‘Longlegs’ Review: Is Nicolas Cage’s Thriller Really Nightmare Fuel?

Maika Monroe’s FBI agent anchors Longlegs, a serial-killer thriller that trades procedural certainty for supernatural dread. Its atmosphere is potent; its mystery’s payoff is less tidy.

Longlegs is a 2024 horror thriller that turns an FBI serial-killer investigation into something stranger and more unsettling. Maika Monroe’s reserved agent Lee Harker anchors the film, while Nicolas Cage plays the elusive killer at its center. Its strongest weapon is not a steady stream of shocks but the tension between procedural inquiry and supernatural dread; that same tension also shapes how satisfying its mystery feels.

What is Longlegs about?

Written and directed by Osgood Perkins, Longlegs follows FBI recruit Lee Harker as she is assigned to an unsolved case involving a difficult-to-catch serial killer. Harker’s unusual intuition gives the investigation an uncanny dimension, and the film gradually blends crime-thriller conventions with satanic suggestion. Blair Underwood and Alicia Witt also appear in the cast. The film’s official materials identify Monroe as Harker and Cage as the titular threat: NEON’s film page and the official site.

The perspective matters: Harker’s work is the spine of the story, not a detour on the way to a Cage showcase. TIME’s interview with Maika Monroe describes Harker as an unusual, reserved recruit whose insight helps her approach the case. Cage supplies the film’s most conspicuous menace, but Monroe’s controlled performance gives its investigation a human center.

Is Longlegs scary?

It is most effective as slow-building nightmare fuel. Perkins leans on ominous imagery, silence, and anticipation rather than making every scene depend on a conventional jump scare. The FBI case gives the unease a forward direction, while hints of the supernatural make it difficult to settle into the reassuring logic of a standard procedural.

That mixture is the film’s defining strength and its risk. The Atlantic’s review frames the challenge as balancing atmosphere with rules: mood and dread can carry a scene, but an investigation also invites viewers to track evidence and cause. Longlegs often prefers the feeling of menace to the clean satisfaction of a puzzle clicking into place. Viewers who prize oppressive atmosphere may find that choice compelling; those looking for a tightly legible detective story may find it frustrating.

Does the mystery and ending work?

The film’s central question is not only who is behind the crimes, but how much of what Harker encounters can be explained through ordinary investigative logic. Its supernatural suggestions broaden the story beyond a case file, yet they also change the terms by which a viewer might expect the mystery to resolve. The result is more unsettling than a purely procedural explanation, but not necessarily more mechanically tidy.

Rank #2

Whether the ending lands depends on what kind of payoff you want. If you want every clue and mechanism neatly accounted for, the final movement may feel less conclusive than the investigation’s setup promises. If you are willing to let dread and implication carry part of the resolution, its ambiguity can feel purposeful. TIME’s ending explainer notes that expectations and reactions around the ending have been polarized; that is a critical framing, not evidence of a universal audience response.

Who should watch Longlegs?

  • Watch it for atmosphere: The film is a strong fit if you enjoy crime stories that become unnerving through imagery, pacing, and uncertainty.
  • Expect a hybrid, not a straight procedural: Harker’s investigation matters, but supernatural suggestions keep the story from behaving like a conventional case-solving thriller.
  • Be open to an imperfectly tidy payoff: The film’s mood may linger longer than the precise mechanics of its mystery.

For viewers drawn to a documentary-style interest in investigations, the FBI framework offers a recognizable entry point; the film’s supernatural turn, however, is a deliberate departure from realistic true-crime storytelling.
