Costa Rica’s Judicial Investigation Police (OIJ) reportedly classified Malcolm-Jamal Warner’s death as accidental and identified the cause as asfixia por sumersión—asphyxia by submersion, commonly described in English as drowning. News reports separately said a current carried or pulled him into deeper water at Playa Cocles. The current account describes the reported circumstances; it is not a separate technical finding from the autopsy.
What the reported autopsy concluded
CR Hoy and Teletica reported on July 22, 2025, that the OIJ’s completed autopsy determined Warner died accidentally from “asfixia por sumersión” (“asphyxia by submersion”). The reports do not reproduce the complete autopsy document, so the conclusion should be attributed to Costa Rican authorities as reported by those outlets.
No competing medical cause of death appears in the reports described here. The official finding and the media accounts about conditions in the water are separate pieces of information.

What was reported about the current
The Associated Press reported that a current pulled Warner deeper while he was swimming. ABC News, citing police, described him as caught by a rip current, while Teletica reported that he was dragged by a current. Those accounts do not establish an exact current speed, strength, route or technical classification beyond what the outlets reported.

Accordingly, “caught in a high current” is a shorthand for the reported circumstances, not wording supplied by the autopsy finding. The documented cause was asphyxia by submersion and the reported manner was accidental.
When and where the incident happened
The reports place the incident on Sunday, July 20, 2025, at Playa Cocles in Limón Province on Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast. The Associated Press described it as a Sunday-afternoon water incident.

What rescuers reported
CR Hoy quoted Wagner Leiva, director of Emergency Response for the Costa Rican Red Cross, as saying three units responded and found two men. One was taken in critical condition to a medical center in Home Creek; the other had no vital signs despite rescue efforts.
