The clearest current trend is divergence: overall viewing across the services tracked in the latest report was nearly flat quarter over quarter, while individual platforms moved in different directions. YouTube Live grew, Kick gained year over year, Twitch remained down year over year, and YouTube Gaming declined. For creators, that makes platform fit and audience discovery more useful questions than a single “best platform” ranking. For businesses, the available figures describe viewing—not leads, sales, or return on investment.
What the latest viewing data says
Streamlabs and Stream Hatchet’s Q2 2026 Live Streaming Report, published August 27, 2026, counted 21.5 billion hours watched across the platforms it tracks. That total was up 0.1% from Q1 2026 and 7.6% from Q2 2025. The near-flat quarterly total conceals sharply different platform-level movements.
The figures below use the report’s definitions and tracked services; they are not a measure of all online video viewing. Its watch-time shares describe that tracked-services denominator, not each platform’s share of every livestream watched online.

The report’s first edition to count YouTube Live separately from YouTube Gaming makes an important distinction: gaming-only measurements no longer represent the full mix of viewing on YouTube Live. Treating the two labels as interchangeable would obscure both the scale of YouTube’s broader live viewing and the decline reported for its gaming category.

What the trends mean for creators
Choose for audience fit, not headline share alone
A large share of tracked viewing does not guarantee that a new channel will be discovered, and a smaller platform’s faster growth does not guarantee an audience for a particular creator. The report estimates average viewers per channel at about 308 for YouTube Live, 85 for Kick, 78 for YouTube Gaming, and 23 for Twitch in Q2 2026. Those are report-specific averages, not a forecast of an individual channel’s reach. Channel counts, audiences, content mix, and the report’s measurement boundaries all matter when interpreting them.
Use the numbers as directional context, then make a platform choice around the viewers you want to reach, the kind of show you can sustain, and the discovery and interaction tools available to your account. A creator whose audience follows a gaming category has a different decision from one making interviews, performances, tutorials, or live reactions.

Non-gaming viewing is part of the live market
Non-gaming content led viewing on Twitch, Kick, Afreeca, and industry-wide in Q2 2026, even though first-person shooters were the most-streamed genre overall. The contrast matters: what creators broadcast most often is not necessarily what accounts for the most viewing. It is a reason to investigate audience demand in a specific niche, not proof that a particular non-gaming idea will succeed.
On Twitch, Just Chatting remained the top category at 670.5 million hours watched, while League of Legends continued to draw substantial esports viewing. These examples show the breadth of live programming, rather than offering a universal content formula.

Plan the broadcast as a workflow
Live programming increasingly has useful work to do before and after the on-air event as well as during it. YouTube’s September 16, 2025 official announcement described tools and rollouts that can support that wider workflow. The announcement does not establish that every feature is available to every account or region today, so check the current options in your YouTube account before planning a production around them.

YouTube also reported that over 30% of its daily logged-in viewers watched live content in Q2 2025. This is a YouTube-reported figure about its own logged-in viewers, not a cross-platform comparison or a measure of how many viewers a particular creator can attract.

What businesses should—and should not—infer
For a business, a livestream can be an interactive format for a product demonstration, event, Q&A, training session, or other communication. The Q2 2026 report measures platform viewing and channel activity, while YouTube’s announcement describes product features and YouTube audience behavior. Neither source compares business outcomes such as registrations, qualified leads, sales, retention, or return on investment across platforms. Gaming watch time cannot stand in for those results.
Instead, treat a business stream as a channel-specific experiment. Before choosing a platform or format, answer these questions:

- Audience: Where do your intended viewers already watch live content, and can you reach them there?
- Purpose: Is the broadcast a demonstration, event, Q&A, training session, or something else? Pick a format that makes the intended audience’s participation useful.
- Operations: Who will present, moderate questions, handle technical issues, and follow up afterward?
- Outcome: What will count as success—attendance, questions answered, registrations, qualified follow-ups, sales, or another defined measure?
- Evaluation: Compare the result with your own objective and effort. Do not infer business performance from general viewing totals.
