LiveLeak shut down in early May 2021 after about 15 years online. Visitors were directed to ItemFix, a separate project presented by the LiveLeak team. Founder Hayden Hewitt said the team felt LiveLeak had achieved all it could and wanted to pursue something new, while outside reporting also described the operational pressures of keeping the site running.

What happened to LiveLeak?

LiveLeak closed in early May 2021. The site no longer operates as the video platform that became associated with graphic footage, war reporting, political events and citizen journalism. Visitors were sent to ItemFix, where the farewell message from the LiveLeak team remains displayed.

The redirect does not prove that LiveLeak’s full video archive, user accounts or community moved to ItemFix. The available evidence supports calling ItemFix the destination presented to visitors, not a confirmed archive or complete migration.

When did LiveLeak close?

Contemporaneous reporting placed the shutdown on May 5, 2021. TechSpot reported that date, while BioBioChile and Engadget published reports on May 6 and May 7 respectively. Those publication dates should not be mistaken for later closure dates.

Why did LiveLeak shut down?

The founders’ stated reason

In the farewell hosted on ItemFix, Hayden Hewitt wrote that the team felt “LiveLeak had achieved all that it could” and that it was time to “try something new and exciting.” He also wrote, “Sometimes it’s just the right time to chart a new path.” This is the team’s explanation for moving on, not an independently verified account of every business or legal factor.

Operational pressure was part of the context

TechSpot separately reported Hewitt discussing the pressures of keeping LiveLeak operating, including that it was not a low-cost blog. That supports treating hosting and operating costs as part of the context, but not as proof that hosting costs alone caused the shutdown. Engadget noted that the precise reason was difficult to pinpoint.

What was ItemFix?

ItemFix was described in the farewell as a different, fresh project. Its current page presents tools for making video-to-GIF conversions, memes and text-to-speech content. Those features show what ItemFix offers now; they do not establish that it preserves LiveLeak’s archive or reproduces its former community.

What was LiveLeak known for?

LiveLeak’s reputation was built partly on graphic and violent videos, which explains the site’s association with the phrase “gory terror.” That description is editorial shorthand rather than a complete account of the platform.

Contemporary coverage also described LiveLeak as a place for real footage of politics, war and world events, including material supplied through citizen journalism. Its appeal and controversy came from publishing difficult, disturbing events that many conventional outlets did not show in the same way.

A controversial record

Engadget reported that New Zealand blocked access to LiveLeak in 2019 in connection with the publication of video of the Christchurch mass shooting. That episode illustrates the serious moderation and public-safety controversies around the platform, but the reporting does not establish it as the direct cause of the 2021 shutdown.

What happened to LiveLeak’s videos and accounts?

No confirmed public evidence in the available reporting establishes that LiveLeak’s entire archive, accounts or user community migrated to ItemFix. The safest conclusion is narrower: LiveLeak closed, and its visitors were directed to a different service operated by the same team.

LiveLeak’s final chapter

After roughly 15 years, LiveLeak ended without a single publicly proven explanation that accounts for every factor. The team’s farewell framed the decision as the end of a project that had reached its limits and the beginning of something new. Reporting about operating pressures adds context, but not a definitive alternative cause.
