Mark Zuckerberg did not announce a literal reboot of 2000s-era Facebook. During Meta’s January 29, 2025 earnings call, he said that returning to “OG Facebook” was a major priority. The concrete follow-through was a friend-focused Friends tab, followed by broader Feed, navigation, search, and discovery updates—not a platform-wide return to a chronological Feed, ad-free browsing, or the old interface.
What Zuckerberg actually said
On January 29, 2025, during Meta’s Q4 2024 earnings call, Zuckerberg described a “return to OG Facebook” as one of his priorities for the year.
He argued that Facebook still had an opportunity to become more culturally influential and indicated that some changes could begin rolling out within approximately six months. He also acknowledged that the strategy could involve trade-offs with short-term business optimization.
Those comments were a strategic direction, not a detailed product specification. Zuckerberg did not announce a complete visual redesign, a chronological main Feed, the removal of advertising, or the elimination of recommendations.

What “OG Facebook” means
In context, “OG Facebook” refers mainly to the service’s original social-networking purpose: helping people see what their real-life friends are doing and interact with them directly.
That means a stronger emphasis on:
- Posts and updates from friends
- Simple social discovery
- Existing personal networks
- Friend content rather than celebrity, creator, commercial, or suggested content in at least some parts of Facebook
Meta’s own explanation was that the “magic of friends” had faded and that Facebook needed to make it easier to find friends’ content. That framing supports a friend-first interpretation more strongly than the idea of a literal restoration of Facebook’s old colors, layout, or business model.
The first concrete change: the Friends tab
On March 27, 2025, Meta introduced a redesigned Friends tab in the United States and Canada. Meta described it as the first of several “OG Facebook experiences” planned for the year.
The tab was designed to show content exclusively from a user’s Facebook friends, including:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Posts
- Stories
- Reels shared by friends
- Birthdays
- Friend requests
Meta said the Friends tab would contain no recommended content. This distinction is important: the announcement described a separate friend-focused destination, not a conversion of Facebook as a whole into a recommendation-free service.
How Meta said users could pin Friends
The announced path was:
- Open Facebook’s Home Feed.
- Select the profile picture.
- Open Settings & Privacy, then Settings.
- Choose Tab bar.
- Select Customize the bar.
- Choose Friends and select Pin.
Facebook frequently changes menus and rollout availability by country, device, account, and app version. The path above reflects Meta’s March 2025 announcement and may not appear identically for every user.

What did not come back
The available announcements do not establish that Facebook restored the old experience across the platform.
| Claim | What the evidence shows |
|---|---|
| More visibility for friends’ content | Supported |
| A dedicated friend-only destination | Supported through the Friends tab |
| A fully chronological main Feed | Not established |
| Removal of advertising | Not established |
| Removal of Reels and recommendations everywhere | Not established |
| Restoration of the 2000s interface | No evidence |
| Return to Facebook’s original social purpose | Consistent with Meta’s framing |
The main Home Feed therefore should not be described as having become purely chronological or friend-only. Meta’s wording specifically applied the friend-only experience to the Friends tab.

Facebook was not abandoning video, commerce, or discovery
The “OG” initiative existed alongside a broader effort to make Facebook useful for discovery and younger adults.
In May 2024, Meta said Facebook was focused on building “the next generation of social media for young adults,” with investments in social discovery and artificial intelligence. In October, Meta announced tests involving Local and Explore tabs that brought together content from Reels, Marketplace, Groups, and Events, while also giving video a more prominent role.
Meta’s December 2025 update described further changes, including:
- A simpler Feed
- More prominent access to Reels, Friends, Marketplace, and Profile
- Refreshed navigation
- Cleaner tab notifications
- A more immersive search-results grid
- New ways to surface common interests between friends
These updates point to an ongoing reorganization rather than a one-time restoration of “classic Facebook.” The company was trying to make friend content easier to find without giving up video, creators, commerce, Groups, Events, search, recommendations, or AI.

Why Meta wanted a friend-first reset
Facebook’s challenge was not simply that its interface had changed. Its cultural position had changed too.
Younger users increasingly spend time on discovery-first and video-centered services such as TikTok, while Instagram and Snapchat also compete for attention. Meta’s own strategy statements acknowledged the need to build Facebook for young adults. At the same time, many established Facebook users are more interested in family updates, local communities, and personal connections than in an endless stream of recommended content.
A friend-focused destination addresses both concerns only partially. It gives longtime users a clearer route to personal updates, while allowing Meta to keep its broader discovery and video systems elsewhere in the app.
That separation may also explain why Meta introduced a new destination instead of dismantling the existing Feed. A friend-only stream can feel more relevant, but it may contain fewer posts when friends do not post often. Recommendations, public content, creator posts, Marketplace listings, and video provide much more material for engagement and monetization.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe central tension in the strategy
Facebook is now expected to be several products at once:
- A network for friends and family
- A short-form video platform
- A creator and business ecosystem
- A local-discovery service
- A marketplace
- A home for Groups and Events
- An AI-enabled social product
Those purposes do not always point in the same direction. A friend-first experience favors relevance and familiarity. A discovery-driven experience favors variety, scale, and algorithmic recommendations. A commercial platform benefits from businesses, creators, advertising, and transactions.

Zuckerberg’s comments about possible trade-offs with short-term business optimization can therefore be read as an acknowledgment that rebuilding Facebook’s social identity may not maximize every immediate engagement or advertising metric. That is an inference from the remarks, not a stated guarantee that Meta would accept lower revenue.
Was this really a return to the old Facebook?
No—not literally.
The evidence supports a partial return to one principle of early Facebook: helping users see what their friends are doing. It does not support the claim that Meta restored the old interface, removed ads, ended algorithmic ranking, or abandoned Reels, commerce, Groups, creators, recommendations, and AI.
Nostalgia also overlooks how different the original service was. Facebook once had a smaller user base, fewer businesses and creators, less video and commerce, and a different set of safety, moderation, and advertising pressures. Recreating the old design would not recreate the old social environment.

That was clearly part of Meta’s broader strategy, but the cited evidence establishes an objective—not a completed revival.
Younger users may appreciate easier access to friends, but a friend-first design alone may not overcome the appeal of platforms built around short-form video, creator culture, private messaging, or different social norms. Meta’s own roadmap reflects that uncertainty: it paired friend-focused changes with Reels, Local, Explore, Events, Marketplace, search, and AI.
A meaningful assessment would require evidence about adoption, satisfaction, usage among young adults, and the effect on engagement and advertising. The product announcements alone do not prove that Facebook regained cultural influence.

What users should expect
The practical change is best understood as an additional route to personal content. Users who want updates from friends can look for the Friends tab where it is available, while the main Facebook experience continues to include recommended and public content.
Availability can vary by geography, platform, account, and app version. The original Friends-tab rollout was announced for the United States and Canada, so users elsewhere should not assume that the same tab or settings path is available.
Meta’s January 2025 content-moderation announcements about “free expression” were a separate policy story. They should not be confused with the product strategy behind the Friends tab or with a technical return to old Facebook.
The timeline in brief
- May 31, 2024: Meta outlined a Facebook strategy focused on young adults, social discovery, and AI.
- October 4, 2024: Meta announced tests involving Local, Explore, Video, Messenger Communities, and AI-related features.
- January 29, 2025: Zuckerberg discussed a 2025 “return to OG Facebook” during Meta’s Q4 2024 earnings call.
- January 30, 2025: TechCrunch reported on the comments and Facebook’s younger-user challenge.
- March 27, 2025: Meta launched the redesigned Friends tab in the United States and Canada.
- December 2025: Meta announced additional Feed, navigation, search, and content-discovery changes.
Bottom line
“OG Facebook” was a promise to restore emphasis on friends, not a promise to rewind Facebook to the 2000s. Meta delivered that idea through a dedicated Friends experience while continuing to build Facebook around Reels, recommendations, Marketplace, Groups, search, creators, and AI.
