If dropped frames are rising, check connection stability and upload capacity instead. These symptoms point to different problems, and a bitrate change alone will not fix an overloaded encoder.
Identify the OBS problem before changing settings
Check OBS’s performance indicators or statistics while the problem is happening. The exact label and location can vary by OBS version, but distinguish encoding or rendering lag from dropped frames.

OBS says dropped frames generally indicate a connection issue between the computer and the remote ingest server, rather than an OBS performance problem. Conversely, changing network settings will not resolve genuine encoding or rendering overload. Diagnose the counter that is actually increasing before making changes. Reduce OBS’s encoding and rendering workload
Lower output resolution
If the stream does not need its current resolution, reduce the output resolution first. A 720p output can be a sensible troubleshooting test when 1080p is failing, though the right choice depends on the documentary’s visual detail and your viewers’ needs. Resolution affects encoder workload; test the actual scene and stream rather than assuming a setting will work based on the Mac mini model alone.

Try 30 fps instead of 60 fps
If the stream is set to 60 fps and OBS reports performance strain, try 30 fps. OBS notes that frame rate affects both rendering and encoding performance. For a documentary stream dominated by interviews, narration, or archival footage, 30 fps may be an acceptable trade-off; motion-heavy material may benefit more from 60 fps if the system can sustain it.
Simplify the scene OBS has to composite
- Disable browser sources that are not essential to the live scene, or replace them with a static image or media source when that serves the same purpose.
- Remove or reduce filters that are not needed.
- Keep only necessary sources active in the scene being streamed.
Browser sources and filters can consume significant resources, so simplifying them can help when rendering—not network throughput—is the bottleneck. See OBS’s performance troubleshooting recommendations.

Check competing GPU use on macOS
Open Activity Monitor and look for applications using substantial GPU resources while OBS is live. Close only apps you recognize and opened; do not force-quit unfamiliar processes. OBS recommends Activity Monitor as a way to identify competing GPU use. OBS performance troubleshooting.
Choose an encoder compatible with your Mac mini
In OBS’s output settings, inspect the streaming encoder options available on your Mac. Hardware encoding can reduce CPU load when supported, but compatibility does not guarantee that a particular resolution, frame rate, and scene will run smoothly.

- Apple silicon Mac mini: OBS documents Apple VideoToolbox H.264 streaming support. It is a hardware-encoding option to test if it appears in your OBS version.
- Intel Mac mini: OBS says VideoToolbox streaming is unsupported on Intel Macs because it lacks the constant-bitrate support required by most streaming services. Use x264 for streaming, following OBS’s guidance.
Encoder names and availability may depend on the device and OBS version. Check the options actually shown in your installation rather than assuming every Mac mini has the same choices. See OBS’s hardware encoding guidance.
Set YouTube bitrate, keyframes, and network headroom
For YouTube Live using RTMP or RTMPS, YouTube supports H.264, H.265, and AV1, up to 60 fps; its guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds. The figures below are YouTube’s H.264 recommended ingest bitrates, not a universal setting for other codecs or every stream. YouTube’s live encoder settings include recommendations by codec, resolution, and frame rate.

If the Mac is struggling, moving to a lower resolution or frame rate can reduce both encoding work and the bitrate needed for the stream. Choose a bitrate that your connection can sustain steadily; a high upload speed reading from a single moment is not proof of stable capacity throughout a live session.
YouTube recommends upload bandwidth 20% above the total stream bitrate. If you use primary and backup streams, account for both when calculating the total. This headroom helps with network reliability; it does not reduce OBS’s encoding or rendering workload. See YouTube’s encoder guidance and its recommended bitrate information.

Change the base canvas only if other fixes fail
Do not start by reducing the base canvas. OBS generally does not recommend it because doing so can complicate source layout; it reserves that measure for systems severely constrained by GPU resources. Try output resolution, frame rate, and scene simplification first. OBS performance troubleshooting.
Test the revised stream before relying on it
- Make one change at a time—such as output resolution, frame rate, encoder, or scene complexity—so you can identify which change affects the symptom.
- Run the same scene and stream settings you intend to use live, and watch whether encoding or rendering lag or dropped frames continue to increase.
- If dropped frames persist, assess connection stability and whether the bitrate is sustainable with YouTube’s recommended bandwidth headroom.
- If overload persists, reduce workload further and test again. OBS settings are a troubleshooting process, not a guarantee for every Mac mini configuration.
OBS warns that compatible hardware alone does not establish that a particular streaming workload will perform well; encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity all matter.
