Freshness note: This is a Season 2 catch-up, not a full-series recap; Paramount+’s current show page lists three seasons. Season 1 follows CIA operative Joe as she recruits and trains Cruz for an undercover Lioness assignment: get close to Aaliyah, whose circle offers access to a target. The mission tests Cruz’s cover and judgment, while Joe’s work puts pressure on her family life with Neal and their daughter Kate. Here are the essential threads to carry into Season 2, without spoiling finale details that Paramount’s episode guide does not spell out.
What is the Season 1 mission?
Paramount+ describes Joe as the CIA’s “tip of the spear” in the war on terror, balancing that work with her personal life. The series is inspired by a real U.S. military program, but it is a fictional drama—not a documentary account of actual operations. The eight-episode first season centers on Joe recruiting Cruz for an undercover assignment and preparing her to approach Aaliyah.

The operation depends on Cruz gaining Aaliyah’s trust. That creates the season’s central tension: the closer Cruz gets to her, the more difficult it becomes to separate genuine personal connection from the demands of the mission—and to keep her cover intact.
How does the story unfold?
Joe chooses and trains Cruz
The season opens with a field mission going wrong for Joe and her team, leaving Joe devastated. At the same time, Cruz is trying to escape a dangerous situation. Joe must choose a recruit, and Cruz becomes the operative she trains for the assignment.

Cruz builds a connection with Aaliyah
After training, Cruz begins building a relationship with Aaliyah and spends time with Aaliyah’s circle. The operation’s access depends on that closeness, but intimacy also complicates the job. Cruz’s position becomes precarious as the season raises questions about her conduct and whether her cover can survive scrutiny.
Other threats keep Joe’s team under pressure
Cruz’s assignment is not the team’s only concern. Kaitlyn and Westfield confront Kyle over a separate incident, and Joe’s unit is later deployed against another threat while Cruz’s cover may be in jeopardy. These parallel operations keep Joe balancing the undercover mission with the wider demands on her team.
Joe’s family feels the cost
Joe and Neal deal with the aftermath of their daughter Kate’s accident, and Kate later returns home. The family storyline makes the personal strain of Joe’s work visible: her responsibilities do not end when she leaves the field, and the job affects the people waiting for her there.
The finale brings the danger to a head
By the closing stretch, the mission may be in jeopardy, and Eshan confronts Cruz before his wedding. Joe and the team prepare for the worst. Paramount’s official episode summaries establish these stakes but do not provide a complete account of the finale’s resolution, so the safest refresher is that Cruz’s cover and the operation are under serious pressure at the climax.

What carries into Season 2?
Season 2 shifts the operative focus: rather than continuing with Cruz as the central undercover recruit, its official premise says Joe, Kaitlyn, and Byron enlist a new Lioness operative. Paramount announced that Season 2 premiered on October 27, 2024, with two episodes. Its description frames the threat as one that has moved “closer to home.”
| Season 1 | Season 2’s announced setup |
|---|---|
| Cruz is recruited and trained for an undercover assignment that depends on gaining Aaliyah’s trust. | Joe, Kaitlyn, and Byron enlist a new Lioness operative to infiltrate a previously unknown threat. |
| The central operational tension is Cruz’s access to Aaliyah and the risk of her cover being exposed. | Paramount describes the threat as moving closer to home. |
That comparison is limited to the official premise; it does not establish a broader change in tone, pacing, or detailed plot outcomes. And because the show has since continued to a third season, viewers using this as a catch-up should note that Season 2 is no longer the latest season listed on Paramount+.
How successful was the show?
In its May 9, 2024 renewal announcement, Paramount+ reported nearly six million total viewers during the show’s first week, combining Paramount+ globally with a linear preview on Paramount Network. That is Paramount’s reported figure, not an independently audited measurement. In the same announcement, Paramount+ programming executive Jeff Grossman praised the audience response and the performances of Zoe Saldaña, Laysla De Oliveira, and Nicole Kidman; that statement was promotional, not an independent critical assessment.
