Former NPR host David Greene has sued Google and Alphabet, alleging that the male AI voice used in NotebookLM’s Audio Overviews resembles his voice, delivery and persona and was used without permission. Google denies the allegation, saying the voice was based on a professional actor it hired. As of August 18, 2026, no court has found that Google copied Greene’s voice or trained NotebookLM on his recordings.
The case in brief

The filed complaint contains Greene’s allegations; they remain allegations rather than established findings.
Who is David Greene?
Greene is a longtime journalist and broadcaster who formerly hosted NPR’s Morning Edition. NPR reported that he hosted the program for eight years before leaving in 2020. He has also hosted or worked on programs including Up First, Left, Right & Center and podcast projects.

Greene argues that his voice is not merely an incidental feature of his work. He says it is closely associated with his professional identity, audience relationships and ability to earn money from broadcasting, podcasting and potential voice-licensing work. Those descriptions come from his legal filing and should be understood as his position in the case.

What NotebookLM does
Google NotebookLM lets users provide documents and other sources, then generates an AI-produced discussion of that material. Its Audio Overviews feature uses synthetic hosts to summarize and discuss the sources in an audio format.
The dispute concerns the male host voice used in those generated discussions. It does not necessarily concern every voice, output or feature in NotebookLM. Describing the result as a “podcast” can be misleading without noting that it is generated from user-provided material by an AI system rather than independently reported programming.
How Greene says he discovered the resemblance
According to Greene’s interview with NPR, he first heard about NotebookLM in fall 2024. Friends, colleagues and people in the audio industry contacted him to ask whether he had licensed his voice to Google.

That account describes what Greene and people around him heard. It is not independent proof that Google used his recordings or deliberately modeled the voice on him.

What Greene alleges in the complaint
Greene’s complaint alleges that Google used publicly available broadcasts and other recordings without authorization, created or refined an AI voice resembling him, and deployed that voice in NotebookLM’s Audio Overviews.
He further alleges that Google benefited from the association with his identity and reputation without paying him or obtaining a license. The complaint says the alleged use could compete with Greene’s own audio work and reduce future opportunities to license his voice or persona.
The filing pleads four causes of action:
- California statutory right of publicity under Civil Code section 3344;
- Unfair competition;
- Common-law right of publicity; and
- Unjust enrichment.
Greene seeks a jury trial. The complaint uses strong language, including references to stolen or unauthorized copies, but those are allegations made by the plaintiff—not findings adopted by a court.
What evidence is publicly described?
The central public evidence described in the complaint consists of reactions from personal and professional observers, Greene’s own comparison of the voice and mannerisms, and an analysis by an unnamed voice-forensics company.
According to the complaint’s forensic exhibit, several models produced similarity or confidence figures of approximately 53% to 60%. The filing says the vendor regarded results above 50% as relatively high on its proprietary scale, which it describes as ranging from –100% to 100%.

Those figures require caution:
- The vendor is not identified in the publicly available complaint materials described here.
- The methodology, reference samples, controls and independent validation are not established by the complaint alone.
- A proprietary similarity score is not the same as a finding that a recording was copied.
- The numbers do not prove that Greene’s recordings were included in Google’s training data.
- A resemblance can result from common broadcast delivery patterns, a naturally similar actor, model tuning or other causes.
Greene’s filing also describes comparisons with other NPR voices. He uses those comparisons to argue that the result was not simply a generic public-radio style. That remains an argument for the court to evaluate, not a resolved technical conclusion.

What Google says
Google has described Greene’s allegation as baseless. In the response reported by NPR, Google said the male NotebookLM voice was unrelated to Greene and was based on a professional actor whom Google hired.
That explanation raises factual questions that the publicly available sources do not answer. They include:
- Who the actor was and what rights were obtained;
- What instructions, reference material or performance direction the actor received;
- Whether the actor was asked to imitate Greene or a broader broadcast style;
- Whether Greene’s recordings were used during model development, testing or evaluation;
- What internal records Google has about the voice’s creation; and
- Whether Google has changed the voice, its default selection or its safeguards since the lawsuit.
The existence of a hired actor could support Google’s account, but it does not by itself resolve every question about model development or possible resemblance.
Why the July 2026 ruling matters
The case was originally filed in state court and was later removed to federal court. Google argued, in substance, that copyright law was sufficiently involved to support federal jurisdiction or preempt Greene’s claims.

A federal judge rejected Google’s copyright-based attempt to keep the case in federal court, according to Bloomberg Law. The reported ruling treated Greene’s claims as concerning the alleged commercial generation and use of his identity in NotebookLM’s output, rather than a conventional claim that a particular tangible copyrighted recording had been reproduced.
This distinction is important, but easy to overstate. The ruling did not establish that Google used Greene’s voice, that the output was legally his voice, or that Greene will win. It addressed jurisdiction and the copyright theory raised at that stage. It also does not make copyright irrelevant to AI voice disputes generally.

A copyright claim generally concerns protected creative expression, such as a specific recording or other work. A right-of-publicity claim concerns unauthorized commercial exploitation of a person’s identity, likeness or persona.
That means a person could argue that a synthetic voice appropriates their identity even if they cannot show that one particular audio file was copied verbatim. Conversely, a voice that sounds similar to someone does not automatically prove either unlawful imitation or inclusion of that person’s recordings in training data.

- Does the synthetic output sound sufficiently connected to Greene’s identity?
- Did Google use that identity commercially without consent?
- Were Greene’s recordings used to train, tune, test or otherwise develop the system?
- Was a copyrighted recording or other protected expression reproduced?
- What evidence connects the alleged resemblance to Google’s conduct?
“The AI sounds like Greene” and “Google trained the AI on Greene” are not equivalent statements. The first concerns perceived output similarity; the second concerns the system’s development history. The public record described in the dossier does not establish the second.
What remains unresolved
As of August 18, 2026, the publicly located sources do not establish a settlement, injunction, damages award or final merits judgment. Nor do they establish that a court has found Greene’s voice was copied or that NotebookLM was trained on his recordings.
The most important unresolved factual issues include:
- the identity and contractual role of the professional actor cited by Google;
- the source material used to create and tune the disputed voice;
- the vendor’s forensic methodology and validation;
- whether the voice was evaluated against Greene’s recordings before launch;
- whether users or listeners were likely to believe Greene endorsed or licensed the voice; and
- what commercial benefit, if any, Google received from the alleged association.
Why the lawsuit could matter beyond Greene
The dispute highlights a growing gap between traditional intellectual-property categories and synthetic media. Radio hosts, podcast presenters, audiobook narrators, actors and other creators often have extensive public audio archives. Public availability may make recordings easy to access, but it does not automatically answer whether they may be used to create a recognizable commercial persona.
For creators, the case could influence how contracts address voice models, training, imitation, attribution, endorsement and future licensing. For AI companies, it underscores the importance of documenting source materials, performer consent, model-development safeguards and procedures for handling credible impersonation complaints.
For listeners and journalists, the case is also a reminder that convincing vocal resemblance can have multiple explanations. Similarity may reflect training data, deliberate imitation, a hired performer, generic genre conventions or a combination of factors. Audio alone may be powerful evidence of what a listener perceives, but it does not necessarily reveal how a model was built.
Bottom line
David Greene’s lawsuit is a significant test of how right-of-publicity law may apply when an AI-generated voice appears to resemble a recognizable broadcaster. But it remains an allegation-driven case. Greene says NotebookLM exploited his voice and persona; Google says the voice came from a professional actor and is unrelated to him. The July 2026 ruling allowed the dispute to proceed without resolving those factual questions. The case’s broader importance lies in whether a recognizable synthetic identity can create legal liability even when proof of copying a particular recording—or proof of training-data inclusion—is not yet public.
