Macaulay Culkin has said he would be open to returning as Kevin McCallister in a new Home Alone film, but only if the story is “just right.” He has also described a specific idea: Kevin as a stressed, distracted parent who gets locked out of his own house by his son, who sets traps for him. As of the late-November 2025 reporting, this is a conditional pitch, not an announced film.
What Culkin pitched
The comments came during a stop on Culkin’s “A Nostalgic Night with Macaulay Culkin” tour. Variety reported them on November 26, 2025, and the quotes below are Variety’s wording of what Culkin told the audience. Variety did not publish a full transcript, so read them as reported speech rather than verbatim recording.
The premise, in his words
Culkin said: “I kind of had this idea.” He then laid out the setup:
- Kevin is “either a widower or a divorcee” who is raising a kid while working hard.
- He is “not really paying enough attention,” and his son is “kind of getting miffed” at him.
- Kevin gets locked out, and the son “won’t let me in” and is “the one setting traps for me.”
He also framed the house as a symbol: “the house is some sort of metaphor for our relationship.” Asked to sum it up, he called it “the closest elevator pitch that I have,” adding that he was “not completely allergic to it.” On whether he would return at all, his condition was simple: “It would have to be just right.”

How the pitch reverses the original
The first film is built on a home invasion. Kevin, left behind by his family, defends the house against burglars. Culkin’s version flips the roles:

Is a Home Alone sequel confirmed?
No. The reporting describes an idea Culkin shared on stage and his openness to it under certain conditions. It does not say a script exists, that a studio has committed, or that a production or release date has been set. Nothing in the coverage establishes a greenlight.
Because the reporting is from November 2025, it cannot tell you what has happened since. Before treating any new development as settled, check for an official studio or distributor announcement rather than relying on a tour comment or a secondary report.

The franchise Culkin is talking about
Variety names the core films Culkin is associated with as Home Alone (1990) and Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (1992). Its context also includes later entries: a 2002 television movie, and Home Sweet Home Alone (2021). Variety’s report calls the 2002 television film “Home Alone 3.” Common franchise listings number it Home Alone 4: Taking Back the House, and Home Alone 3 (1997) is a separate theatrical film without Culkin. If you are comparing entries, check the title and year against a primary listing.
Chris Columbus’s objection
Chris Columbus directed the first two films. Variety reports that he has argued the franchise should be left alone, describing the originals as a special moment that could not be recaptured. That is Columbus’s view as reported by Variety. It is not a studio decision about Culkin’s pitch, and it does not settle whether a new film will be made.

Box-office figures in the coverage
Variety cites the first film’s worldwide box-office gross as $476 million and describes it as the second-highest-grossing film of 1990. These are Variety’s figures. The report does not name the data source, so treat them as reported numbers rather than independently verified original data.
What to take from it
Culkin has a concrete, emotionally specific idea and has said he would consider it, but the story is still a hypothetical. If you are looking for news on a Culkin-led Home Alone film, the only confirmed facts are the pitch itself, his conditions for returning, and Columbus’s stated opposition to revisiting the first two films.
