There is no official universal RAM or storage minimum for running a 24/7 YouTube stream from a Mac mini. YouTube specifies encoder and stream settings, while OBS says performance depends on the encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity. Choose memory for the workload you will run alongside OBS; choose storage based mainly on whether you will record streams or keep source media locally.
Apple’s current 2026 Mac mini lineup starts at 16GB of unified memory and a 256GB SSD on the M6 tier, but those are available configurations—not YouTube requirements. The 2024 M4 Mac mini also starts at 16GB and 256GB. Neither configuration is established by Apple, YouTube or OBS as a tested 24/7 setup.
How much RAM do you need?
No reviewed Apple, YouTube or OBS guidance sets a minimum amount of RAM for 24/7 YouTube streaming. The right capacity depends on the complete workload, not just the fact that the stream runs continuously. OBS cautions that compatibility with its system requirements does not guarantee that a computer can stream or record a particular workload; CPU needs vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity. OBS System Requirements
When a base memory configuration may be enough
A relatively simple OBS scene with few sources and no demanding concurrent tasks is a lighter workload than a scene with animated elements, browser overlays, capture devices, local recording, editing software or many other open apps. Apple’s current M6 Mac mini starts with 16GB of unified memory, and the 2024 M4 model also starts at 16GB. Those figures describe Apple’s configurations; they are not promises that every scene will run smoothly at that capacity.

When to consider more memory
More memory is a headroom choice if you expect OBS to share the Mac with complex scenes, browser sources, recording, editing or other memory-intensive apps. Apple lists 24GB and 32GB options for the M6 tier; M5 Pro configurations start at 24GB and extend to 48GB or 64GB. For the 2024 models, M4 can be configured with 24GB or 32GB, while M4 Pro starts at 24GB. A larger configuration does not establish continuous-stream reliability, and an external SSD cannot add unified memory.
How much storage do you need?
Sending a live stream to YouTube does not, by itself, establish a required amount of internal SSD space. YouTube’s encoder guidance covers the outgoing stream, not a local disk-capacity minimum. If you are not retaining local recordings or large media libraries on the Mac, do not treat a bigger SSD as a streaming prerequisite. YouTube’s live encoder settings

If you record or keep source files locally
Estimate recording space from the bitrate and duration you actually use, then leave room for macOS, apps and other media. The needed capacity changes with recording settings, how many hours you retain, and whether you keep original source files. Since these choices vary, there is no single useful storage figure for every creator. An external SSD can be considered for a local recording or media-retention workflow, but it is not necessary simply to send a live stream.
Apple’s current M6 tier starts with a 256GB SSD and can be configured to 512GB, 1TB or 2TB. M5 Pro starts at 512GB and offers configurations up to 8TB. On the 2024 lineup, M4 starts at 256GB with larger options, while M4 Pro starts at 512GB. These are product capacities, not YouTube storage requirements. Mac mini configurations to consider
Apple’s current 2026 specifications describe M6 and M5 Pro models. The 2024 M4 and M4 Pro specifications are relevant if you are buying or already own that generation; do not assume its base configuration matches the current lineup.
| Mac mini tier | Unified memory listed by Apple | SSD capacity listed by Apple | How to interpret it for streaming |
|---|---|---|---|
| M6 (current 2026 lineup) | 16GB base; configurable to 24GB or 32GB | 256GB base; configurable to 512GB, 1TB or 2TB | Starting point for a simple workload; choose additional capacity for the apps and local files you expect to use. |
| M5 Pro (current 2026 lineup) | 24GB base; configurations to 48GB or 64GB | 512GB base; configurations up to 8TB | Offers higher listed memory and storage configurations; Apple does not specify these as necessary for streaming. |
| M4 (2024 lineup) | 16GB base; configurable to 24GB or 32GB | 256GB base with larger options | Use the 2024 model’s own specifications when assessing an existing or used Mac mini. |
| M4 Pro (2024 lineup) | 24GB base | 512GB base with larger options | Apple lists higher starting capacities than for the 2024 M4 tier; no 24/7 performance guarantee is established. |
Apple lists hardware-accelerated video encoding capabilities for these generations. OBS documents VideoToolbox hardware encoding on Apple Silicon and H.264 streaming support. That establishes software support for the encoding path, not proven sustained performance for a particular stream, scene or duration. OBS Hardware Encoding

Set the stream profile before judging the Mac
The resolution, frame rate, codec and scene you choose affect encoding and network demands. YouTube’s recommendations are stream-output guidance, not RAM specifications. For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube specifies constant bitrate (CBR), recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. It supports up to 60 fps. For H.264, its examples include 14 Mbps for 1080p30 and 17 Mbps for 1080p60. These are YouTube’s recommended ingestion bitrates for those profiles, not measurements of memory use. YouTube encoder settings
- Choose a resolution and frame rate appropriate to the source video and audience; do not assume higher settings are automatically better.
- Set the encoder to a YouTube-supported codec and use CBR for RTMP/RTMPS.
- Use YouTube’s recommended two-second keyframe interval, staying at or below four seconds.
- Test with representative audio and motion, then monitor stream health during the broadcast.
Can a Mac mini run OBS 24/7?
OBS lists Intel or Apple Silicon CPUs and macOS 11 or later among its macOS requirements, but explicitly warns that meeting basic requirements does not guarantee streaming or recording capability. The sources cited here do not establish an Apple or OBS guarantee that a specific Mac mini configuration will remain online continuously, nor do they document a configuration tested for a full 24/7 workload. Treat continuous operation as a workload to validate, not an assurance implied by the model name or memory capacity.

Validate your actual setup
- Build the OBS scene you intend to use, including browser overlays, capture devices, audio processing and any local recording.
- Set the intended codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate and keyframe interval. Use YouTube’s published settings for the selected profile.
- Run a representative test with the same sources and audio activity expected during the real stream.
- Check OBS and YouTube stream health for dropped frames, encoding problems and network issues; YouTube recommends testing before the stream and monitoring it while live.
- Plan for network stability, power continuity and recovery after a restart or interruption. A test cannot guarantee uninterrupted future operation.
