Logic’s “1-800-273-8255” uses the story of a person in suicidal crisis reaching a Lifeline counselor to make a direct point: ask for help, and keep going. Released in 2017, the song was associated with increased calls to the U.S. Lifeline and fewer suicides during several high-attention periods, according to a later study—but that evidence does not prove the song or its video caused those outcomes.
What does “1-800-273-8255” mean?
The title is the former U.S. National Suicide Prevention Lifeline phone number. Logic released the song on April 28, 2017, featuring Alessia Cara and Khalid, ahead of his album Everybody. The Lifeline’s release announcement described it as a message encouraging people in crisis to reach out for help. Universal Music Canada also confirmed the track’s featured artists and album context: Universal Music Canada’s announcement.
The song’s narrative moves from a caller’s despair to a conversation with a counselor and a renewed desire to live. In the Lifeline’s April 28, 2017 announcement, Logic described that arc as hearing “a person at the end of their rope,” then the counselor offering reasons to keep fighting, and finally the caller expressing a new outlook on life. That statement describes the song’s story; it is not a claim that music replaces counseling or other professional support. The announcement is available from Mental Health America of New York City and the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.
What is known about the music video?
The 2017 Lifeline announcement also described fan montage video public-service announcements connected with the song. In those montages, fans discussed how Logic’s music had helped them, alongside the Lifeline logo and phone number. That description is distinct from a verified account of the official narrative music video. The available source does not establish that video’s premiere date, director, cast, or scene-by-scene details, so those should not be inferred from the fan PSAs.

Did Logic’s song increase calls to the suicide hotline?
A 2021 peer-reviewed BMJ study found that periods of high public attention to the song were associated with more calls to the U.S. Lifeline than the study’s models expected. The authors analyzed daily Lifeline call and suicide data from January 1, 2010, through December 31, 2018, and estimated attention using Twitter posts. They focused on three events: the song’s release, its 2017 MTV Video Music Awards performance, and its 2018 Grammy Awards performance. The study evaluated attention to the song around these events, not the isolated effect of the music video: the BMJ study.
Across the combined 34 days following those three events, the authors estimated 9,915 excess Lifeline calls, or 6.9% above expected. Their reported 95% confidence interval for the estimated excess was 6,594 to 13,236 calls. These are modeled estimates over a defined period, not a count of callers who can each be shown to have heard the song.

Did the song actually prevent suicides?
For the same combined 34-day period, the BMJ study estimated 245 fewer suicides than expected, a 5.5% decrease; its reported 95% confidence interval was 36 to 453 fewer. The paper describes an association, not proof that the song—or its video—caused the difference. Public attention to a song can coincide with other events and influences, and the study cannot separate the effects of the recording, performances, media coverage, or other factors.
The careful conclusion is that the study linked high-attention periods for the song with increased Lifeline calls and fewer suicides than its models predicted. It does not establish that the video saved a particular number of lives or that one song can substitute for direct support.

What is the suicide hotline number now?
In the United States, the official 988 Lifeline currently offers support by call, text, and online chat. It describes its conversations as free and confidential and says it is available 24 hours a day, every day of the year. See the 988 Lifeline for current access information. The number in Logic’s title refers to the former Lifeline number, so use the current official 988 site rather than relying on the song title as your only route to support.
