Lightyear (2022) is the in-universe science-fiction movie that inspired the Buzz Lightyear toy in Toy Story. Chris Evans voices this film’s Buzz, a Space Ranger trying to get home with help from recruits Izzy, Mo, and Darby, his robot companion Sox, and the memory of his commander, Alisha Hawthorne. James Brolin voices their imposing foe, Emperor Zurg.
Who voices the main Lightyear characters?
The central cast combines Buzz’s original crew, the recruits who help him later, and the companion who stays at his side. Disney+ lists the character and voice-actor assignments; D23 describes the principal relationships.
| Character | Voice actor | Role in the story |
|---|---|---|
| Buzz Lightyear | Chris Evans | The Space Ranger at the center of the mission to get home. |
| Alisha Hawthorne | Uzo Aduba | Buzz’s commander and best friend. |
| Izzy Hawthorne | Keke Palmer | Alisha’s granddaughter and a recruit who joins Buzz’s mission. |
| Mo Morrison | Taika Waititi | A recruit who joins Buzz and the others. |
| Darby Steel | Dale Soules | A recruit who joins Buzz and the others. |
| Sox | Peter Sohn | Buzz’s robot companion cat. |
| Emperor Zurg | James Brolin | The foe whose robot army threatens the mission. |
Who voices the supporting Lightyear characters?
The film also names members of the crew and its command structure. Disney+ lists these supporting roles alongside the principal cast.
| Character | Voice actor | Role |
|---|---|---|
| I.V.A.N. | Mary McDonald-Lewis | The onboard computer. |
| Commander Burnside | Isiah Whitlock Jr. | A supporting commander. |
| Airman Diaz | Efren Ramirez | A supporting crew member. |
| Young Izzy | Keira Hairston | Izzy as a child. |
Is Lightyear the movie Andy watched in Toy Story?
Yes. Disney News describes Lightyear as the film Andy watched and fell in love with as a child. The distinction matters: Chris Evans voices the human Space Ranger in this fictional movie, not the Buzz toy from the main Toy Story films. The toy’s adventures and the Space Ranger’s origin story are related through the franchise, but they are not the same character portrayal.
