Early reviews are strongly positive: critics praise Timothée Chalamet’s performance as the driving force in Josh Safdie’s frantic, darkly funny film. They describe it as Oscar-caliber, not as a guarantee of an award. Marty Supreme is a 149-minute period drama about a gifted, abrasive table-tennis hustler—not a conventional sports biopic.
What is Marty Supreme about?
Set in 1952, the film follows Marty Mauser, a Lower East Side table-tennis player determined to turn his talent into money, recognition and championship success. His pursuit takes him from New York to London and Tokyo. The cast includes Gwyneth Paltrow, Odessa A’zion, Kevin O’Leary, Tyler Okonma (Tyler, the Creator), Abel Ferrara and Fran Drescher. Variety and The Guardian describe a story that moves beyond the sport into a portrait of ambition and self-invention.
Marty is loosely inspired by real champion Marty “The Needle” Reisman, but the film is a stylized dramatic reimagining, not a factual biography. Its table-tennis matches are part of a wider story about a man who wants to be seen as exceptional and is willing to manipulate people to get there.
What do the first reviews say about Chalamet?
Chalamet’s performance is the early reviews’ central point of agreement. Rotten Tomatoes’ December 3, 2025 roundup highlights critics’ praise for his Oscar-worthy turn and calls the film a “riveting, funny, thrilling, impeccably cast roller coaster ride” (Rotten Tomatoes). Variety critic Peter Debruge calls it the defining performance of Chalamet’s still-burgeoning career, while Variety’s Ramin Setoodeh describes it as his best performance yet (Variety first reactions; Variety review).

- Timothee Chalamet, Gwyneth Paltrow
The praise does not depend on Marty being likable. Debruge writes that Chalamet “makes you want to believe in this instantly iconic character too … even if sometimes you also want to strangle him.” That tension is the performance’s appeal: Marty has charisma and drive, but also ego, dishonesty and a talent for making his problems other people’s problems.
“Oscar-worthy” is a critical assessment, not a prediction or a confirmed nomination. These first reactions establish strong enthusiasm for the acting; they do not establish an awards outcome.
Is Marty Supreme like Uncut Gems?
There is a meaningful resemblance in the anxious, high-pressure energy associated with Josh Safdie’s filmmaking, but Marty Supreme is not simply another sports-centered Uncut Gems. Its mix includes an underdog sports story, a crime caper, dark social comedy and character study. Variety’s Setoodeh evoked Uncut Gems alongside The Catcher in the Rye and Jerry Maguire to convey that blend (Variety).
The film’s scale also shifts: it begins in intimate Lower East Side spaces and expands toward international championship settings. Critics praise the restless cinematography by Darius Khondji, Jack Fisk’s period design and Daniel Lopatin’s synth-oriented score as part of the film’s momentum (Rotten Tomatoes; Variety).

Who is likely to enjoy it—and who may not?
Critics’ enthusiasm is strongest for the film’s nerve, performances and craft. The Guardian calls it a “spectacular screwball ping-pong nightmare” and describes a “marathon sprint of gonzo calamities and uproar” (The Guardian). That is a useful guide to its pace: expect sustained agitation and escalating trouble rather than the measured rhythm of a traditional sports drama.
- A good fit: viewers who enjoy kinetic filmmaking, morally complicated protagonists, dark comedy and sports stories that are about more than winning.
- A tougher fit: viewers who want an uplifting underdog, a straightforward biography, calm pacing or a lead character who behaves admirably.
The runtime is 149 minutes, as listed by Variety and The Guardian, and Marty’s abrasive conduct is a core part of the drama rather than a brief detour (Variety; The Guardian). The film also contains explicit material, so it may not suit viewers looking for a family-friendly sports movie.
