Mamma Mia! presents Kalokairi as one sunlit Greek island, but no such single island exists. The 2008 film combines locations on Skopelos, Skiathos and mainland Pelion, with Villa Donna and most interiors built at Pinewood Studios in Buckinghamshire. A London building also doubles for Sam’s New York office.
That distinction matters if you are planning a location trip. The wedding chapel, Kastani Beach and the harbor from “Dancing Queen” are real places, but they are separated by water and, in one case, by a journey to the Greek mainland.

Skopelos: the main Mamma Mia! filming island
Skopelos supplied most of the film’s instantly recognizable outdoor scenery. The Northern Sporades island appears through its beaches, pine-covered coastline, harbor views, lanes and hilltop churches. The fictional geography of Kalokairi is therefore an edited cinematic landscape rather than a map of Skopelos.
Agios Ioannis Kastri Chapel
The wedding chapel is Agios Ioannis Kastri, near Glossa in northern Skopelos. It stands on a rock roughly 100 meters above the sea and is reached by a steep staircase carved into the rock.
#1 Best Overall
Local tourism information puts the climb at approximately 105 to 106 steps. Some travel accounts round that figure up considerably, but the Skopelos municipal tourism page specifies 106. Cars and taxis can reach the approach road; the final section must be completed on foot.
- Allow extra time for the climb rather than treating it as a quick roadside stop.
- Wear shoes suitable for uneven stone steps.
- Carry water, particularly in summer.
- Visit early or late in the day if possible, since the exposed staircase is uncomfortable in the midday heat.
The chapel is very small, and access to the interior can vary according to season and local arrangements. The exterior and staircase are the principal film sights. The movie also makes the wedding procession appear easier than it is in reality.
Kastani Beach
Kastani Beach, on Skopelos’s western coast, is the film’s best-known beach location. It features in musical sequences including “Lay All Your Love on Me” and “Does Your Mother Know.” Its sandy shore, clear water and wooded setting remain recognizable even though the production structures have gone.
The wooden jetty and beach bar seen on screen were temporary constructions for filming. They were removed afterward, so visitors should not expect to find the complete movie set. Kastani is approximately 15 kilometers from Skopelos Town, with an unpaved section on the approach road according to local visitor information.
This is a working beach, not a preserved backlot. The appearance can change with umbrellas, parked vehicles, boats and seasonal crowds, and the exact camera angle may not be easy to reproduce.
Glysteri Beach and the Villa Donna landscape
Glysteri Beach, around 4 kilometers north of Skopelos Town, provided additional coastal and landscape footage. It is often associated with the hillside setting around Villa Donna because the surrounding scenery resembles the hotel’s isolated Greek-island location.

- Factory sealed DVD
There is, however, an important correction to many simplified location guides: Villa Donna was not a real hotel overlooking Glysteri. The hotel complex was built on a soundstage at Pinewood Studios. Glysteri supplied the landscape and coastal atmosphere, not the actual villa.
Cape Amarantos
The pine-covered headland of Cape Amarantos, near Agnontas on Skopelos’s southern coast, appears in coastal and diary-related material connected with songs such as “Honey, Honey” and “Our Last Summer.”
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCape Amarantos is a relatively undeveloped natural area rather than a formal attraction with extensive facilities. Access includes a dirt road, and local guidance warns visitors not to assume that water, toilets or other tourist infrastructure will be available. Bring supplies, allow for rough conditions and avoid leaving the marked access route in a fragile coastal landscape.
Skopelos Town
Skopelos Town, also known as Chora, contributes harbor views, rooftops, narrow lanes and church scenes. These details help establish the island setting, but the town should not be treated as one continuous “Kalokairi village.” The film assembles its settlement from several real locations, selected angles and studio-built environments.
Skiathos: the arrival scenes
Neighboring Skiathos supplied harbor and town material, most notably the Old Port of Skiathos Town. The port is used for arrival scenes involving Sam, Harry and Bill, as well as transitional waterfront shots.
The Old Port remains a functioning public waterfront. Boats, traffic and summer crowds may make it look different from the film, and there is no preserved Mamma Mia! set to visit. Skiathos is also a useful transport gateway for a Skopelos trip because it has an airport and seasonal boat connections to the neighboring island.
Rank #3
Schedules vary significantly by season. Check ferry and water-taxi information for your actual travel date rather than relying on an old film-location itinerary.
Do not confuse Skiathos with Skopelos: the famous wedding chapel and Kastani Beach are on Skopelos, not Skiathos.
Damouchari, Pelion: the “Dancing Queen” location
The village of Damouchari lies on the eastern coast of the Pelion peninsula on the Greek mainland. It supplied the harbor and coastal setting for the “Dancing Queen” sequence.
According to the regional tourism authority, filming lasted three days and involved approximately 300 people. Damouchari’s small harbor, adjoining bays and coastal paths can still be explored, but the temporary production dressing and arrangements seen in the movie were not permanent.

Pinewood Studios: the real home of Villa Donna
Much of Mamma Mia! was filmed at Pinewood Studios in Iver Heath, Buckinghamshire. The production built the complete Villa Donna hotel complex on the Albert R. Broccoli 007 Stage.

The soundstage set included:
- the hotel’s exterior areas;
- interior rooms and corridors;
- courtyards and landscaping;
- controlled spaces for musical numbers and scenes that did not require a visible Greek landscape.
The filmmakers used substantial real vegetation, including mature trees, to make the studio environment appear Mediterranean. That effort helped create the illusion that the hotel, its terraces and its grounds occupied the same island as the chapel and beaches.
There is no Greek Villa Donna operating as a hotel or visitor attraction. Searches for the “real Villa Donna” can be misleading: the fictional hotel was a studio construction, not an existing property on Skopelos.

London as Sam’s New York office
Sam’s office is presented as being in New York, but the office scenes were filmed at the Lloyd’s building on Lime Street in the City of London. This is one of the film’s deliberate location substitutions. The setting represents Manhattan on screen while the actual building is unmistakably in London for location researchers.
Other brief or supplementary locations
Location databases also identify short or supplementary material from Djemaa el-Fna in Marrakech, Laguna Beach in California, Volos and other mainland Greek locations, as well as additional London sites. These appearances are less important to a Greece-focused itinerary than Skopelos, Skiathos and Damouchari.
They should be treated as brief supporting locations, not as the principal setting of the film.

How to plan a Mamma Mia! location trip
A practical itinerary needs separate stops:
- Base yourself on Skopelos for the chapel, Kastani Beach, Glysteri Beach, Cape Amarantos and Skopelos Town. Allow at least one full day, and more if you want time at the beaches rather than a rushed checklist.
- Include Skiathos for the Old Port. It can be visited independently or used as the arrival point for a Skopelos journey.
- Plan Damouchari separately if the “Dancing Queen” sequence is a priority. It is on the mainland Pelion peninsula, not on either island.
- Check transport seasonally. Ferry connections, excursions and road conditions can change, particularly outside the main summer period.
The movie’s editing makes these places feel close together. In reality, the locations are divided between two islands, a mainland village and a British studio. Use the real geography—not Kalokairi’s fictional map—to estimate travel time.

The original film versus the sequel
This guide covers Mamma Mia! (2008). The 2018 sequel, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, used different principal locations, notably the Croatian island of Vis. Vis should not be substituted for the Greek locations when researching the original film.
FAQ
Was Mamma Mia! filmed on one Greek island?
No. The film combines outdoor locations on Skopelos and Skiathos with Damouchari on mainland Pelion. Villa Donna and most interiors were filmed at Pinewood Studios in England.
Can you visit the Mamma Mia! wedding chapel?
Yes. Agios Ioannis Kastri near Glossa on Skopelos is the chapel used for the wedding exterior and procession. Visitors must climb approximately 106 exposed stone steps, and interior access may vary.
Does Villa Donna really exist?
No. Villa Donna was built as a studio set at Pinewood Studios in Buckinghamshire. Glysteri Beach on Skopelos supplied associated coastal scenery, but there is no Greek hotel to visit.

The harbor and coastal material for “Dancing Queen” was filmed in Damouchari, a seaside village on mainland Pelion. It is not on Skopelos or Skiathos.
The Bottom Line
The most important Mamma Mia! locations are spread across Skopelos, Skiathos and mainland Pelion, while the film’s central hotel was created at Pinewood Studios. Visit Skopelos for the chapel and beaches, Skiathos for the arrival harbor, and Damouchari for “Dancing Queen”—but do not expect to find the original beach set or a real Villa Donna.
