James has spoken about the family connection for years, but a 31 October 2025 interview with The Independent captured how strongly it still affects her. While rewatching Ridley Scott’s 1979 science-fiction horror film, James heard Horton’s voice and said she stopped in her tracks: “My God, this is crazy, that’s my grandma!”
Helen Horton was the voice of Mother
Horton did not play a visible crew member, the creature, or an alien. She provided the voice of Mother, the onboard computer of the commercial towing ship Nostromo.
#1 Best Overall
Mother is heard through announcements and system responses as the Nostromo crew investigates an apparent distress signal. Her voice is part of the film’s infrastructure: calm, impersonal and disembodied, emerging from the ship’s technology rather than from a character on screen. The American Film Institute lists Horton as the “Voice of ‘Mother,’” while the film’s credited-cast record identifies her as “Mother, voice.”
That distinction matters. Horton was not “the voice of the alien” or “the voice of the Nostromo crew.” She voiced the computer that manages and communicates with the ship.
For fans who want to revisit the performance, the official 20th Century Studios catalogue documents a Alien 4K UHD Blu-ray, including the 40th-anniversary 4K Ultra HD plus 2D Blu-ray edition. It is an optional way to return to the original film and listen for the details in Mother’s announcements; it should not be read as an edition endorsed or used by James.
James heard the connection while thinking about Sigourney Weaver
In The Independent interview, James said she had recently been watching Alien while thinking about Sigourney Weaver, whose performance as Ellen Ripley became one of the film’s defining elements. James described Weaver as an inspiration for a possible role.

Then Horton’s voice came through the film. James recalled the shock of recognizing it and described her grandmother’s voice as “magic,” with a rich, almost-British quality. The reaction was not a discovery that the relationship had only just become known; James had already discussed it publicly in a 2 May 2021 interview with The Guardian. The later interview offered a more vivid account of why the connection remains so startling when she hears it.
Acting was part of James’s family history
James has described acting as being “in [her] blood.” Her father acted for a period, and Horton acted throughout her life. Horton died shortly before James began drama school, James told The Guardian, leaving her wishing she could have spoken with her grandmother about the acting business.
The family connection therefore carries more weight than a surprising film-trivia fact. Horton’s work belongs to one of the most influential science-fiction films ever made, while James built her own career as an actor in a later generation. Hearing the voice can bring both parts of that history together in a single moment.

A small credit in a landmark film
Alien follows the crew of the Nostromo after they respond to what appears to be a distress signal and encounter a hostile extraterrestrial organism. The British Film Institute identifies the film as a 1979 US/UK production directed by Ridley Scott, with a 117-minute running time.
The film’s lasting power comes from the combination of its industrial setting, unsettling sound design, creature effects, production design and carefully controlled suspense. Mother is one element of that larger construction. Horton’s performance is heard rather than seen, but that is precisely why it can remain lodged in a viewer’s memory: the voice seems to belong to the ship itself.
AFI’s catalogue also records that the production was built around design, sets and special effects rather than a cast dominated by established major stars. Horton’s brief voice credit fits the film’s broader approach. A performer who never appears on screen helped give the Nostromo its identity.

James once used the connection to impress Edgar Wright
James also told The Independent that she once used the family story during the audition process for Edgar Wright’s Baby Driver. She called it the only time she had really “played that card,” using the connection to Horton as a memorable piece of family history.
It is a lighter anecdote than her reaction to hearing Mother’s voice, but it shows why the story is such an unusual part of James’s professional biography. Her grandmother’s contribution to Alien is small in screen time and central in atmosphere—and it gives James a direct family link to a film that continues to shape science-fiction and horror.
