El 2 de abril de 2025, People en Español informó que Masalva se encontraba hospitalizado fuera de México en estado grave por una bacteria que entonces se describía como desconocida. Según esa nota, familiares y allegados crearon una campaña en GoFundMe para ayudar con los gastos hospitalarios. People en Español identifica al actor por su participación en Narcos: México y por interpretar al hijo del personaje de Fernando Colunga en El secreto de la familia Greco. En una nota retrospectiva publicada el 22 de agosto de 2025, El Universal situó la hospitalización en Dubái y reportó que Masalva había permanecido en coma aproximadamente un mes, seguido por varios meses de recuperación. En ese momento, el actor había reaparecido públicamente y trabajaba para recuperar su condición física. Secuelas y rehabilitación en 2026
Excélsior informó que Masalva recibió el alta del hospital en Dubái a mediados de julio de 2026 y comenzó una nueva etapa de rehabilitación en México. En una actualización publicada el 1 de octubre de 2026, basada en un video compartido por el actor, el medio reportó que la infección afectó su circulación y que, tras necrosis o gangrena, el equipo médico amputó los dedos de ambos pies. Masalva trabaja en recuperar movilidad y estabilidad. La misma cobertura reportó que perdió 28 kilos y permaneció más de 100 días en coma inducido; esos datos corresponden al relato divulgado sobre su caso, no a estadísticas médicas. La campaña fue reportada en 2025, pero el enlace histórico de GoFundMe incluido en esa cobertura devolvió un error 404 al consultarlo el 8 de octubre de 2026.
