Martha, R.J. Cutler’s 2024 documentary about Martha Stewart, arrived on Netflix on October 30, 2024. It follows her path from teenage modeling and a Wall Street stockbroker job to a career as a lifestyle and business figure, and places the scandal and prison period within the wider story of her rise and reinvention.
What is the Martha Stewart documentary about?
Netflix presents Martha as a portrait of Stewart’s life and career, rather than a film solely about her arrest. Its account spans her working-class upbringing, early work as a model and stockbroker, growth in entertaining and home media, the scandal and prison period, and her subsequent reinvention. These are the film’s subjects and framing, not an independent assessment of Stewart’s career.
The documentary is told partly in Stewart’s own words. Netflix says it includes interviews with Stewart and people close to her, as well as personal archival material: diaries, letters, photographs, and previously unseen footage. Director R.J. Cutler described the project as an opportunity to explore why Stewart had been a significant cultural and business figure for decades. Netflix Tudum’s film feature outlines its scope and production.
How does it handle the arrest and prison period?
The scandal and prison period form part of the documentary’s broader life-and-career narrative. Netflix’s descriptions establish that the film addresses this chapter, but they are not a substitute for court records and do not, by themselves, establish the precise charges, legal chronology, or sentence. Readers seeking those particulars should consult primary legal records rather than infer them from the film’s overview.
