Mark Zuckerberg wore a Greubel Forsey Hand Made 1 in the video announcing Meta’s planned US content-moderation changes on January 7, 2025. The watch was reported at about US$895,500 before taxes or around US$906,000, so “$1 million” is rounded framing—not a confirmed transaction price or current quote. Its appearance drew criticism from some commentators who considered the contrast with the announcement out of touch; that reaction does not establish what most viewers thought or why Zuckerberg chose the watch.

What watch was Mark Zuckerberg wearing?

It was identified as the Greubel Forsey Hand Made 1, an elaborate mechanical watch from the Swiss independent watchmaker. Time+Tide’s January 8, 2025 coverage describes a 43.5 mm white-gold case, an open dial and a tourbillon positioned at 7 o’clock. The model name and identification were also reported by The Guardian.

Time+Tide reports that the watch is made largely by hand using hand tools rather than automation, with exceptions including gaskets and the crystal. The article attributes an estimate of roughly 6,000 labor hours per watch and production of about three watches annually to Greubel Forsey. These are reported craftsmanship and output claims, not independently verified current specifications.

How much does the Hand Made 1 cost?

The coverage gives two nearby but distinct figures. The Guardian attributed a retail figure of US$895,500 before taxes to Bloomberg. Time+Tide described the watch as worth around US$906,000 in its January 8, 2025 article. Neither figure establishes a current selling price or what Zuckerberg paid. The headline shorthand “$1 million” rounds those reported amounts.

Why did the watch become part of the Meta story?

Zuckerberg wore it in a video announcing Meta’s planned changes to US content moderation on January 7, 2025. The announcement concerned contested questions about speech, enforcement and political content; an exceptionally expensive watch was therefore visually prominent in a message about platform rules affecting a vast audience.

Time+Tide’s Jamie Weiss documented criticism from some commentators who saw that juxtaposition as tone-deaf or out of touch. This records examples of reaction, not a representative measure of public opinion. The available reporting does not establish that the watch caused the policy controversy or reveal Zuckerberg’s reason for wearing it.

What changes did Meta announce?

In a January 7, 2025 post by Chief Global Affairs Officer Joel Kaplan, Meta said it would begin the changes in the United States. The company framed them as a way to reduce enforcement mistakes and support free expression; that is Meta’s stated rationale, not an independently established assessment.

  • Third-party fact-checking: Meta said it would end its US third-party fact-checking program and transition toward a Community Notes model.
  • Content restrictions: Meta said it would lift some restrictions on certain topics.
  • Enforcement priorities: Meta said automated enforcement would focus on illegal and high-severity violations.
  • Political content: Meta said political-content recommendations in feeds would become more personalized.

Meta wrote, “A program intended to inform too often became a tool to censor.” That is the company’s characterization of its existing program. On Community Notes, Meta said its intended design was: “Once the program is up and running, Meta won’t write Community Notes or decide which ones show up.” These statements describe Meta’s position and announced plan.

What numbers did Meta give about enforcement mistakes?

Meta’s January 7 post cited its December 2024 estimate that “one to two out of every 10” enforcement actions might have been mistakes. It also said the company removed millions of pieces of content daily, representing less than 1% of content produced each day. These are company-reported figures.

In a May 29, 2025 update, Meta reported a “roughly 50% reduction in enforcement mistakes” in the United States, comparing Q4 2024 with Q1 2025. The company also said the low prevalence of violating content remained largely unchanged for most problem areas. Those, too, are Meta’s own measurements and account of the results.

How to read the controversy

The watch’s identity and the policy announcement are separate facts; the controversy lies in their juxtaposition. Some observers criticized the choice as out of touch, while the available sources do not show how widespread that view was. Nor do they substantiate an explanation of Zuckerberg’s personal intent. The watch’s reported price helps explain why its appearance attracted attention, but it does not settle the merits of Meta’s policy changes.
