Lisa Frankenstein is a 2024 horror-comedy romance about an isolated high-school student who reanimates the corpse of her ideal boyfriend during a freak electrical storm. Written by Diablo Cody and directed by Zelda Williams in her feature-film debut, it combines 1980s teen comedy, gothic fantasy, bloody body horror, and an unusually sincere undead love story.
Focus Features calls it a “coming of RAGE love story,” while its official synopsis follows Lisa and the Creature as they pursue love, happiness, and missing body parts. It is not a direct adaptation of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein; it is an original contemporary riff on the Frankenstein idea.
What is Lisa Frankenstein about?
Lisa Swallows is a socially isolated teenager struggling with grief, family trauma, and life at an unfriendly high school. During a violent electrical storm, she brings a handsome 19th-century corpse back to life. Lisa sees the newly awakened Creature as an ideal romantic partner, but keeping an undead boyfriend hidden—and helping him recover the body parts he needs—quickly turns her fantasy into a murderous gothic adventure.
The central joke and dramatic tension come from the film’s reversal of expectations. Lisa is the living character, but she is alienated and emotionally shut down; the Creature is literally dead, yet gradually becomes more expressive, caring, and human. Their relationship lets the film ask who is really behaving monstrously and whether identity can be remade after trauma.

Is Lisa Frankenstein a Frankenstein adaptation?
No. Lisa Frankenstein is an original screenplay by Diablo Cody, not a straightforward adaptation of Mary Shelley’s novel. It borrows the broad cultural idea of a reanimated body and reshapes it into a stylized teen horror-romance set in the 1980s.
The movie is closer to a genre mash-up than to a traditional literary adaptation. It uses the Frankenstein premise as a launching point for a story about teenage alienation, romantic fantasy, grief, cruelty, and self-reinvention. The Creature is not simply a monster who threatens Lisa; he becomes the strange partner through whom she explores power, desire, and revenge.

The film reunites her with producer Mason Novick, with whom she previously collaborated on projects including Juno, Jennifer’s Body, Young Adult, and Tully. That connection helps explain the movie’s interest in difficult, socially misfit characters and its mixture of dark humor with emotional damage.
What kind of movie is it?
The most accurate description is a heightened coming-of-age horror-romance. It contains several recognizable genres at once:
- Teen comedy: Lisa’s school life, social exclusion, and clashes with other teenagers provide the film’s comic framework.
- Gothic romance: Lisa’s ideal partner is a corpse from the Victorian era, making romantic courtship inseparable from death and decay.
- Fantasy: The electrical storm and reanimation premise are treated as heightened genre logic rather than realistic science.
- Body horror: Missing limbs, decomposition, reconstruction, and bloody violence are essential to the plot rather than incidental decoration.
- Revenge story: Lisa’s anger at the people and circumstances that have hurt her increasingly shapes the couple’s actions.
That tonal volatility is deliberate, but it will not work for everyone. The film can shift quickly from playful teen banter to grief, sexual violence, or graphic macabre comedy. Its appeal depends heavily on whether the viewer enjoys movies that prioritize visual personality and outrageous genre combinations over a consistently controlled tone.

The 1980s setting and visual style
Lisa Frankenstein is set in the 1980s, although the available research does not establish a specific calendar year. Its retro identity comes through in the costumes, production design, color palette, music-driven atmosphere, and heightened horror-comedy sensibility.

The visual approach is more stylized than naturalistic. The movie treats Lisa’s world as a colorful, theatrical version of suburban adolescence, then places an old-fashioned corpse and gothic imagery inside it. That contrast is one of the film’s main sources of energy: pastel teen-movie surfaces coexist with rot, graveyard imagery, blood, and surgical reconstruction.
The setting is not merely decoration. Lisa’s desire to transform herself and escape social judgment is reflected in a movie that continually remakes familiar forms—teen romance, high-school comedy, and Frankenstein horror—into something stranger and more artificial.
The film’s main themes
Alienation and the desire to be seen
Lisa begins as an outsider. Her isolation makes the Creature’s attention unusually important: he does not approach her as a conventional popular teenager or demand that she conform before accepting her. Their relationship grows from mutual otherness, even though the balance of power between them becomes increasingly complicated.
Who gets called a monster?
The film’s most useful critical question is not whether the Creature looks monstrous. It is whether the living people around Lisa behave more humanely than the reanimated man beside her. The movie uses its supernatural premise to challenge the social labels placed on outsiders and to show that physical normality is not the same as compassion.

Lisa’s relationship with death is tied to loss and unresolved family trauma. The Creature’s physical reconstruction mirrors Lisa’s emotional effort to rebuild herself. Both characters are, in different ways, incomplete. The film turns that incompleteness into a literal plot mechanism while also using it as a metaphor for adolescence.
Romantic fantasy versus reality
Lisa initially imagines the Creature as the perfect boyfriend partly because he cannot behave like an ordinary living teenager. That fantasy gives her control over romance, but the relationship becomes more complicated as both characters develop needs and agency of their own. The movie’s romance therefore has a deliberately unsettling question at its center: what happens when an idealized partner starts becoming a real person?

Reception: why the movie is divisive
Reviews for Lisa Frankenstein were mixed. Positive responses highlighted its originality, gothic charm, visual energy, performances, chemistry between Kathryn Newton and Cole Sprouse, and willingness to pursue extreme comic-horror ideas. More critical reviews pointed to uneven pacing, abrupt genre changes, and a structure that can feel assembled from contrasting parts.
That split is important because the film is not easy to classify as either a conventional studio success or a simple critical failure. Rotten Tomatoes’ indexed coverage reflects criticism of its pacing and tonal execution, while the Metacritic review record shows a broad range of reactions to its originality, performances, moral roughness, and genre blending.

Is the Blu-ray worth buying?
The Lisa Frankenstein Blu-ray + Digital Collector’s Edition is the clearest physical-media option for fans who enjoy the movie’s retro aesthetic or want a permanent copy rather than relying on changing digital availability. Universal confirms that the edition exists, and the researched U.S. retailer snapshot listed Blu-ray purchase options.
That recommendation is about format and ownership, not an unverified claim about bonus features, packaging quality, image testing, or current price. The official listing should be consulted for the exact contents of the edition before buying. A DVD Collector’s Edition is the more practical alternative for households without Blu-ray hardware.
Physical media may also make more sense for this particular film than its theatrical performance suggests. The Numbers reports estimated U.S. physical-disc sales of approximately $440,773 for DVD and $689,275 for Blu-ray, or about $1.13 million combined. These are estimates, not audited studio disclosures, but they indicate a measurable home-media market for the title.

Lisa Frankenstein is best approached as a deliberately excessive, visually driven genre experiment—not a traditional Frankenstein adaptation. Its reanimated-boyfriend premise, 1980s palette, Diablo Cody script, Zelda Williams direction, and Kathryn Newton–Cole Sprouse pairing make it distinctive. The same tonal swings that attract fans also explain its mixed reviews, so it is most likely to work for viewers who enjoy camp, gothic romance, teen alienation, and bloody horror in the same movie.
