Lover, Stalker, Killer is a Netflix feature documentary about Dave Kroupa, Cari Farver and Shanna “Liz” Golyar, whose online communications became central to a murder case. Directed by Sam Hobkinson and produced by Curious Films, the film uses interviews and reenactments to tell the story. The Nebraska Supreme Court’s 2018 opinion provides the legal account: Farver disappeared in 2012, her body has never been found, and the court affirmed Golyar’s murder and arson convictions.
What is Lover, Stalker, Killer about?
Netflix describes the film as a feature documentary following Kroupa’s attempt to date after the end of a long relationship. He connected with Golyar and Farver, and the encounters developed into what Netflix’s synopsis calls a “twisted love triangle.” The film combines interviews with people involved in the case, including law-enforcement officers, and reenactments. Netflix credits Curious Films as producer and Sam Hobkinson as director. Netflix Media Center’s film page describes it as a story of harassment, digital deception and murder.
That is the film’s framing, not a substitute for the court record. Reenactments are a storytelling device; they should not be treated as independent evidence of what happened.
Who were Dave Kroupa, Cari Farver and Shanna “Liz” Golyar?
Netflix’s Tudum case explainer says Kroupa moved to Omaha in 2012 and began dating online. He met Golyar and later encountered Farver when she brought her car to his auto shop. In Netflix’s account, director Hobkinson described the case as a “complete web of falsehood.” That phrase is his characterization, not a finding by the court.

The Nebraska Supreme Court identifies the defendant as Shanna E. Golyar; Netflix’s coverage also uses the name Liz. The court’s opinion describes Golyar as having considered Farver a romantic rival. It recounts that Golyar impersonated Farver and other people in emails, text messages and social media activity over several years, and that, while posing as someone else, she sent emails confessing to Farver’s murder.
What happened to Cari Farver, and what did the court decide?
The Nebraska Supreme Court’s opinion states that Farver disappeared on November 13, 2012, and that her body has never been found. The court’s account of the case and its decision are set out in the published 2018 appellate opinion.

Golyar was found guilty of first-degree murder and second-degree arson. The sentence was life imprisonment for murder, plus a consecutive term of 18 to 20 years for arson. On November 9, 2018, the Nebraska Supreme Court affirmed the convictions and sentences after reviewing Golyar’s appeal.
How to separate the documentary from the court record
- For the film’s approach: Netflix’s Media Center describes its interviews, reenactments, director and production company.
- For the case narrative and legal result: the Nebraska Supreme Court opinion recounts the evidence considered on appeal and affirms the convictions and sentences.
- For the phrase “complete web of falsehood”: Netflix Tudum attributes it to Hobkinson; it is not a judicial finding.
The film offers a documentary narrative shaped through interviews and reconstruction. The appellate opinion establishes what the court decided; it does not verify every scene, edit or interpretation in the film.
