The festivals’ visibility is an opportunity; a confirmed agreement or disclosed financial result would be evidence that it became a commercial outcome.
What happened at TIFF and VIFF
Network Media Group announced gala premieres for the documentary at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) and Vancouver International Film Festival (VIFF). In its October 9, 2026 release, the company said the film premiered at TIFF on September 11 and received an honourable mention for Best Canadian Feature Film. A separate hometown screening took place at the Vancouver Playhouse on October 3; the Rick Hansen Foundation lists a VIFF screening on October 6. These are distinct festival and public screening events, not evidence of a distribution agreement. Network Media Group’s release and the Foundation’s anniversary page provide the event details.
Adrian Buitenhuis directed the film. Derik Murray and Ryan Reynolds produced it in association with Reynolds’ Maximum Effort. The company says the documentary uses archival footage, original interviews and Rick Hansen’s personal audio recordings. The company announcement describes the production and its festival reception.
What the premieres could mean for Network Media Group
Network Media Group is the parent company of Network Entertainment, the production business behind the film. Network describes its work as producing documentary and other premium entertainment content, monetized across digital and analog platforms. Its About page and company site outline that business.

Network Entertainment CEO Derik Murray said the festivals were “the ideal venues to showcase the film and motivate potential global distribution opportunities.” That statement describes the company’s intended business-development path: use festival exposure to present the documentary to possible distributors. It does not say that a distributor has acquired the film.
The sources do not identify a buyer, confirm a signed deal, specify territories or platforms, disclose terms, or report film-specific revenue. They also do not establish an effect on Network Media Group’s share price or financial performance. The company release notes that forward-looking statements involve risks and uncertainties. Any claim that these premieres have already secured global distribution, a streaming release or new earnings would go beyond what has been announced.

The story behind the film
