Some tracks sold as Frank Ocean leaks in 2023 were reported to be AI-generated fakes. The account came from the seller, who told Motherboard that a musician had been hired to make the songs using a generative model trained on high-quality vocal snippets. That is a reported admission—not an independent forensic finding about every track that circulated.
What happened with the Frank Ocean leaks?
In April 2023, a seller using the name mourningassasin marketed purported unreleased Frank Ocean songs to fans. The FADER reported on May 11, 2023, drawing on Motherboard reporter Joseph Cox’s interview with the seller, that roughly nine alleged tracks circulated, mainly on Discord. The estimate and the account of how the tracks were made come from the seller’s claims, not a verified inventory or examination of the audio. The FADER’s report describes the scheme and its attribution.
According to that account, the seller hired a musician to create fake tracks with a generative model trained on high-quality voice snippets. The pitch depended on the appeal of exclusive, unreleased music. The fact that fans encountered or bought a track in a fan community does not establish that it was authentic.
How much money did the seller say they made?
The seller claimed proceeds of about C$13,000—roughly US$9,600, as reported by The FADER in 2023. This is an attributed claim, not an audited total. IFPI’s 2024 presentation later summarized approximately $10,000 from two deepfake items, but the extracted slide text reads “$10,00,” so it does not support quoting a precise amount. IFPI’s 2024 presentation provides broader industry context, not an independent audit of this seller’s earnings.

What did Frank Ocean say about the later album rumor?
In September 2025, Ocean’s Instagram account addressed a separate rumor about a project called Look At Us, We’re In Love. As reported by The FADER, he said the phrase had been an early title for his New York club nights, not an album title: “Look At Us, We’re In Love was an early attempt at a title for my club nights in NYC before I decided on one.” He also wrote of songs in a circulating post: “Several of these are either ai generated or holes in my memory. I’m gonna have to go with the former.” The FADER’s account of Ocean’s comments concerns that later rumor and set of uploaded material.
Ocean’s 2025 comments should not be treated as a track-by-track authentication of the songs sold in 2023—or of every file shared online. The statement addressed the material in the post described by The FADER; it does not establish the origin of each individual file.

Can listeners tell whether a Frank Ocean leak is AI-generated?
The available reporting does not establish a reliable audio test or detector that can authenticate a purported leak. The 2023 report said the seller claimed at least one track was real and noted how difficult verification is without confirmation from Ocean. A convincing voice imitation, a seller’s story, or circulation among fans is not proof of provenance.
For a practical credibility check, focus on where the file came from and whether an authorized source has confirmed it. These checks can help assess a claim; they are not forensic tests.

- Provenance: A direct artist or authorized-channel release is stronger evidence than a file offered by an anonymous seller.
- Confirmation: Look for confirmation from Ocean or an authorized representative, rather than relying on a seller’s assertion of exclusive access.
- Independent support: If the claim rests only on a purported leaker’s account, treat it as unverified.
What does “vocal cloning” mean?
IFPI defines vocal cloning as “A digital replica of a person’s voice outputted by a vocal model.” That definition describes the technique in general; it does not prove that a particular recording was cloned or identify which model was used. The reported 2023 method—generative modeling based on high-quality vocal snippets—comes from the seller’s account as relayed in the reporting.
