Leslie Charleson, who played Monica Quartermaine on ABC’s General Hospital for decades, died at 79. Executive producer Frank Valentini announced her death on January 12, 2025. Charleson’s connection to the soap ran from 1977 to 2023, and the Los Angeles Times reported that she appeared in more than 2,000 episodes.
Her death and what was later reported about its cause
Valentini announced Charleson’s death on January 12, 2025; ABC News reported the announcement the following day. The Los Angeles Times said she died Sunday after a long illness and noted on January 13 that the cause was not then available.
On February 14, E! News reported that records from the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner it had reviewed identified the cause as sequelae of blunt head trauma and the manner of death as an accident. That cause-and-manner information came from E! News’ later report, not from Valentini’s initial announcement.
Monica Quartermaine and a decades-long place on General Hospital
Charleson’s defining role was Monica Quartermaine, a central presence in the Quartermaine family’s story. She played Monica from 1977 through 2023, according to ABC News. The Los Angeles Times put her appearance total at more than 2,000 episodes; that is a reported figure, not an episode-by-episode count independently verified here.

In the announcement shared on the show’s official Instagram account, executive producer Frank Valentini described her impact: “Her enduring legacy has spanned nearly 50 years on General Hospital alone and, just as Monica was the heart of the Quartermaines, Leslie was a beloved matriarch of the entire cast and crew.” ABC News quoted Valentini’s statement.
