are less dependable. (Rotten Tomatoes)

Marvel’s catalog lists a Marvel Zombies trade paperback collecting issues #1–5, written by Robert Kirkman and pencilled by Sean Phillips. That volume belongs to the comic franchise; it is not a tie-in edition or a direct source adaptation of this four-episode series. (Marvel)
