The major Hulk color identities to know are green Bruce Banner, gray Hulk—including his later Joe Fixit persona—and Red Hulk, who is General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross. They are not simply three colors in one personality chart: gray has an early place in Hulk’s publication history and a later story identity, while Red Hulk is a separate character.
Green Hulk: Bruce Banner’s familiar form
Green is the Hulk most readers recognize: the gamma-powered form of scientist Bruce Banner. Marvel’s Hulk character profile describes heavy gamma-radiation exposure transforming Banner into the green Hulk.
Gray Hulk: an early look and the Joe Fixit identity
Gray is not just a later variation. Marvel’s listing for Hulk: Gray #1 describes its story as one about the Hulk “before he was even green.” The issue, written by Jeph Loeb and pencilled by Tim Sale, was published October 15, 2003, and revisits the origin-era character.
Joe Fixit is a later gray-Hulk role
In a later storyline, the gray Hulk worked as a bouncer at a Las Vegas casino and became known as Joe Fixit. Marvel’s retrospective on the Gray Hulk calls this version sly and cynical and describes him as one reflection of Banner’s complex character. Joe Fixit is an important gray-Hulk identity, not the only meaning of gray in Hulk stories.

It is a collection of that story, not an encyclopedia of every Hulk color.
Red Hulk: General Ross, not a red Banner
Red Hulk is General Thaddeus E. “Thunderbolt” Ross, the longtime Hulk hunter—not Bruce Banner in a red phase. Marvel’s Red Hulk biography says Ross was transformed after the Leader and M.O.D.O.K. used radiation siphoned from the Hulk.
Where to start reading
Marvel’s Red Hulk reading guide identifies Hulk (2008) #1 as the character’s debut and #23 as the issue that reveals Ross’s identity and transformation.
How the three identities compare
| Color | Identity | Story role | Named persona |
|---|---|---|---|
| Green | Bruce Banner | Banner’s familiar gamma-powered Hulk form | Hulk |
| Gray | Bruce Banner’s Hulk | An early appearance and, in later stories, a distinct incarnation | Joe Fixit in the casino-bouncer storyline |
| Red | General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross | A separate character transformed through a plot involving the Leader, M.O.D.O.K., and radiation siphoned from Hulk | Red Hulk |
Does each Hulk color have a fixed meaning?
No universal color-to-personality or color-to-power key is established by these stories. Green is Banner’s familiar Hulk; gray connects an early presentation with Joe Fixit’s later role; red identifies Ross as a separate character. Those distinctions do not justify ranking strength or assigning fixed abilities by color alone.
