Lion vs. hyena: how their hunting strategies and social behavior differ

Lions and spotted hyenas are both active predators and scavengers, but they solve the same problems differently. Lions are pride-living cats that cooperate in contests and hunts, while spotted hyenas live in clans whose members associate flexibly. A hyena may hunt alone, join a temporary group, scavenge, or help mob lions at a carcass. The decisive factor is rarely a simple species-wide rule: prey, habitat, group size, social relationships, possession of the food and the presence of adult male lions all change the outcome.

What the comparison really covers

“Hyena” can refer to several species, but the detailed evidence behind this comparison concerns the spotted hyena (Crocuta crocuta) and its encounters with lions. The two predators overlap across much of sub-Saharan Africa and often arrive at the same fresh kill. That overlap makes them competitors, but it does not make their social systems interchangeable.

Lions are conventionally described as living in prides. The evidence assembled for this article does not provide a detailed, balanced account of pride composition or assign numerical roles to every member during a hunt, so claims about lion cooperation should remain broad. Spotted hyenas live in clans, yet a clan is not a permanent hunting pack. Individuals can travel and feed alone, in small temporary parties or in larger gatherings when a social or competitive situation requires it.

The most useful question is therefore not “Which animal is the better predator?” It is: under these prey and local conditions, which strategy gives each animal access to food while limiting risk?

Quick comparison

Axis Lions Spotted hyenas
Basic social unit Prides; this comparison’s evidence does not quantify pride structure in detail. Clans with flexible association. Members may forage alone or in changing subgroups.
Feeding strategy Hunt and scavenge, and may contest hyenas at carcasses. Hunt and scavenge. They are not simply animals waiting for lion leftovers.
Typical cooperation described by the available evidence Participation in contests over kills is documented; the supplied studies do not quantify pride hunting roles. Temporary cooperation in some hunts and collective mobbing of lions. Participation varies with context and relationships.
What changes a contest Possession at the start of an encounter and adult male presence are important. Numbers present, social bonds, kinship, recent greetings, clan size and local lion pressure matter.
Geographic qualification Competition outcomes vary among sites and encounters. Prey availability, territory size, clan size and the local ratio of hyenas to lions can sharply alter behavior.

Spotted hyenas are hunters as well as scavengers

The old image of a hyena as a scavenger that waits for lions is inaccurate. In an Etosha National Park study, Martina Trinkel and Gerald Kastberger explicitly described spotted hyenas as “successful hunters” that also scavenge. Hunting and scavenging are complementary ways to obtain food, not mutually exclusive identities.

Scavenging can provide a valuable meal when another predator has already killed prey. Hunting, however, lets a hyena obtain food without waiting for a carcass to appear and can be especially important when suitable live prey is abundant. A hyena that approaches a carcass may therefore be the animal that made the kill, a late-arriving scavenger, or both at different times in the same landscape.

Calling a hyena a hunter does not mean that every hunt is a coordinated clan operation. The best numerical evidence comes from a seven-year study of one large clan in Kenya by K. E. Holekamp, L. Smale, R. Berg and S. M. Cooper, published in the Journal of Zoology in 1997. Of 272 observed hunting attempts, more than 75% were made by lone hyenas. That included attempts on antelope as much as three times the hunter’s body mass, including wildebeest and topi.

Those figures describe one population and study period, not a universal solitary-hunting rate for every spotted hyena. They do establish an important correction to the phrase “hyenas hunt in packs”: cooperative hunting occurs, but solitary hunting can be the dominant pattern in a real clan.

When hyenas hunt alone and when they join others

Prey size and type

In the Kenyan study, zebra were the commonly hunted prey most often pursued in groups. The pattern suggests that cooperation is responsive to the practical difficulty of the target rather than an automatic expression of clan membership. A lone hyena may pursue a manageable opportunity, while a more demanding or defensive prey animal can make additional hunters worthwhile.

Prey availability also changed through the seasons. The long-term Masai Mara observations found that hyenas tended to hunt whichever prey was most abundant at the time. This flexibility matters because a clan’s hunting pattern cannot be separated from what the landscape is offering.

Age and experience

Group size and age affected hunting success in the same study. Young hyenas did not immediately perform like adults; the population reached adult hunting competency at roughly five to six years. That is a finding from the studied clan, not a fixed developmental deadline that should be applied to every population.

What “success” means

Approximately one-third of the observed hunting attempts in that study resulted in prey capture. This is an attempt-level result for one clan, not a species-wide success rate. It also illustrates why a dramatic chase is not the same as a successful hunt: many attempts end without a capture, and success depends on prey, conditions, the hunters’ ages and the number of participants.

How lion hunting differs in broad outline

Lions are the stalking cats in the usual behavioral contrast with “coursing” hyenas: they seek opportunities to approach prey closely before a short, forceful attack, whereas hyenas can pursue prey over distance. A movement study uses that stalking-versus-coursing contrast in its title, but it examines movement and interactions rather than testing every detail of lion hunting tactics. It does not justify assigning a single standardized role to every lion in every pride hunt.

The evidence available here does support a broad comparison: lions can hunt larger prey than spotted hyenas, while hyenas combine endurance-oriented pursuit, opportunistic prey selection and scavenging. It does not provide balanced numerical data on lion stalking distances, ambush positions, chase duration or the percentage of hunts performed by particular pride members. Those details should not be invented to make the two species appear more symmetrical than the evidence allows.

In practical terms, a lion kill and a hyena kill can both become a social event. Once food is available, the question changes from “Who can catch prey?” to “Who can hold the carcass, who can recruit allies and who faces the greater risk?”

Prides and clans: two different kinds of social life

Lion prides

Lions are pride-living cats. A pride provides a persistent social setting in which individuals may encounter one another repeatedly and may become involved in shared defense or contests. The studies considered here do not offer a detailed primary-source breakdown of pride membership, leadership or cooperative hunting roles, so it is safest to use “pride” as the established social unit without assigning universal duties to every lion.

Spotted-hyena clans

A spotted-hyena clan is also a social unit, but clan membership does not mean that all animals travel, hunt or feed together at all times. Associations can be flexible. Individuals may leave the immediate group, forage alone and later reunite with clan members at a den, carcass or territorial interaction.

That flexibility is visible during confrontations with lions. Hyenas sometimes approach collectively and mob a lion or lions, but the decision to participate is not random. A separate social study found that kinship, the strength of social bonds and recent greeting interactions helped predict which hyenas joined collective mobbing. Hyenas that participated were also more likely than nonparticipants to feed at the contested carcass afterward.

In other words, “the clan” is not a single mind. A hyena weighs the immediate danger and opportunity through its relationships, condition and location within the group.

Why lions and hyenas meet at kills

A 27-year analysis of lion-hyena encounters covered the territories of seven hyena clans at two Kenyan study sites. Encounters occurred most often at fresh kills, where both species had a direct reason to approach and a large meal to defend.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The starting possession of the carcass mattered. The animal or group that already controlled the food at the beginning of an encounter was more likely to retain it. This is a reminder that “who killed the prey” and “who is eating now” are not always the same question. A predator that arrives first can gain a practical advantage even if another species is capable of killing comparable prey.

Adult male lions also changed the interaction. Hyenas were less likely to mob when adult male lions were present, consistent with the increased danger of confronting them. More hyenas present made mobbing more likely. Neither pattern guarantees a takeover: a large hyena gathering can still fail, and a lion group can still abandon a carcass.

What hyena mobbing is—and is not

A risky collective action

Mobbing is coordinated pressure on a lion or lions around food or another contested location. It can involve several hyenas approaching, vocalizing and moving around the opponent. The behavior is risky because the target is a powerful predator, and a numerical advantage does not remove the chance of injury.

Mobbing should therefore not be described as a guaranteed hyena victory or as proof that hyenas are always socially united. The Kenyan encounter analysis found that participation rose with the number of hyenas present and fell when adult male lions were present. The social-participation study showed that relationships helped predict who joined. These findings describe conditional cooperation, not an automatic pack response.

Food after the confrontation

Participants in collective mobbing were more likely than nonparticipants to feed at the contested carcass afterward. That association fits a straightforward payoff: joining can be dangerous, but a successful or partially successful challenge may provide access to food. It also helps explain why social bonds matter even when the immediate scene looks purely competitive.

Communal dens and cub protection

In Etosha National Park, researchers observed mobbing near communal dens and suggested that the behavior could be a response to the danger lions posed to cubs. A den encounter is not equivalent to a carcass dispute, so the same display can serve different protective purposes in different places.

Why the Etosha result cannot be treated as a universal lion victory

Trinkel and Kastberger’s Etosha study found that the observed hyena clans had difficulty taking lion kills or deterring lions from hyena kills. In that study, 71% of recorded hyena mortality was attributed to lions. Both results are local findings, not species-wide constants.

The authors linked the Etosha pattern to several ecological features: a local ratio of hyenas to lions that limited recruitment, relatively small clans and large territories. When hyenas are spread across a broad area, enough clan members may not be close enough to assemble at a kill. A site with different prey densities, clan sizes, territory arrangements or lion demographics could produce a different balance.

The presence of adult male lions is especially important because it changes the cost of a challenge. A hyena group that can pressure a female lion or a small number of lions may behave very differently when a large male is guarding the carcass. Local conditions must be stated alongside any claim about which species “dominates.”

How habitat and prey change the answer

  • Prey abundance: In the Masai Mara study, seasonal prey availability influenced what hyenas attempted to hunt. Abundant prey can make selective, solitary attempts practical; difficult or heavily defended prey can favor additional hunters.
  • Group size: More hyenas increase the potential for collective pressure, but only if enough individuals can reach the site in time.
  • Territory size: Large territories can spread clan members thinly and reduce recruitment during a fast-moving carcass dispute.
  • Lion demographics: Adult male lions alter the risk calculation and were associated with less hyena mobbing in the Kenyan encounter dataset.
  • Possession: The predator already holding the food at the beginning of an encounter has an advantage in retaining it.
  • Social relationships: Kinship, bond strength and recent greetings help predict which hyenas participate in a collective challenge.

These variables explain why footage from one reserve can appear to contradict footage from another without either scene being misleading. The animals are responding to different ecological and social payoffs.

Common myths corrected

“Hyenas are only scavengers.”

False. Spotted hyenas actively hunt and also scavenge. The Etosha researchers state this directly, and the Kenyan hunting study recorded hundreds of hunting attempts, many by lone animals.

“Hyenas always hunt in packs.”

False. More than 75% of the 272 attempts recorded in the seven-year Kenyan study were made by lone hyenas. Group hunting was observed, especially for zebra in that population, but clan membership did not require a group hunt.

“A large hyena group will always beat lions.”

False. Mobbing is conditional and dangerous. More hyenas made mobbing more likely in the Kenyan dataset, while adult male lions made it less likely. Etosha observations showed hyenas struggling to take lion kills or deter lions from their own kills under that site’s conditions.

“The winner is determined only by body size.”

False. Possession, numbers, adult male presence, social recruitment and geography all affect the result. A smaller group that already controls a carcass may retain it, while a larger group may fail to challenge if members are scattered or the risk is too high.

“One dramatic video represents the species.”

False. A single encounter shows one combination of prey, location, group composition and timing. Long-term observations are needed to distinguish a common pattern from an exceptional event.

How to interpret a documentary scene

  1. Identify the species and context. Confirm that the hyenas are spotted hyenas and note whether the scene involves a live hunt, a carcass or a den.
  2. Ask who has possession. Which animal is already feeding or standing over the food? Starting possession can predict retention.
  3. Count active participants, not distant animals. A clan may be nearby, but only some members can reach the contest quickly enough to matter.
  4. Look for adult male lions. Their presence changes the danger and is associated with less hyena mobbing.
  5. Separate pursuit from capture. A chase is a hunting attempt; it is not evidence that prey was caught.
  6. Check the prey species and season. The Kenyan study found that hyenas shifted toward abundant prey and that zebra were especially associated with group pursuit.
  7. Avoid the “hunter versus scavenger” label. The same hyena population can hunt on one occasion and scavenge on another.
  8. Ask whether the behavior is defensive. Mobbing near a communal den may relate to cub safety rather than access to a carcass.

What the evidence can and cannot establish

The strongest quantitative evidence here concerns spotted-hyena hunting and lion-hyena encounters. It establishes that solitary hunting can dominate within a clan, that prey and age influence success, and that social and ecological conditions shape confrontations.

It does not provide a balanced numerical comparison of lion and hyena hunting success, a universal percentage of cooperative lion hunts, or a single ranking of predator strength. Nor does the Etosha mortality figure describe every spotted-hyena population. Keeping those limits visible produces a more accurate comparison than assigning one species permanent control of every kill.

The clearest conclusion is conditional: lions and spotted hyenas are both capable predators and scavengers; lions organize around prides, while hyenas combine clan membership with flexible individual behavior. Hyenas may hunt alone, cooperate when prey or danger makes cooperation worthwhile, and challenge lions when numbers and relationships make the risk acceptable. At a particular carcass, possession, local population structure and the presence of adult male lions can matter more than a simple label such as “top predator.”
