Bill Murray’s comic ranking at SNL50 put his brother, Brian Doyle-Murray, at No. 1. The February 16, 2025, anniversary special’s Weekend Update bit was a playful, personal list—not an authoritative history of every anchor. Colin Jost was left off the ten-slot ranking, while Michael Che received a separate joke ranking.
Bill Murray’s SNL50 Weekend Update ranking
During SNL50: The Anniversary Special, Murray stopped by the Weekend Update desk and ranked what he called the segment’s “regular” anchors. The official Saturday Night Live video listing, published February 17, 2025, describes the appearance as Murray ranking his best Weekend Update anchors of all time. Coverage by TheWrap and Parade reports the order as follows:
- No. 1: Brian Doyle-Murray
- No. 2: Norm Macdonald
- No. 3 (tie): Jane Curtin and Dan Aykroyd
- No. 4: Chevy Chase
- No. 5: Tina Fey and Jimmy Fallon
- No. 6: Tina Fey and Amy Poehler
- No. 7: Seth Meyers
- No. 8: Dennis Miller
- No. 9: Kevin Nealon
- No. 10: Colin Quinn
The list has ten ranked slots, not ten individual people: it includes two co-anchor pairings and a tie. Murray’s No. 1 reveal was deliberately self-serving—Brian Doyle-Murray is his brother—and should be read as a punchline rather than a considered verdict on the segment’s history.
Why Michael Che and Colin Jost were treated differently
Murray handled Michael Che separately from the “regular” list, joking that Che was the only Black anchor and naming him “by default.” TheWrap reproduces the line, “We’ll start with number one, and this is by default, Michael Che.” It is part of the gag, not evidence of a comprehensive demographic history of Weekend Update.
Colin Jost, Che’s current co-anchor at the time of the special, did not appear among the ten ranked slots. TheWrap reports that Murray teased Jost’s name before revealing Colin Quinn at No. 10. Because the segment framed its list as the “regular” anchors and separated Che into another joke, the omission does not turn the list into a complete roll call.

Murray also disqualified himself, saying, “Have to disqualify myself because my entire time here, I was on performance-enhancing drugs,” then inventing an “88-shaker” cocktail. As reported by TheWrap, these are comic lines from the performance, not a verified biographical disclosure.

The anniversary setting supplied a little historical context: the Associated Press notes that Saturday Night Live premiered on October 11, 1975, and identifies Chase as the first Weekend Update anchor. Murray joked that the segment would not exist without Chase, then placed him fourth. That contrast fits the loose spirit of the ranking; it does not make the order an objective measure of each anchor’s contribution.
