Rebellion revisits the Bradford 12 case to examine community self-defence, anti-racist organising and the continuing threat of far-right violence. Its directors present the story as relevant now, but the wording “Your Problems Are Created by Elon Musk, Not Migrants” has not been independently verified as a quotation from them.
Why the film is being presented as timely
The filmmakers describe Rebellion as a reminder of how communities organise against political violence, fascism and the far right. The BFI’s festival introduction likewise frames the Bradford 12’s struggle as a possible blueprint for confronting political violence today. That is the film’s stated connection to the present: it asks viewers to consider how people respond collectively when they believe their community is under threat.
A BFI event connected to the film also frames discussion around the campaign’s causes, leadership, media coverage and impact, alongside comparisons with more recent justice movements. These are invitations to reflect and debate, rather than evidence that the historical case and any current movement are identical.
What was the Bradford 12 case?
According to the film’s official account, twelve young Asian men were charged with terrorism in 1981 after preparing petrol bombs to defend Bradford against an anticipated racist skinhead attack. The site says they were acquitted after a lengthy trial and national and international protests. The campaign’s slogan, quoted on the film’s About page, was “Self-defence is no offence.”

Archive, testimony and a staged trial
The film combines archive material and interviews with a staged reconstruction of the trial. According to the filmmakers, Bradford 12 members, their children, community activists and workers took part in recreating key moments. Leeds Film also describes the work as combining archive footage, first-hand testimony and a collectively staged reconstruction.
A collective approach
The filmmakers describe the production as a collective effort involving documentary makers, activists, people central to the Bradford 12 and their supporters. They call it a “Third Cinema event” and say they chose a reconstruction rooted in intergenerational lived experience rather than conventional drama. Tariq Mehmood told Leeds Film: “For me, this film is personal. It has taken me 40 years to tell it, and it is a story of the wounds of my own life, in the scars of my generation, and in the courage of those who stood with us.”

What is known about the Elon Musk wording?
The phrase “Your Problems Are Created by Elon Musk, Not Migrants” cannot be treated as a verified direct quotation from the directors on the available evidence. The film’s official description and BFI materials support its anti-fascist and community-organising context, but they do not establish who said those exact words or where. The phrase should therefore not be presented as a confirmed director quote.
