If you mostly listen to podcasts, set Spotify up to favor audio: enable audio-only streaming and downloads, review the newer video controls, and prevent downloads over cellular unless you want them. Then tune data use, playback, and content preferences to suit your habits. Spotify’s controls and labels vary by device and account, so treat the paths below as a guide and use the options available in your app.
Quick setup: Video controls off if you do not want video; audio-only streaming and downloads on; downloads over cellular off; media quality Normal or Automatic; Autoplay off. Turn Data Saver on if you have a limited data plan, and disable explicit content on a child’s or shared account.
Change these three settings first to avoid podcast video
Spotify has separate controls for video playback, streaming, and downloads. Use the combination that matches how you listen rather than assuming one switch removes video from every screen or device. Spotify announced broader video controls on April 9, 2026, with a global rollout during April; availability and labels may vary by platform and account. See Spotify’s video-controls announcement.
1. Turn off the global video controls if you want an audio-first app
In the mobile app, tap your profile picture, then open Settings and privacy → Content and display. Look for the video controls and switch off the video playback or display options you do not want. Spotify says its newer controls cover video across music and podcasts and are rolling out across mobile, desktop, web, TV, and other experiences. The exact options you see may differ.

This is the broadest place to review whether video appears or plays, but it is not a promise that every visual surface disappears. If you do not see the controls, use the audio-only options below and check again after updating Spotify.
2. Enable audio-only streaming for video podcasts
Go to Settings and privacy → Data-saving and offline → Downloads and streaming, then enable Audio-only streaming for video podcasts. This is the most relevant setting for listening with the screen off or over cellular data: Spotify describes it as a way to avoid receiving video while streaming. It may not remove every video element from the interface.
Spotify’s support guidance has historically associated the control with non-Wi-Fi streaming. Test it with a video podcast over cellular rather than assuming it behaves the same way on Wi-Fi, desktop, TV, or a connected device. The setting is documented in Spotify’s internet and data usage guide.
3. Enable audio-only downloads for video podcasts
In the same Data-saving and offline → Downloads and streaming area, turn on Audio-only downloads for video podcasts if you save episodes. This tells Spotify not to include video when downloading video-podcast episodes. Set it before downloading new episodes; if an existing download does not reflect the preference, remove it and download it again.

Control data use, downloads, and sound quality
4. Turn Data Saver on only if the trade-off suits you
Find Settings and privacy → Data-saving and offline → Data Saver and switch it on for a limited data plan. Spotify says Data Saver reduces app data use by showing fewer images and reducing audio quality. It is a broad data-saving choice, not just a podcast-video switch, and it can affect music as well as spoken audio. If your only concern is video, start with the audio-only controls instead.
5. Leave Downloads over cellular off unless you intend to use mobile data
Under Settings and privacy → Data-saving and offline → Downloads and streaming, leave Downloads over cellular off if you want downloads to use Wi-Fi. Spotify says Wi-Fi is the default and this control allows downloads over a mobile connection. Turn it on only if you have checked your plan and have enough device storage.

6. Choose podcast quality deliberately
Open Settings and privacy, then find Media Quality on Android or Audio Quality on iOS. Review the available Wi-Fi streaming, cellular streaming, and download options. Spotify’s support documentation puts podcast audio at approximately 96 kbit/s on most devices and 128 kbit/s in the web player; on mobile and tablet, choosing Low reduces it to approximately 24 kbit/s. These are Spotify’s documented podcast figures, not a guarantee for every device or connection. Details are in Spotify’s audio quality guide.
- Limited data: choose Low or Normal for cellular and Normal for Wi-Fi.
- Everyday listening: leave quality at Normal or Automatic.
- Offline listening: Normal download quality is a reasonable balance between storage and intelligibility.
- Plentiful data and good headphones: try a higher option if your device offers one, but do not assume a music-quality setting makes podcasts lossless or high-resolution.
Higher quality uses more data, and higher-quality downloads use more storage. Spotify’s detailed quality choices are primarily framed around music; podcast quality is handled separately.
Make playback and content more predictable
7. Turn Autoplay off if you want playback to stop
Go to Settings and privacy → Playback → Autoplay and switch it off if you do not want Spotify to continue with similar music after selected music ends. Spotify’s official description focuses on music continuation, so do not rely on this toggle alone to control every podcast queue or recommendation. For unexpected continuation, also inspect the current Play Queue, the show or playlist you started, and whether another device is controlling playback. See Spotify’s Autoplay guide.

8. Review the explicit-content filter for shared or child accounts
Open Settings and privacy → Content and display → Allow Explicit Content. Turn it off if you want explicit-tagged music and podcasts blocked on a child’s or shared account. Spotify says tagged items are grayed out, cannot be played, and are skipped. This is not a universal profanity filter: it depends on the rights holder’s labeling, and incorrectly tagged material can still appear. Spotify explains the control and reporting route in its explicit-content settings guide.

Choose a setup for the way you listen
| Listener | Suggested setup | Trade-off or note |
|---|---|---|
| Audio-only listener | Global video controls off; audio-only streaming and downloads on; cellular downloads off. | Some video surfaces may still differ by device or account. |
| Limited-data listener | Audio-only streaming and downloads on; Data Saver on; cellular downloads off; cellular quality Low or Normal; Autoplay off. | Data Saver also reduces image loading and audio quality. |
| Frequent traveler | Audio-only downloads on; cellular downloads off unless necessary; download episodes over Wi-Fi and verify they play offline. | Spotify requires an online check-in at least once every 30 days to retain downloads. |
| Someone who watches selected podcasts | Keep audio-only streaming and downloads on, then use the global video controls or episode-level audio/video option when visuals matter. | Controls and episode options may vary by client. |
| Parent or shared-account user | Explicit Content off; review video controls; cellular downloads off; Autoplay off. | Explicit filtering depends on accurate labeling. Premium Family account managers have additional explicit-content controls. |
| Premium subscriber | Use the same settings; download podcasts for offline listening where the show allows it. | Premium does not necessarily remove host-read sponsorships or promotions integrated into an episode. |
Fix common video, download, and playback problems
A setting is missing
- Update Spotify and check in the mobile or desktop app rather than a car or TV interface.
- Search Settings for “video,” “audio-only,” “download,” or “data.”
- Close and reopen the app after changing a control, then test with a known video podcast.
- Availability and labels can vary by platform, account, and rollout; one client not showing a control does not establish that it is unavailable everywhere.
An existing download still behaves like a video episode
- Remove the existing episode download.
- Confirm Audio-only downloads for video podcasts is enabled.
- Download the episode again, preferably over Wi-Fi.
- Use Offline Mode or disconnect from the network to verify that the saved episode plays without a connection.
Spotify’s offline help page lists a Remove all downloads control under Data-saving and offline if you need to clear saved content in bulk.
Downloads disappear or will not play offline
Spotify says downloaded content requires an online connection at least once every 30 days. Downloads can also be affected by reinstalling the app, using more than five devices, an outdated app, insufficient storage, connection problems, or SD-card trouble. Spotify recommends at least 1 GB of free memory for downloads. Free users can download podcasts according to Spotify’s US offline documentation, although some shows may require Premium; music downloads require Premium in that documentation. Show availability and account terms can vary.
Playback continues after an episode
Turn off Autoplay, then check what is in the Play Queue and whether you started a show feed, playlist, or recommendation instead of one episode. Also check whether another device is controlling playback. Spotify documents Autoplay chiefly as a way to continue similar music, so podcast continuation may have another cause.
Useful podcast controls that are not part of the eight settings
From the Now Playing screen, Spotify’s podcast player offers playback speed, 15-second skip forward, and 15-second rewind controls. As a listening preference, try 1.2×–1.5× for conversational shows, 1× for dense interviews, fiction, or language learning, and rewind when you miss a key point. These are listening suggestions, not Spotify requirements. See Spotify’s podcasts and shows guide.

If a show offers both audio and video, check the episode’s Now Playing screen for an audio/video switch. It can be useful when you want to watch one episode without changing your general audio-first preferences; its presence depends on the episode and app.
What Premium changes—and what it does not
Premium is not required for the eight settings above. Spotify’s US offline help says free users can download podcasts, while music downloads require Premium; some shows may require Premium for downloads. Availability depends on the show and account. Offline listening also requires reconnecting online at least once every 30 days.
Do not assume Premium removes every podcast advertisement. Spotify distinguishes its own ads from host-read sponsorships and other promotions integrated by creators, which can remain in an episode. See Spotify’s podcast and show guidance.
