In 2023, livestreaming was one part of a broader creator mix—not a format that displaced short videos, long-form, or podcasts. The evidence also points to different platform patterns depending on whether the measure is where survey respondents usually watched creator livestreams, what platforms said about live communities, or how many channels a national market monitor counted.
Livestreaming joined a wider mix of creator formats
YouTube’s 2023 Culture & Trends report described creators extending their storytelling across long-form video, Shorts, livestreams, and podcasts. In the report, 87% of people surveyed had watched at least four YouTube content formats during the previous 12 months. That finding is about format variety on YouTube; it is not a measure of livestream viewing or proof that publishing in multiple formats causes growth for every creator.
YouTube’s January 2023 creator-economy outlook also discussed creators reaching viewers on connected TVs and using long-form video and Shorts together. It cited 1.5 billion monthly logged-in Shorts viewers in the prior year. That number describes Shorts viewers, not livestream audiences, but it illustrates the broader format environment in which live content operated.
Where respondents said they usually watched creator livestreams
The Influencer Marketing Factory’s 2023 Creator Economy Report asked: “Where do you usually watch livestreams by content creators/influencers?” The reported answers were:

The report chart does not provide enough sample and methodology detail to establish that the distribution represents all viewers.
Live content extended beyond gaming
Twitch’s 2023 engineering account described creators streaming gaming, chatting, music, and cooking, and presented interaction with communities as central to the live experience. This is Twitch’s own description of its platform and priorities, rather than an independent measurement of every livestreaming service. It nevertheless reflects the breadth of live programming visible on the platform beyond gameplay alone.

Germany’s channel data showed a different platform picture
The Landesanstalt für Kommunikation Baden-Württemberg’s Online-Video-Monitor 2023 reported that Twitch accounted for 93% of live-streaming channels counted among Twitch, YouTube, and Facebook Gaming in its German analysis. This is a share of channels in that specific market and comparison set—not a global share of viewers, watch time, or livestream activity.
The monitor also reported a tendency toward more livestreams and higher-quality or more expensive production. Read alongside the survey percentages above, the finding shows why platform claims need their measure and geography attached: a survey of usual viewing destinations and a country-specific count of channels answer different questions.

What creators could take from the 2023 picture
- Treat live as one format among several. YouTube’s reporting supports format breadth as a description of viewing and publishing, but does not establish a guaranteed growth formula.
- Choose a platform for the audience and format. The survey’s viewing responses, Twitch’s account of community interaction, and Germany’s channel count point to different dimensions; none alone identifies a universal best platform.
- Plan for the work behind live output. The German monitor’s report of more live output and higher production investment is a market-specific signal, not evidence that every creator needs costly production.
- Keep audience claims precise. The cited figures do not establish a global 2023 livestream audience total or creator earnings figure.
Keeping a YouTube channel live with prerecorded video
For creators whose goal is specifically to keep a YouTube channel live around the clock using uploaded recordings, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a video or create a playlist, add the YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded video from the cloud, so a computer does not need to stay on. StreamNeo is for YouTube streams and uploaded videos, not camera-based live broadcasting. Each slot uses one flat price regardless of uploaded quality, up to 4K 60fps, and includes 10 GB of pooled storage per slot across active slots, looping and playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and team support. The first day is free with no card. This is a practical service for that use case, not evidence about a 2023 industry trend. Try StreamNeo’s free first day.
