What is Iron Lung about?
After an event called the Quiet Rapture makes all known stars and habitable planets disappear, a convict is sent in a compact submarine to explore a blood ocean on a desolate moon. The sealed setting and dangerous mission turn the premise into a confined survival-horror story.
The film adapts David Szymanski’s Iron Lung video game. Mark Edward Fischbach, known online as Markiplier, wrote and directed the feature, which Rotten Tomatoes lists as a 2026 horror and science-fiction film.
Is Iron Lung good on Rotten Tomatoes?
Rotten Tomatoes’ written reception is mixed: its critics consensus describes the adaptation as claustrophobic, at times “just plain stifling,” and says its production is more interesting than its story. It also credits the film with enough atmosphere to make Fischbach a filmmaker to watch. The site’s audience summary characterizes it as a slow burn whose mood and atmosphere leave a lasting impression. That distinction matters when interpreting the score. Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer reflects critics’ reviews, while its Popcornmeter represents audience ratings; one is not a substitute for the other. Forbes contributor Tim Lammers reported an early snapshot on February 4, 2026: 43% from 21 critics’ reviews and 90% from more than 1,000 verified audience ratings (Forbes). Those figures describe that dated snapshot, not the film’s current scores.
How did the independently released film become a hit?
Fischbach’s route from a self-funded production to a wide theatrical release was unusually hands-on. In a February 23, 2026 interview with the YouTube Official Blog, he discussed a three-year production that used 80,000 gallons of fake blood. The article reported that he self-funded, directed, starred in and ultimately self-distributed the film, which reached more than 3,000 screens.
The same article framed the film as a $3 million independent production that had reached $37 million globally by its publication date. That is a historical figure, not a final box-office total; no current final gross is established here.
Fischbach told TheWrap he expected self-distribution to mean 200 theaters at most. In that account, fans requesting screenings from local theaters helped the release expand beyond his initial expectation. It illustrates how this particular rollout grew, rather than proving that fan requests will produce the same result for other films.

When was it released, and how long is it?
Rotten Tomatoes lists a wide theatrical release on January 30, 2026, and a runtime of 2 hours and 7 minutes. It gives the film an R rating for gore, language and bloody images. The listing names Markiplier Studios as both production company and distributor.
