Look out! The 17 best horror movies on Netflix right now

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For the best overall horror movie on Netflix US, watch His House. It is frightening, beautifully made, and emotionally substantial, using supernatural horror to explore displacement, guilt, grief, and the refugee experience. If you want immediate scares instead of a slow burn, choose Host; for zombies, choose Train to Busan; and for a classic crowd-pleasing slasher, press play on Scream.

This is a US-specific list of feature films, with availability checked on August 10, 2026. Netflix libraries vary by country and change regularly, so a film listed here may not appear in every region or on every plan. Check the title in your own Netflix app before settling in.

Last checked: August 10, 2026. Titles, ratings, audio options, and availability can change. This list is an editorial ranking of the best horror experiences currently streaming on Netflix US—not a permanent Netflix category or an objective measure of scariness.

Choose in seconds

If you want… Watch… What to expect
The best overall His House Social, psychological, and supernatural horror
The scariest immediate watch Host Fast, compact séance horror with frequent scares
A supernatural slow burn Under the Shadow Atmosphere, wartime anxiety, and creeping dread
A patient folk-horror film The Witch Religious paranoia and bleak historical horror
Zombies Train to Busan Fast infected, action, emotion, and social commentary
A classic slasher Scream Mystery, suspense, kills, and self-aware humor
Found footage Creep Uncomfortable, intimate psychological manipulation
Wilderness folk horror The Ritual Guilt, an ominous forest, and creature horror
Gothic spectacle Frankenstein Del Toro-style tragedy, monsters, and lavish design
A creature-feature and sci-fi hybrid Nope Mystery, spectacle, alien horror, and ideas about exploitation
A group movie night Train to Busan or Scream Accessible, propulsive films with plenty to discuss afterward

How these 17 films were chosen

The ranking prioritizes current Netflix US availability, filmmaking quality, genuine horror effectiveness, originality, and variety. It includes films from different countries and decades, along with supernatural horror, folk horror, slashers, zombies, psychological horror, survival thrillers, Gothic stories, and horror hybrids.

Netflix’s US scary-movies collection, official title pages and Netflix Tudum’s horror guide were used for title and catalog checks. The current Rotten Tomatoes Netflix horror browse and the independent Time Out Netflix horror guide provided additional critical and availability cross-checks. Rotten Tomatoes scores are live figures and can change, so they are signals of reception rather than a fixed ranking.

Editorial weighting: current Netflix US availability, 25%; overall filmmaking, 20%; horror effectiveness, 20%; distinctiveness or genre importance, 15%; variety, 10%; and ease of recommendation, 10%. “Best” and “scariest” are not the same thing: a slow, unsettling film can be more accomplished than a jump-scare machine, while a movie with broad appeal may be a better choice for a group.

The number 17 is an editorial count, not an official Netflix fact. The identifiable Entertainment Weekly feature syndicated by Yahoo had expanded to 18 films by January 24, 2026. This version keeps the requested 17-film format and contains feature films only, not horror television series.

The 17 best horror movies on Netflix

  1. His House (2020)

    • Best for: The best overall pick; viewers who want social and psychological horror
    • Why watch: A couple who have fled their homeland try to begin again in an English town, but their new home contains a terror that cannot be separated from their memories, grief, guilt, and displacement. The haunted-house framework is familiar; the emotional and political weight is not. His House is frightening without treating its characters’ trauma as decoration.
    • Fear type: Haunted house, supernatural, psychological, social horror
    • Intensity: High; sustained dread with disturbing imagery
    • Content notes: Refugee trauma, grief, violence, death, displacement, and disturbing supernatural imagery
    • Language: English-led
    • Netflix status: Streaming on Netflix US as checked August 10, 2026; Time Out includes it in its current Netflix horror recommendations
    • If you like this: Try Under the Shadow for another supernatural film in which personal and political terror overlap.
  2. Under the Shadow (2016)

    • Best for: A supernatural slow burn
    • Why watch: Set in Tehran during the Iran-Iraq War, this atmospheric film follows a mother and daughter whose home becomes increasingly unsafe. Air raids, political repression, motherhood, cultural mythology, and supernatural dread reinforce one another. It is more interested in accumulating anxiety than delivering a constant stream of jump scares.
    • Fear type: Supernatural, wartime, domestic, atmospheric horror
    • Intensity: Medium-high; patient but deeply oppressive
    • Content notes: War, bombings, child peril, death, and frightening supernatural images
    • Language: Persian and English elements; subtitles may be needed
    • Netflix status: Streaming on Netflix US as checked August 10, 2026; see Netflix’s title page
    • If you like this: Choose Veronica for another haunted domestic setting centered on a young family.
  3. Host (2020)

    • Best for: Immediate scares in a short, intense film
    • Why watch: Friends organize a séance over a video call and quickly discover that the screen separating them from one another may not protect them from what they have summoned. The film turns webcams, chat windows, frozen images, and awkward online behavior into a tightly controlled scare machine. It wastes almost no time.
    • Fear type: Supernatural, séance, found footage, home-invasion-style horror
    • Intensity: High; frequent scares and escalating danger
    • Content notes: Death, demonic or supernatural threat, self-harm references, and frightening imagery
    • Language: English
    • Netflix status: Streaming on Netflix US as checked August 10, 2026; Netflix describes the virtual séance premise
    • If you like this: Follow it with Creep for another compact film that makes a restricted format feel alarmingly intimate.
  4. The Witch (2015)

    • Best for: Slow-burn folk horror and historical atmosphere
    • Why watch: Robert Eggers’ bleak debut places a deeply religious family on the edge of colonial New England, where suspicion and supernatural evil begin to fracture the household. Its period language, austere setting, and patient pace are part of the experience. This is not the right choice if you want nonstop action, but it is an excellent choice for dread that lingers.
    • Fear type: Folk horror, supernatural, historical, psychological horror
    • Intensity: Medium-high; slow, bleak, and unsettling rather than relentlessly loud
    • Content notes: Religious extremism, family breakdown, death, child-related peril, animal distress, and disturbing imagery
    • Language: English
    • Netflix status: Streaming on Netflix US as checked August 10, 2026; Netflix labels it critically acclaimed
    • If you like this: Try Apostle for another period-set story about faith, isolation, and a dangerous religious community.
  5. Gerald’s Game (2017)

    • Best for: Psychological survival horror
    • Why watch: Mike Flanagan’s adaptation of Stephen King turns a confined premise into a story about survival, memory, abuse, and the mind’s effort to process trauma. Carla Gugino carries much of the film through an emotionally demanding performance, while the horror constantly shifts between external danger and psychological breakdown.
    • Fear type: Psychological, survival, confinement, trauma horror
    • Intensity: High; psychologically difficult and occasionally graphic
    • Content notes: Sexual abuse, domestic abuse, trauma, bodily injury, death, and disturbing imagery
    • Language: English
    • Netflix status: Streaming on Netflix US as checked August 10, 2026; Netflix lists it as psychological horror based on a book
    • If you like this: Watch Creep for another film built more around discomfort and manipulation than conventional monsters.
  6. Creep (2014)

    • Best for: Found footage, social discomfort, and predatory unease
    • Why watch: A videographer accepts a job from an apparently eccentric client and spends the day trying to determine whether the assignment is merely strange or genuinely dangerous. The film’s two-person structure makes every pause, inappropriate question, and forced smile feel threatening. It is brief enough for a late-night watch but uncomfortable enough to stay with you.
    • Fear type: Found footage, psychological, serial-predator horror
    • Intensity: Medium-high; more awkward and disturbing than gory
    • Content notes: Predatory manipulation, stalking, threats, death, and intense social discomfort
    • Language: English
    • Netflix status: Streaming on Netflix US as checked August 10, 2026; Netflix describes the videographer-client setup
    • If you like this: Try Host for another tightly contained horror film that turns an everyday communication format into a trap.
  7. Green Room (2015)

    • Best for: Brutal survival horror with thriller pacing
    • Why watch: After witnessing a crime at an isolated club, a punk band becomes trapped and must survive against a violent extremist group. Jeremy Saulnier stages the danger with claustrophobic precision: injuries matter, escape routes are limited, and every attempt to negotiate can make the situation worse. It is best described as a horror-thriller rather than supernatural horror.
    • Fear type: Survival, siege, thriller, realistic horror
    • Intensity: Very high; graphic and relentlessly violent
    • Content notes: Graphic violence, severe injuries, murder, weapons, extremist ideology, and gore
    • Language: English
    • Netflix status: Streaming on Netflix US as checked August 10, 2026; Netflix describes it as gory, violent, and critically acclaimed
    • If you like this: Choose 28 Years Later for another high-intensity survival film where ordinary people face organized, escalating brutality.
  8. Frankenstein (2025)

    • Best for: Gothic spectacle and tragic monster storytelling
    • Why watch: Guillermo del Toro’s adaptation approaches Mary Shelley’s creator-and-creature relationship as Gothic tragedy as much as horror. Expect elaborate visual design, emotional melodrama, and a strong interest in what a creator owes the being he brings into the world. It is a major current Netflix horror title, though its emphasis is atmosphere and feeling rather than nonstop terror.
    • Fear type: Gothic, monster, body horror, tragic horror
    • Intensity: Medium-high; visually dark and emotionally heavy
    • Content notes: Death, experimentation, bodily transformation, violence, grief, and disturbing imagery
    • Language: English
    • Netflix status: Streaming on Netflix US as checked August 10, 2026; Time Out covers del Toro’s current Netflix adaptation
    • If you like this: Watch Nope for another visually ambitious horror film that combines spectacle with larger questions about humanity and exploitation.
  9. Train to Busan (2016)

    • Best for: Zombies and an excellent group movie
    • Why watch: A father and daughter board a train just as a zombie outbreak spreads across South Korea. The confined setting creates constant forward momentum, but the film’s emotional stakes are just as important as its action: passengers must decide whom to trust, whom to help, and what survival means when panic turns people against one another.
    • Fear type: Zombie, action, survival, outbreak horror
    • Intensity: High; fast, violent, and suspenseful
    • Content notes: Death, blood, crowd panic, violence, child peril, and frightening infected attackers
    • Language: Korean; subtitles may be needed
    • Netflix status: Streaming on Netflix US as checked August 10, 2026; Time Out includes it in its current Netflix horror recommendations
    • If you like this: Move on to 28 Years Later for a harsher, more expansive infected-apocalypse experience.
  10. 28 Years Later (2025)

    • Best for: Modern infected-apocalypse horror
    • Why watch: Danny Boyle and Alex Garland return to the world established by 28 Days Later with a larger-scale film about infection, social collapse, and survival. It brings body horror and urgent physical danger, but it also has more ambitious thematic material than a simple chase movie. It is a strong choice when you want recent horror with scope.
    • Fear type: Infected, apocalypse, body horror, survival
    • Intensity: High; violent, tense, and disturbing
    • Content notes: Graphic violence, infection, death, societal collapse, and disturbing body horror
    • Language: English
    • Netflix status: Streaming on Netflix US as checked August 10, 2026; Time Out ranks it prominently in its 2026 Netflix horror guide
    • If you like this: Try Train to Busan for a faster, more character-driven zombie thriller.
  11. The Black Phone (2021)

    • Best for: Mainstream supernatural horror
    • Why watch: A kidnapped boy discovers that a disconnected telephone may allow him to hear from previous victims of his captor. The premise combines a kidnapping thriller with supernatural intervention, while Ethan Hawke’s masked villain gives the film its most immediate hook. It is accessible to casual horror viewers but still has a grim emotional core.
    • Fear type: Supernatural, kidnapping thriller, serial-killer horror
    • Intensity: Medium-high; tense and frightening without being as extreme as Green Room
    • Content notes: Child abduction, threat to children, bullying, violence, death, and abuse
    • Language: English
    • Netflix status: Streaming on Netflix US as checked August 10, 2026; Netflix Tudum describes the Grabber and the supernatural phone
    • If you like this: Choose Host for a more concentrated supernatural scare experience.
  12. Scream (1996)

    • Best for: A classic slasher and crowd-pleaser
    • Why watch: Wes Craven and Kevin Williamson reinvigorated the slasher by combining a masked killer mystery with sharp commentary on horror rules. It remains highly rewatchable because the suspense works even when you are enjoying the jokes and trying to identify the killer. Netflix added the first three Scream films to its US lineup in July 2026, making the original a natural starting point.
    • Fear type: Slasher, mystery, black comedy
    • Intensity: Medium-high; bloody but playful in tone
    • Content notes: Murder, stalking, violence, blood, and teen peril
    • Language: English
    • Netflix status: Streaming on Netflix US as checked August 10, 2026; Netflix’s US scary-movie collection includes it
    • If you like this: Continue with Fear Street Part 1: 1994 for a modern, glossy teen slasher.
  13. Fear Street Part 1: 1994 (2021)

    • Best for: Teen slasher fans and viewers new to horror franchises
    • Why watch: The first part of Netflix’s connected trilogy mixes teen drama, supernatural mythology, recognizable slasher traditions, and energetic set pieces. It is accessible without being toothless, and it gives viewers a clear reason to continue into the trilogy’s other periods. Watch the films in order: 1994, 1978, then 1666.
    • Fear type: Teen slasher, supernatural, mystery
    • Intensity: Medium-high; stylish, violent, and entertaining
    • Content notes: Murder, blood, teen peril, homophobia, violence, and supernatural threat
    • Language: English
    • Netflix status: Streaming on Netflix US as checked August 10, 2026; Netflix Tudum confirms the trilogy order and its R.L. Stine connection
    • If you like this: Follow it with Scream for the slasher tradition that helped shape modern self-aware horror.
  14. The Ritual (2017)

    • Best for: Wilderness and creature-driven folk horror
    • Why watch: Four friends hiking through an isolated forest become increasingly threatened by the landscape, their own guilt, and something that may not be natural. The film understands that a hostile environment can be frightening before the creature appears, then expands its folk-horror mythology without abandoning its survival-thriller tension.
    • Fear type: Folk horror, wilderness, creature, survival
    • Intensity: Medium-high; atmospheric with bursts of graphic violence
    • Content notes: Grief, guilt, death, violence, ritual imagery, and creature horror
    • Language: English
    • Netflix status: Streaming on Netflix US as checked August 10, 2026; see Netflix’s title page
    • If you like this: Try The Witch for slower, more historically grounded folk horror.
  15. Veronica (2017)

    • Best for: Possession horror in a pressured family home
    • Why watch: After a Ouija séance, a teenager struggles to protect herself and her younger siblings from a growing supernatural threat. The film draws much of its tension from domestic responsibility: there is no easy escape when the protagonist is also the person expected to care for everyone else.
    • Fear type: Possession, séance, supernatural, domestic horror
    • Intensity: High; oppressive and punctuated by sharp scares
    • Content notes: Child peril, possession, death, grief, religious imagery, and frightening supernatural events
    • Language: Spanish; subtitles may be needed
    • Netflix status: Streaming on Netflix US as checked August 10, 2026; Netflix Tudum describes the séance and subsequent haunting
    • If you like this: Watch Under the Shadow for another atmospheric, family-centered supernatural story.
  16. Apostle (2018)

    • Best for: Cult horror, period settings, and graphic practical effects
    • Why watch: A man infiltrates an isolated island community to rescue his kidnapped sister and discovers a religious society built on secrets and violence. The film combines period adventure, conspiratorial faith, folk horror, and brutal body horror. It is a good choice for viewers who enjoy the cult traditions associated with The Wicker Man and Midsommar.
    • Fear type: Cult, folk, period, body, and supernatural horror
    • Intensity: High; graphic and violent
    • Content notes: Torture, blood, religious extremism, bodily injury, violence, and disturbing imagery
    • Language: English
    • Netflix status: Streaming on Netflix US as checked August 10, 2026; Netflix Tudum describes the island-cult premise
    • If you like this: Try The Ritual for another film where an isolated community and ancient forces create the danger.
  17. Nope (2022)

    • Best for: Creature horror, sci-fi mystery, and horror with ideas
    • Why watch: Jordan Peele’s film follows siblings who run a California horse ranch and attempt to capture evidence of a strange phenomenon in the sky. Its pleasures include spectacle and mystery, but it is also concerned with exploitation, performance, spectatorship, and the urge to turn danger into entertainment. Think of it as a horror/sci-fi hybrid rather than a pure scare film.
    • Fear type: Creature feature, science fiction, spectacle, thematic horror
    • Intensity: Medium-high; suspenseful and occasionally shocking, with stretches of mystery
    • Content notes: Animal peril, death, mass-casualty imagery, spectacle-related trauma, and disturbing creature material
    • Language: English
    • Netflix status: Streaming on Netflix US as checked August 10, 2026; Netflix’s title data classifies it as science fiction, creature feature, and horror
    • If you like this: Choose Frankenstein for another visually ambitious horror film about spectacle, creation, and the consequences of looking.

Choose by the kind of fear you want

For immediate scares

Start with Host if you want the shortest route to supernatural danger. Veronica and The Black Phone also offer clear supernatural hooks and regular tension, although both contain child-related peril.

For slow-building dread

Pick Under the Shadow, The Witch, or His House. These films reward patience and use setting, history, family conflict, and implication to build fear. They are stronger choices for viewers who find atmosphere more frightening than loud jump scares.

For anxiety and discomfort

Creep is the choice for social unease and predatory manipulation. Gerald’s Game is more psychologically difficult, particularly because its horror is tied to abuse and trauma. Neither depends on a conventional monster to create distress.

For gore and survival action

Green Room is the most brutally realistic option here. Train to Busan delivers fast zombie action alongside emotional stakes, while 28 Years Later offers a larger, more modern infected-apocalypse experience.

For horror hybrids

Nope is the best fit for science fiction and creature-feature fans who want thematic depth. Frankenstein is a Gothic tragedy with horror elements and visual spectacle. Green Room sits between a siege thriller and realistic horror.

For viewers who prefer subtitles

The strongest non-English-language options are Train to Busan in Korean, Veronica in Spanish, and Under the Shadow, which uses Persian and English. Netflix audio and subtitle options can vary by country, title configuration, and profile language, so confirm them on the film’s title page.

Best Netflix horror movies for beginners

If you do not usually watch horror, start with a film that has a familiar structure and a strong entertainment hook:

  • Scream: A witty, suspenseful entry point to slasher movies.
  • The Black Phone: A straightforward kidnapping thriller with a supernatural turn.
  • Train to Busan: Accessible action, emotional stakes, and clear zombie rules.
  • Fear Street Part 1: 1994: A stylish teen horror film that opens into a trilogy.
  • Host: The best beginner choice if you are comfortable with supernatural horror and want a short, intense watch.

Save Gerald’s Game, The Witch, and Creep for later if you prefer to ease into horror. They are excellent films, but their psychological discomfort, pacing, or subject matter can be more demanding than a conventional slasher or monster movie.

Before you press play

Netflix availability is regional

This list applies to Netflix US. Netflix says its catalog varies by country and changes periodically because of regional licensing. Profile settings, language settings, VPN detection, and subscription plans can also affect what appears. Netflix may show a Last day to watch on Netflix notice on a title page or during playback when a film is scheduled to leave within the next month. See Netflix’s catalog explanation and its title-expiration guidance for details.

If you cannot find a listed movie

  1. Search Netflix using the exact title, including the year if necessary.
  2. Confirm that you are using the intended profile.
  3. Check the profile’s maturity rating and blocked-title settings.
  4. Disable any VPN or proxy and search again.
  5. Confirm the country Netflix is detecting.
  6. Look for a departure notice or a lock icon associated with your plan.

On mobile, Netflix’s current profile-control path is My Netflix → profile name → Manage Profiles → choose profile → Viewing Restrictions → Maturity Rating. In a web browser, go to Account → Profiles → Adjust parental controls → choose profile → verify identity → set maturity rating → Save. Profiles display only titles at or below their selected maturity level. Netflix explains these restrictions in its profile and maturity-rating help page.

If Netflix appears to think you are in the wrong country, Netflix recommends checking your connection with Fast.com and selecting Show more info to view the Client country. VPNs and proxies can cause titles to disappear; see Netflix’s country-detection guidance.

Ad-supported plans may have a different catalog

Some titles may be unavailable on Netflix’s ad-supported experience because of licensing restrictions. Netflix says unavailable titles can display a lock icon when you browse or search. Do not assume that every film on this list is available on every plan; check the title in your account. See Netflix’s ad-supported-plan information.

Content warnings matter

Several recommendations are more disturbing than their short descriptions suggest. His House deals with displacement and trauma; Gerald’s Game includes sexual abuse and psychological trauma; Green Room is graphically violent; The Black Phone centers on child abduction; and The Witch contains disturbing family and child-related material. These warnings are intentionally spoiler-free.

Are these Netflix originals?

No. The list mixes Netflix-produced or Netflix-distributed films with licensed movies that Netflix currently streams. A film appearing in a Netflix category does not mean Netflix produced it. For that reason, the entries use the more precise phrase streaming on Netflix US rather than labeling the entire list as Netflix originals.

FAQ

What is the best horror movie on Netflix right now?

His House is the best overall choice on this list because it combines effective supernatural horror with excellent writing, performances, atmosphere, and emotional depth. It is not necessarily the scariest film for every viewer. Choose Host if your priority is immediate scares, or Train to Busan if you want fast-moving zombie action.

What is the scariest horror movie on Netflix?

That depends on the type of fear that affects you. Host is the strongest choice for concentrated, immediate supernatural scares. Under the Shadow, The Witch, and His House are better for slow-building dread; Creep is more socially disturbing; and Green Room is the most graphically brutal and realistic.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which Netflix horror movie is best for beginners?

Start with Scream, The Black Phone, Train to Busan, or Fear Street Part 1: 1994. They have accessible premises and clear genre pleasures. Host is also a good introduction if supernatural horror does not bother you.

Which movie on this list is the shortest?

Host and Creep are the easiest choices when you want a compact late-night horror watch. Their impact comes from tight setups and escalating tension rather than extended world-building.

Which films are actually Netflix originals?

Not all of them. This is a mixed list of Netflix originals, Netflix-distributed films, and licensed titles. “Streaming on Netflix” describes current availability; it does not claim that Netflix produced a movie.

Are these horror movies available outside the United States?

Not necessarily. Netflix libraries differ by country and titles can leave or arrive at different times. The recommendations and availability statement here are specifically for Netflix US as checked August 10, 2026. Search the title in your local Netflix catalog before relying on the list.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I watch if I dislike gore?

Try Under the Shadow, His House, The Witch, Nope, or Host. They rely more heavily on atmosphere, psychology, mystery, or supernatural tension. Avoid Green Room, Apostle, and some of the zombie and slasher choices if graphic violence is a deal-breaker.

Is Veronica based on a true story?

It is loosely inspired by the reported death of an 18-year-old after a séance, as Netflix Tudum explains in its horror coverage. That does not verify the supernatural events depicted in the film or establish that the story happened as shown.

Why can’t I find one of these movies on Netflix?

The most likely explanations are regional availability, a title leaving soon, profile maturity restrictions, a blocked title, VPN or proxy detection, or an ad-supported-plan licensing restriction. Follow the troubleshooting steps above and check Netflix’s own title page or help center for your account and country.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the scariest horror movie on Netflix?

Host is the best pick for concentrated supernatural scares. For slow-building dread, try Under the Shadow or The Witch; for realistic, graphic violence, choose Green Room.

Which Netflix horror movie is best for beginners?

Start with Scream, The Black Phone, Train to Busan, or Fear Street Part 1: 1994. They offer accessible premises and familiar genre hooks.

Are all of these Netflix originals?

No. The list includes Netflix-produced or Netflix-distributed films as well as licensed movies that Netflix currently streams. A Netflix listing does not mean Netflix produced the film.

Are these movies available outside the US?

Not necessarily. Netflix catalogs vary by country and change with regional licensing. This list was checked for Netflix US on August 10, 2026.

What should I watch if I dislike gore?

Try Under the Shadow, His House, The Witch, Nope, or Host. Avoid Green Room, Apostle, and the more graphic zombie and slasher selections.

Is Veronica based on a true story?

It is loosely inspired by a reported séance-related death, but the supernatural events in the film have not been verified as depicted.

The Bottom Line

Start with His House for the best all-around horror film, Host for fast scares, Train to Busan for zombies, or Scream for a crowd-pleasing slasher. Just remember that this is a Netflix US snapshot from August 10, 2026: catalogs vary by country, plan, and date.
