What comes in the Beginner Box?
The Beginner Box is the most directly supported choice for someone who wants a guided first game rather than a randomized booster. Its ten themed half-decks each contain 20 cards. Two are tutorial decks designed to play against one another, and the box also includes five non-foil tokens, two gameboard playmats and two How to Play guides. Wizards’ collecting guide lists the contents.
What do the TLA and TLE set codes mean?
TLA is the main set code; TLE identifies the eternal-legal set. Wizards’ collecting guide says TLA is legal in all formats. TLE cards are legal in Commander, Legacy and Vintage; an individual TLE card is also legal in any format where that card was already available. Because format legality can change and depends on the card, check the current format rules for a specific deck or event. Play Boosters can contain cards from both codes. The collecting guide explains the codes and legality.

- Contents: 7 Commons (In 1 out of every 26 Play Boosters, a common is replaced with a TLE card.) 3 Uncommons 1 Wildcard of any rarity 1 Rare or mythic rare 1 Traditional foil card of any rarity 1 Land card 1 Non-foil DFC helper card or double-sided token
How does firebending work?
Firebending rewards attacking with a creature that has the mechanic: when it attacks, its controller adds red mana equal to that creature’s firebending amount. Wizards mechanics author Matt Tabak summarizes the trigger as: “Whenever a creature you control with firebending attacks, you add that much red mana.” The mana is not lost during that combat. The mechanic is explained in Wizards’ Avatar mechanics article.
