Letters from the Silenced Country (original title: Listy) is a documentary by Belarusian director Andrei Kutsila about people confronting imprisonment, repression, exile and resistance in contemporary Belarus. Venice selected it for its 2026 Open Out of Competition program, and DOK Leipzig lists it in its 2026 International Competition Documentary Film program. A secondary trailer index labels a trailer official, but the available record does not establish that it was the film’s first trailer.
What the trailer and film are about
The film builds its portrait of Belarus through individual lives rather than an abstract overview. Venice’s synopsis follows a father trying to evade surveillance and possible arrest, a former criminal investigator who flees to Poland, a young student sentenced after protesting, and Vitold, a 50-year-old whose prison story is shaped by photographs sent from home. The accounts connect personal risk and loss to solidarity and the human cost of resistance. Venice’s film page describes these stories; the URL in the listing is not reproduced here because its exact address is not established in the available record.
IDFA’s catalog describes a mix of protest footage, political prisoners’ letters read to loved ones, surveillance-camera recordings, and animation based on drawings made in prison. A line included in that description—“Belarus is getting very quiet, it is drowning under the ice”—is dialogue from the film; the excerpt does not identify its speaker. IDFA’s catalog provides this account.
Kasia’s drawings are both evidence of expression under confinement and a visual thread transformed through animation. The film’s form brings together observational filmmaking, archival and found material, testimony, correspondence, surveillance footage, and animation. Venice and IDFA describe these elements.

Why “first trailer” needs a qualification
The supplied headline calls it the “first trailer,” but the located secondary trailer index only labels a trailer as official. It does not establish the original publisher or confirm when the trailer first appeared. The chronology claim should therefore be treated as headline framing, not as a verified release fact.

The sources do not explain whether the differences reflect separate cuts, updates, or stale catalog data. For a particular screening, the relevant festival listing is the clearest guide.

The director’s perspective
In his director statement on the Venice page, Kutsila writes: “I was forced to leave Belarus five years ago, after the protests against the falsification of the presidential elections were violently suppressed.” The first-person account provides context for his perspective as a Belarusian filmmaker living in exile.
DOK Leipzig’s program description says that more than 65,000 people have been criminalised and detained since Alexander Lukashenko’s controversial re-election in 2020. That figure is the festival’s framing; it is not independently verified here. The film itself focuses on the lived experiences behind the broader subject.
