Maria Reviews: What Critics Are Saying About Angelina Jolie’s Singing

The short answer: Angelina Jolie really did train and sing for Maria, but she does not supply every voice heard in the film. The soundtrack deliberately combines Jolie’s newly recorded vocals with archival recordings of Maria Callas. Critics have largely admired Jolie’s physical and emotional commitment, while disagreeing about whether the finished blend sounds convincingly like Callas.

Jolie sings in Maria—but the film also uses Callas

The most accurate answer to the question “Can Angelina Jolie really sing opera in Maria?” is neither “yes, every note is hers” nor “no, she only lip-synced.” The production used a layered vocal track: Jolie recorded her own singing, breathing, and performance, while archival Maria Callas recordings were incorporated during the mix.

Director Pablo Larraín described the balance as changing according to the scene. Callas is more prominent in performances representing the soprano at the height of her career. Jolie becomes more prominent in moments depicting Callas’s later vocal decline. Netflix’s production material gives the same broad explanation.

That distinction matters because Maria is not a conventional “actress learns to sing like an opera star” showcase. The film is set during the final week of Callas’s life in September 1977, when her artistic identity, confidence, and voice are all connected to a sense of loss. The hybrid sound is part of that dramatic design.

How Jolie prepared for the role

According to Larraín, Jolie trained for approximately six or seven months with opera singers and coaches. Her preparation included posture, breathing, movement, Italian pronunciation, pitch, and the specific arias used in the film. Production notes say that she sang six arias and had to sing aloud—including in front of large groups of people—rather than simply mime every performance.

This preparation was important for more than the soundtrack. Opera singing changes the entire body: the head and neck position, facial muscles, breath control, rib movement, timing, and the way a performer reacts to the music. Jolie needed those mechanics to appear credible even when Callas’s archival voice was the dominant sound.

Larraín also emphasized that the effect was not created by a technological shortcut. Jolie had to sing in synchronization with the Callas recordings so that the two performances could be combined organically. The available production accounts describe recording, synchronization, and mixing—not an AI voice-cloning process.

Why some critics praised the singing

The most favorable reviews focused on singing as embodied acting rather than on whether Jolie could independently reproduce Callas’s legendary sound.

  • AUTHENTIC MINI DESIGN: Detailed, retro-inspired styling makes it perfect for display on desks, shelves, or as part of your growing mini music collection.
  • RogerEbert.com praised Jolie’s queenly presence and the visible mechanics of the performance. The review pointed to her facial muscles, breath, and full-body engagement as evidence that she was doing substantial singing work herself.
  • The New Yorker described the musical scenes as impressive and audacious, particularly because of the physical demands of opera. Its praise was directed less toward a claim that Jolie sounded identical to Callas and more toward the attitude, characterization, and dramatic control she brought to the role.
  • Vogue found the mixed Callas-and-Jolie sound extraordinary and emotionally powerful. The review also praised Jolie’s command of Callas’s imperiousness, humor, fragility, and shame.
  • WBUR and the Associated Press acknowledged the digital mixture but argued that Jolie made the voice seem to emerge from Callas’s wounded inner life. Their emphasis was on the performance’s emotional commitment and theatrical quality.
  • Time Out called Jolie committed and “on song,” while treating the singing as part of a polished overall portrayal rather than as evidence that she had become a professional soprano.

These reviews are not necessarily claiming that Jolie possesses Callas’s technique or vocal instrument. They are saying that her preparation makes the act of singing believable on screen. Her body looks as though it understands the music, and the character’s emotional state is carried through breath, posture, tension, and expression.

Why other critics heard a problem

The skeptical reviews evaluated the soundtrack differently. Instead of asking whether Jolie’s body convincingly performs an opera singer, they asked whether the final sound can withstand direct comparison with Callas’s original recordings.

  • The Guardian explicitly described the soundtrack as Jolie’s singing digitally fused with lip-synced Callas recordings. Peter Bradshaw found Jolie’s non-singing performance compelling, but felt that some scenes of vocal damage were less commanding than the contrast between Callas’s former greatness and her later decline.
  • Vanity Fair argued that Jolie struggled to make the huge notes and plaintive phrases feel as though they were genuinely coming from her. It described the result as an “uncanny-valley” effect, with some of the central singing moments among the film’s weaker passages.
  • Time respected Jolie’s dedication and recognized the blended track, but judged the result merely acceptable. The review also noted that listeners could experience an instinctive jolt when the mix leaned heavily toward Callas.

The criticism is understandable. Callas’s recordings are not neutral reference material: they are the sound of one of the most famous opera singers in history. When the soundtrack shifts from Jolie’s recorded voice toward archival Callas, the difference in vocal authority, tone, and scale can become noticeable. A listener who expects a seamless impersonation may hear the construction rather than disappear into it.

Why the reviews disagree

The critics are often judging two different performances at once.

Question What the film does well Where the criticism arises
Does Jolie look and behave like an opera singer? Her posture, breathing, facial work, diction, and physical effort create a convincing performance. That physical credibility cannot by itself reproduce Callas’s vocal instrument.
Does the finished track sound emotionally truthful? The mixture can make Callas’s decline feel intimate, damaged, and psychologically revealing. The transitions between voices can sound artificial or uncanny.
Does Jolie sound like Callas at her peak? She captures Callas’s presence, authority, vulnerability, and theatrical temperament. The film does not establish Jolie as an independent match for Callas’s operatic recordings.

The film’s structure intensifies this conflict. Maria uses memories, performances, and later-life scenes to place Callas’s former artistic power beside her deterioration. The contrast between the archival voice and Jolie’s more exposed contribution can therefore be interpreted as a deliberate metaphor for a disappearing identity—or as an audible reminder that two voices are being joined together.

What you are hearing in the film

When Callas is portrayed during her prime-career performances, the soundtrack is more likely to foreground archival Callas. In scenes centered on the older, weakened Callas, Jolie’s voice is more prominent. The exact balance varies by moment, so hearing Callas in a particular passage does not prove that Jolie reproduced it herself.

At the same time, it would be wrong to conclude that Jolie contributed only silent lip movements. She trained seriously, recorded vocals, sang aloud on set, and performed in synchronization with the source material. Her contribution is especially visible in the physical and emotional behavior surrounding the voice.

The film’s companion album provides another useful distinction. Warner Classics identifies the Maria original motion-picture soundtrack as a November 29, 2024 release on CD and vinyl. Netflix’s official account says the album uses restored Callas performances drawn from excerpts of nine operas featured in the film. Listening to the soundtrack can help clarify the relationship between the film’s dramatic mix and Callas’s archival material.

For readers who want a direct comparison, Maria Callas’s complete recordings offer a broader way to hear the original singer beyond the selected film excerpts. A highly specialized alternative is Warner Classics’ Maria Callas: The Complete Studio Recordings 1949–1969, a 69-CD collection intended primarily for serious opera collectors rather than casual viewers.

If you want the movie itself, Netflix lists Maria as a 2024 film with a runtime of approximately two hours and three minutes, starring Jolie. Availability can vary by country and by subscription catalog, so viewers should check their local Netflix listing.

Is Angelina Jolie an opera singer after making Maria?

No. The evidence supports a narrower and more interesting conclusion: Jolie undertook substantial vocal and physical training for a demanding acting role. That does not establish her as a professional opera singer or prove that she could perform Callas’s repertoire independently in a concert setting.

Likewise, Maria should not be treated as a documentary recording of Callas’s voice or as a pure Jolie vocal performance. It is a dramatic reconstruction whose sound design combines the two. The film asks the audience to experience Callas’s memories, decline, and fractured sense of self, not to hear an untouched vocal audition by Jolie.

Final verdict on Jolie’s singing in Maria

Critics largely agree that Jolie worked hard and that her physical portrayal of singing is substantial. They disagree about whether the finished vocal blend is convincing when heard as sound alone.

The fairest verdict is that Jolie is convincing as an actress embodying Callas: she learned the posture, breath, movement, language, and emotional discipline needed to make the performance feel lived-in. But the film does not present her as independently matching Callas’s legendary operatic voice. When the soundtrack works, the Jolie-Callas blend turns vocal decline into a powerful dramatic device. When it does not, listeners can hear the gap between Jolie and the archival recording.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Angelina Jolie do her own singing in Maria?

Partly. Jolie trained for months, recorded her own vocals, and sang aloud for the performance, but the finished soundtrack also uses archival Maria Callas recordings. The balance changes from scene to scene.

Does Angelina Jolie sing all six arias in Maria?

Production material says Jolie sang six arias for the film, but that does not mean the final versions are entirely her voice. Her recordings were combined with Callas’s archival performances during mixing.

Does Maria use AI to copy Maria Callas’s voice?

The available production accounts describe recording, synchronization, and mixing of Jolie’s voice with Callas recordings. They do not establish that the film used AI voice cloning.

Is Maria a documentary about Maria Callas?

No. It is a fictionalized biographical drama focused on the final week of Callas’s life. Its fragmentary, subjective structure uses memories and performances to explore her identity and vocal decline.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Angelina Jolie genuinely trained and sang for Maria, but the movie’s voice is a deliberate Jolie-and-Callas composite. Her performance is strongest as embodied, emotionally committed acting—not as proof that she independently sounds like Maria Callas.
