Macaulay Culkin’s case is that Die Hard happens at Christmas, but its story could work on another holiday. He told Mythical Kitchen’s Last Meals series that the film “is based around Christmas,” yet “if it was also St. Patrick’s Day, it would work.” That is a useful way to frame the debate, not an objective ruling: the movie’s setting is Christmas, while whether that makes it a Christmas movie depends on what you think the label means.
What did Macaulay Culkin say about Die Hard?
In a December 2025 interview for Mythical Kitchen’s Last Meals YouTube series, Culkin was asked whether Die Hard is a Christmas movie. The Independent reported his answer: “No, it’s not. It’s based around Christmas.” He elaborated: “Don’t fight me. It’s based around Christmas, but if it was also St. Patrick’s Day, it would work.”
He contrasted it with his own holiday classic: “But you couldn’t do, like, Memorial Day Home Alone, no.” He then joked, “Look, I’m kind of the godfather of Christmas nowadays, so yes, my opinion has some sway in this.” These quotations are as The Independent reported them from the interview.
Why does his St. Patrick’s Day test make sense?
Culkin’s argument is about how essential Christmas is to the story. If a film’s plot would remain basically intact after swapping its holiday backdrop, then Christmas may be setting rather than the story’s defining ingredient. In his example, he can imagine Die Hard working on St. Patrick’s Day; he cannot imagine Home Alone working the same way on Memorial Day.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That distinction is a reasonable test, but it is not the only possible one. A movie can be closely associated with Christmas because of its atmosphere, traditions, or the way people choose to watch it, even if the central plot could be relocated. Culkin’s point is strongest as a challenge to treating a Christmas setting as sufficient proof—not as a rule that everyone has to adopt.
Christmas is part of Die Hard’s actual premise
20th Century Studios’ official synopsis describes the film as a story about “A New York City cop [who] faces overwhelming odds when his Christmas visit to California is interrupted by a terrorist invasion of his estranged wife’s office building.” Christmas is not an incidental detail in that description: the visit provides the occasion for the protagonist to be in California and at the building.

The studio lists the film’s genre as action/adventure, rather than Christmas movie. That is a formal genre classification, not a verdict on its holiday identity. The studio page gives a runtime of 2 hours 12 minutes and a U.S. release date of July 15, 1988.
What did director John McTiernan say?
Director John McTiernan’s later view offers a different way to answer the question. The Independent quoted him from an American Film Institute video: “We hadn’t intended it to be a Christmas movie, but the joy that came from it is what turned it into a Christmas movie.” AFI’s December 2020 Movie Club page describes Die Hard as an enduring Christmas classic.

McTiernan’s reported perspective is about the film’s identity as audiences embraced it, rather than whether the plot could be transplanted to another holiday. That leaves room for both positions: Culkin focuses on whether Christmas is indispensable to the story, while McTiernan’s comment recognizes the meaning a film can acquire through its reception.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. So, is Die Hard a Christmas movie?
Factually, it is set during a Christmas visit, as the studio synopsis states. Whether it qualifies as a Christmas movie is a matter of definition. If you require Christmas to be essential to the plot, Culkin’s St. Patrick’s Day comparison gives you a reason to say no. If a Christmas setting and the film’s audience-shaped holiday identity are enough, McTiernan’s view supports calling it one.

The debate persists because people are answering slightly different questions: what kind of story the film is, what role Christmas plays in it, and what makes a movie part of the holiday season. Culkin makes a persuasive case for separating a Christmas backdrop from a Christmas-dependent plot; he does not settle the broader cultural question.
